    This video has come at a perfect time - my hognose has
    decided not to eat recently even though hes been fine all his life!
    I think its his environment - we realised our thermostat broke not too long ago and had it replaced but since then hes not eaten even though the temp is back to normal. I dont handle too much - hes got a humidity box and a hide. hmmm!

    • @AloneInTheGarden
      @AloneInTheGarden 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Aimiee Thermostats can sometimes vary slightly. It’s possible that even though the new one says the temp is the same as it was before, it may be slightly off. You could try adjusting it a bit and then giving your noodle a few days to adjust.

    • @SerafinaP
      @SerafinaP 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It's the time of year probably, you can cool him down and not feed if you want or just wait it out. In around 6 weeks he will probably shed, offer a day or two after the shed actually comes off and he will be a hungry hungry hippo. Nothing makes them get back on track like a shed. Plus with the time of year, even if it is hot inside his enclosure he might feel the barometric pressure drop and know it's colder outside. There is an article on reptilinks about how all hogs go off food this time of year and all new owners freak out that goes into more detail.

    • @Carriesue1982
      @Carriesue1982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Aimiee it’s also very common for them to stop eating this time of year, I wouldn’t worry too much.

    • @prcervi
      @prcervi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      might be the season, might also be worth a temp gun check to be very certain that the new thermostat is accurate

    That's a beautiful fat baby you're holding. :)
    Getting our first hognose has been an experience this year. He's a nearly three-year-old male we got from a breeding facility that no longer wanted to breed his line.The dummy ended up eating and spitting up his bedding chips (do NOT use Sani-Chips for these guys, they are too small and our derpagus ingested a lot), but thankfully he passed them and wasn't impacted. We put him on much bigger aspen chips to fix that(fibers are good too).
    5:35 - Heat is VERY important. We keep our hoggy's tank very warm (around 85-87 degrees, never more than 90 on the substrate surface). Once we got the heat up, 2 months after the substrate incident, he ate. His tank is also in one of the least-used rooms in our house, so it's quiet and comfy.
    Some hoggies are very fussy. Ours won't eat if you take him out of the tank. He has to be up and moving around of his own volition, and we need to boop his nose with the pinkie before he takes it (like 8:44). Pay careful attention to your hoggy's behavior, limit touch around feeding time, and keep them warm. (Also, talk to your hoggy when they're around to get them used to the friendly noise, and try not to hover over them. The shadow you cast makes them think you're a hawk and it frightens them.)
    Reptilinks has toad sausages and toad-scenting liquid sprays, if you're looking for those. Those links didn't work for me but others have had a lot of success.

    I live in New England. 1 albino male western hognose, 2 years old in a 20 Long reptile enclosure. When the colder weather starts to hit, we increase his "cold" side to 82° and the hot spot to 92°. The unheated spaces stay room temp, about 70°.
    He absolutely refuses to eat in a separate enclosure anymore (suddenly went off feed three months ago and we just got him eating regularly again). We tried everything but the winning combo was turning up the cold side even more, to about 83°, and wiggling slightly (but not too much!) in his upside down hot spot hide.

    Emmily important question: when you say that hognoses can be fed with eggs, chiken hearts, or fishes, you mean they can be fed with them all the time, or from time to time, and still be offered rodens?

      Time to time. None of these are good staple foods for hognoses.

    First Hognose I ever had was one of the best snakes I ever kept. Ate whenever I offered food and never was picky. He was a favorite in my Education Programs, because he would still play dead almost on command, and then pop back up and resume normal activity. A few years later, I got another one that was so pretty, and he never adjusted to people. They sure can be extremes! Neat video. Thanks

    Of course this is uploaded after my baby hognose started eating! Lol. I’m new to the hobby and have had my little boy since September. He was a great eater when he was still with his breeder but when I received him he had no interest in food. I guess he’s finally at home with me because he ate his first f/t pinkie last week. ☺️🐍💕

    Funny. I just got a baby to start eating after 3 MONTHS! Scary! Lol he ate twice for me at first, then 3 months later. I ended up uping his hot spot to 94. He’s much happier now. I tried EVERYTHING! From scenting with tuna( worked once) catching roads and using them for scenting (never worked) adjusting temps and almost changing enclosure( he’s in a small tub with aspen) but he’s ok now(ate 4 times since without scenting). Glad you guys made this video though! Very informative especially because when I was having trouble I couldn’t find much info online.

    Great tip for cheap hides- use damp sand to make a mold then fill it with concrete or cement, smooth down the edges and you're done. It's cheap and easy to customize. I spent 5 dollars on a huge bag of concrete and 10 on a big bag of sand, had enough for six or so attempts at making the caves, resulted in having three successful caves, because I was experimenting a lot.

    Had trouble with mine and i had to give it to a friend for while as i was out of the country gave them instructions i think they misunderstood but it worked out.
    Get one of those tuperware boxes thaw the mouse with warm water in the container once thawed and drain the container then put snake in. he always eats now its great. Makes sure to leave them be with the lid on and a towel over!
    I think he likes it because hes in a warm environment and the mouse is a bit wet.

Edit: pls Like this so she will see it ❤❤❤

  • @Kimmaline
    @Kimmaline 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Emily, I'm curious, if it is so difficult to get them off of live once you've started there, why do you go to live pinkies before you try scenting f/t pinkies? It just seems easier to deal with scenting than live.
    Also, have you or anyone else you know tried the frog reptilinks for picky hognose babies? I cant imagine how expensive it would be for a whole collection, but when you've tried everything else, maybe it's better than the alternative???? I just learned about them a week ago, they seem pretty cool. I don't work for them or anything, but when I heard they had a frog version my very first thought was picky hognose behbehs!

    I've had success with Tuna juice scenting when I first got my Hognose On his more picky days, I've covered his tank with a towel for thirty or so minutes while he's eaten. And yes, he religiously skips meals, gets pickier, and grumpier around his shed. (Although I'd be grumpy too if I was itchy and couldn't see as well)...

    I just got a baby male 3 weeks ago this Tuesday. He has refused to eat, or straight up to failed to eat. I realized my tank was too cool and he's probably bromating. So I will keep an eye on him. Adorable, silly little thing, I just want him to thrive. He saw his reflection and scooted back into his lair immediately the other day.

    I love hognoses! I do own a few snakes, and even though I really do want a hognose I'm extremely allergic to bee stings, and hognose venom has almost the same structure as the venom from bees. I wouldn't want to use my epi-pen just because my snake decided to chew on me haha!

    Sydney refused to eat for more than a month. He weighed 10g, but went down to 9g. We went to our vet who force fed him. It was ugly because he really didn’t want to eat. I used all the tips and tricks you mentioned (except chicken hearts, didn’t know that one!), and no eating until the vet.
    The vet suggested using live pinkies after everyone else in the room went to bed and the lights were out. It worked! I used 2 live, then changed to frozen/thawed. He ate it right down, and we never looked back! That was in early September. He so good on eating, he just ate in blue! Thanks for this video on behalf of all of us anxious snake mom’s out here!

    Please understand that I am a person asking who has never owned a snake in my life. However, I know you keep snakes in enclosures. Yet, is it alright to put them in a safe enclosure outside for them to bask in the sun?

    • @azazelgrey2022
      @azazelgrey2022 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't control the temperature of the sun's warmth, so it's best to limit outside time for most snakes 😊 You can use UVB/UVA bulbs to simulate sunlight and provide basking warmth through heat lamps, though

      There are outdoor enclosures that you can get. Instead of glass those are made (wholly or partially) out of a fine metal mesh, so they are very airy and allow for your animals to get natural sunlight.

    • @adriannavanoyen
      @adriannavanoyen ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is an old comment, but figured I’d reply for posterity. Because chicken hearts are a single organ, they wouldn’t make a good long term feeder as they’re lacking the nutrients in a whole prey item (think water, fat, etc).
