Just got my first Western Hognose and man was I led astray by the pet store on the heating. Thankfully he stayed away from the way to hot heat mat last night. I caught your video this morning and checked the floor temp it was at 154 degrees!!! I unplugged the mat and waited for everything to cool down with him safely on the cool side. Then I got the heat lamp going without the mat and made sure the temp was 95degrees. I just ordered a thermostat to use on my heat mat. Thanks a bunch for the great video, it really saved my snake!
I love it Joe! I would vary the substrate depending on your location, but a sandy semi packable substrate is what i find them in when i go herping. I only have a few at the moment. But i like the coco blocks you can find at petco. It helps with moisture in my dry environment.
What about UVB light? Or do you only use heat? Also, I’ve had my baby I got from the pet store for a little over four months and he has not shed yet… I’ve read they don’t shed very often but I’m starting to get really worried. Only problem right now is that I can’t really help him out much I feel like because he has mites :( so he’s on paper towels and only a water dish right now. Any advice you might have would be great 😁
Right now I’m trying to convince my parents to let me get a hognose and i was just wondering how much more expensive do like the lavenders or supercondas get
Yes, great for babies in general. Male can use this type of setup for life, as they don't get nearly are large as females. Females I change out to a 30 gallon once they hit around 120g

You’re welcome. Glad it helped.

Thanks Matthew, and great points!!
I’ve heard from other people you can use a heat pad without a built in thermostat but you will have to buy a separate one for it
True.
Thanks❤very helpful
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
What do you personally use? Do you use the basking lamp during the day and heating mat at night for your hoggies?
Correct.. the babies I have kept this season and my adults... but.. I have all my babies in the rack system, which is heat tape.
Great video
Thanks!

Do you turn the heat off at night or do you leave it on all the time?
@@jessicacoley1812 heat lamp daytime and heat pad at night

Do you have to have a thermostat for a heat bulb
@@brookelonghurst4313 no. I use an adjustable heat lamp hanger, so I can adjust the heat bulb to get the desired temperature.
What size is that terrarium? Is that a ten gallon?
@@Vercettislugger correct 👍🏼
Hey can you make a video based on a out side tank i just got a baby and im trying to set it up
Not sure what you mean by an out side tank? Please explain? thank you.
@HogginOut I tank that's outside like a tank in a screened area our side of the house like no ac or lights
@HogginOut I live in Florida so it never gets cold always above 80
I read somewhere that hognoses like to do a little climbing sometimes. Is that true. Would it be good to have a ledge or something?
What size terrarium do you recommend for a baby hognose? Im looking to get one and dont want to get something to big and stress it out. Thank you!
10 gallon is fine for a baby.
Hi, enjoy all the content. Did you say you had a hognose chat group? Can you join from across the pond? Thanks Jamie
Thanks for the kind words, Jamie.. yes.. we have a community discord server.. invite link in description.. enjoy and thanks for the question
I’m a ball python keeper and have lots of Reptichip. Will that be ok for a Hognose?
Yes, that works. Aspen bedding is great for hognoses to create and keep burrows/tunnels. That’s the main reason I use it.
I use a finer substrate. I like coco blocks that expand with water. I use a flat basking rock to feed on.
Great video. Is this setup suitable for a smaller baby? And also how long are they ok in this size until they’ll need an upgrade in terrarium size ?
Yes, great for babies in general. Male can use this type of setup for life, as they don't get nearly are large as females. Females I change out to a 30 gallon once they hit around 120g
Could you just have them at room temp at night, room is about 72
Of course.
I read to use newspaper for the babies to see if theyre healthy, should i not?
No, ink not good. Use paper towels to check for healthy stool.
Your girl in this video is beautiful!
