There are a lot of different types of memory cards to choose from, and this video helps you in choosing the right SD card for video. The video tells the differences among SD, Micro SD, Compact Flash, and CFast cards, but the main focus is on understanding what all the symbols and numbers on SD cards mean. The difference between bit vs byte or Megabit vs Megabyte (Mb vs MB) is that there are 8 bits in one byte. Also covered is the difference in the various speed class ratings such as UHS1 vs Class 10, UHS1 vs UHS3, and UHS - I vs UHS - II bus speeds as well as the new V class ratings for cards. So obviously 300 MB/s will allow for more continuous shooting and faster reading, for instance like a professional photographer at a sporting event who is trying to capture every moment, but for someone taking basic shots like this (instagram.com/liveitupcaptures/) a 95MB/s SD card will suffice right? And how about shooting in 60 FPS?

2:16 The maximum achievable read speed is the speed at which the card can transfer already written files to another destination. The read speed will not be the factor involved in taking pictures in burst mode, this is still the write speed. The camera takes the shots and puts them into it's buffer and writes simultaneously to the card. The faster the write speed on the card the more pictures you will be able to take before the buffer is full and has to stop taking new shots. The read speed only comes into play by determining how fast you can copy (or cut) the files from the card to another destination.

Great video. I actually learned something and used math to figure it out! It's crazy how the store people always think you need the SdXc ii for 4k but I see that you don't. You are only paying for the read speed in most cases bc the 4k on sony a7iii only writes at 100mb/s (little b) sec

I’m just starting up a podcast as well as considering creating content for TH-cam and other media outlets, and consequently I need to understand the tiny little details about cameras so that I can create the things that I want to create. Great vid and very informative. My questions got answered very easily. The only thing I was confused about was the Class number and the U number (3:24) as you stated that both of those represented the minimum sustained write speed. This was a little confusing due to me thinking why would there be two separate indicators with different icons to represent the same thing? If you could help me in understanding which is the actual min sustained write speed and then disclose what the other actually is. Thanks in advance!
SirShotem Visuals, I honestly don’t know why they put both on there. C10 and U1 are going to be the same. But if there is a C10 and U3 then the U3 will be the min sustained. Maybe it’s there to say that it still meets the C10 standard as well.

Thank you Young Man, Your Video more or less confirmed what I was 95% sure of But I wanted to double check As the SP 64Gb Micro Sd cards for Home security POE type cams as onboard back Micro sd cards...the max out card hold is 64GB, I was trying to determine if a 128GB Micro Sd card would work BC some of these Cams are going to be put up 50 feet or so High Areas to keep and extra set of Eyes on Cattle when up by the Barn during night.
Anyway I guess the 64GB will work just fine for the Reolink 5MP Poe cams so Thank You Again Young Man ! Cow}:-o)

I was looking on the GoPro website and the 64 GB micro SD card was $50 and what you linked on amazon for the 128 GB SD card was only a little over $30... Hey Kennidy. I do trust Amazon for it. I just checked B&H as well and they have the 128GB for $25 now. Other manufacturers will usually mark up the price for the same products when they are selling them with their own products. I guess they figure that people are already spending a lot on a camera so they probably won't look for a cheaper price because of the convenience of buying them together.

Which memory card would you say I should get for my canon g7x Mark II for vlogging?

Camber Motion I should have waited lol I already bought the extreme sandisk 32gb from seeing someone else with a canon using it. Would that still be okay? I definitely will get what you mentioned another time!
Gina A., that’s basically the same thing with a smaller memory capacity (just can’t record as long). But for vlogging, a 32GB should be fine as long as you aren’t recording all day nonstop. I just like 64 or 128 GB because I usually leave my footage on the cards as another backup until I finish editing.
Camber Motion right that's why I was debating on the 64gb as well because of those reasons you mentioned. But I do already have a regular 32gb that comes with the canon g7x. This was just going to be a back up. I usually don't record all day long lol And edit as soon as I can to take it off of the camera, may still get the 64gb if I feel even the extreme 32gb isn't enough! I watched this video 4 times, but i still dont understand what memory card i should buy for youtube videoes on the Canon80d? Great explanation of what they do, but not so much on what to choose.
There are so many different cameras out there that it's impractical for me to list out what card to choose for every camera. There isn't a certain card you need to get for shooting TH-cam videos. Regardless of what you are shooting videos for, you just need to know what your camera's highest recording bit rate is to determine what card you need. The video explained that if you look up your camera's highest recording bit rate, then you'll know which card you'll need to get after converting from Megabits or Mb/s (how camera's list the writing speed) to Megabytes or MB/s (how memory cards list the writing speed). I just looked up the Canon 80D specs on the B&H website and the highest recording bit rate is 90 Mb/s 1080p using MOV. Since there are 8 bits in a byte, then 90 Mb/s = 11.25 MB/s. So you'll need a U3 SDXC card (slowest sustained recording speed is 30 MB/s) because a U1 card (slowest sustained recording speed of 10 MB/s) won't be able to keep up. I would get this SanDisk card ( amzn.to/2KLmu3B ).

At 2:35 when you said about sustain speed of a video and that eventually dropped the framerate you did actually emphasize it by adding a frame kinda buffering or lagging effect, that's nice.

I came for info on uhs-1 vs uhs-2 for my Switch. Learned about the 2nd row of pins, and that itd be a waste of money to get a uhs-2 card since the Switch doesn't have that pin-out. Earned a like and a sub 👍
