  • This is a polymer clay sculpting compound, a 50-50 mixture of Super Sculpey and Super Sculpey Firm. I recently completed a alien sculpture using this mixture for the first time and had a pretty good experience with it, so much that I'll be using it again. So I wanted to share this mixing video with you. This is a monster of a job mixing all this clay so I tried to make it more organized and method like. By adding some time lapse into the video I kinda get to show you how much effort it takes to mix this clay (Firm in particular)
    I realize this may not be the most entertaining video I ever made but I just wanted to share my experience with this clay.This will give the people who want to follow along a way to use the same clay I'm using. The way I mix this clay is not the only way, there may even be better ways then this. But I'm guessing any way is fine so long as its mixed thoroughly!!! ...you can't over mix it trust me, the more the better. I'll be letting this clay set up a few days (age) mainly because I don't need it right now. But I guess you could use it right away, although it will softer then usual because of the over conditioning of the clay during the mixing process.
    Thanks for hanging out with my while I prepare some more clay, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and read all this, it means so much.. Thanks for watching and I'll see ya again here soon!! =D
    I'm on Facebook!! / polymerclaysculpting

    hi, really no need for the apology at the end
    for people who sculpt, like me, and watch it, its was quite entertaining :)
    but mostly it was super helpful for understanding the properties of both these materials.
    and also getting a great tip of mixing them.
    thanks :)

    Thank you so much for sharing this I've been having this firm sculpey sit in my drawer for years because I don't know how to use the darn thing. I will definitely try this and it was actually very therapeutic to watch the clay run through the pasta machine. Not boring at all :)

    Have you ever tried putting equal amounts in a mini food processor first? After the bits are chopped form them into little pancakes and then run through machine to get a smooth mix. This method saves the stress on pushing unconditioned pieces through the pasta machine and also saves your hands a bit. This is a great method for mixing in color as well.

    I literally just finally bought a pasta machine Saturday for this very reason (haven't tried it yet). To blend my clays. I have bad wrists and it seriously takes me 2-3 hours to blend 2 oz blocks of clay to make different colors and such (and then my wrists are in a huge amount of pain for days after). And I'm sure this will take somewhere near as long but hopefully it'll help me not damage my wrists so much. Thanks for sharing this video.

    I discovered this technique on my own accidentally - which works really well for simulating fabrics/cloth because they are softer and easy to drape. But I create all my main model framework and major detail with the super sculpy firm still. Is it just me, or is it not that difficult to kneed into a sturdy but malleable consistency? When I first bought it, I was really disheartened at how it just crumbled. But you learn to kneed it, and you learn its strengths - I wouldn't model in regular super sculpy on its own ever again now! The heat from my hands just deforms my creations little by little and they lose detail.

    another way you can mix colours is get a little food chopper ($10 at a cooking store, or Target) Thats what I use to mix my colours. When you use the chopper, it slightly adds a bit of heat from the blade, so it makes it so much easier to mix.
    Your poor hands! My arms and hands would be needing a trip to the spa after that XD cool vid, dude :) Cant wait to see what you make next :)

      Hello, thanks for letting me know whats going on. I think you should stick to the Super Sculpey if you really like it, and being it's a semi-translucent clay you can even mix much smaller amounts of colored clay into it to tint it in interesting ways. For example if you happen to like the grey look of this 50/50 mixture, but not the stiffness, just add less Firm in it next time, or add Super Sculpey to the rest of your current mixture right now to soften it up a little. Adding instead a small amount of Sculpey Clay Softener to the mixture will soften it up much faster than just adding Super sculpey alone, (without also adding to the amount of clay being used, unless it could be used anyways) just something to consider. If painting is a option for you then don't worry about the different kinds of clay's swirling about on your sculpture, they are all compatible with each other and I see other artists sometimes use Super and Firm in one project, without being mixed at all. If non of this helps then remember that we can always pull the clay off and re-mix the lot of it to whatever conditions needed.
      ** I've used this mixture for a few projects now and will soon be doing a review on what I think about it, but I'll just tell you here for now. Basically I find it a bit brittle when compared to just Super Sculpey alone, and ironically, I've never had the chance yet to try just Firm alone.. I think. (I'll be giving that a try too soon) but between the mixture and just Super, I have to prefer Super Sculpey so far, favoring strength and durability. I may also try other mixtures like 75% Super and 25% Firm in the future, but ultimately I'm just exploring different mixture combinations between different types of polymer clay's Let me know if any of this helped?

    Have you tried using clay softener with the firm alone. Or better yet, rolling out the super sculpey with pasta machine and laying it on some computer paper overnight? the paper will absorb any excess oils in the clay, and firms it up some but not too much--especially if you roll out the whole pound then stack papers. That insures the paper won't leach out too much oil.

    I have found that if I add a little bit of vegetable oil to the sculpy firm after the first time I roll it through the pasta machine that it really helps soften it, and gets rid of the dry, crumbly texture. I personally think that the product like that is 'old' and starting to dry out, and the vegetable oil really helps. Have had no problems with baking it after. Something you might consider.

    Hey tom, I know this is an old video but... I haven't tried mixing both these clays together yet, I actually love the Super sculpey firm but it is very brittle/crumbley like you said... when I'm working with any brand of clay it has to be pretty firm since I use a lot of small details in my pieces and the softer clays just don't hold them well at all as I'm sure you know. I'm just wondering if you've ever tried Kato polyclay? I've been doing research on clays to find a firmer one and Kato keeps coming up. I'd love to know your take on it! Thanks so much! love all your videos!!

    I was thinking of adding firm to S3 but now that you've done maybe I wont... I'll stick to my clay softener addition to make firm better. If you add clay softener, firm will act like s3 (if you put too much) so just add a little at a time so it gets non crumbly, smooth, but not sticky.

    Glad it helped.. Just remember the more you mix it the better.. A food processor is not the way to go. Not unless you want something that looks like granite lol. I recommend using a pasta machine as well. (also, I continued to mix this clay for about another full 30 minutes after filming) The MORE you mix it the better the product. Its a lot of work tho =/

    The pink tone (Super Sculpey) says "semi-translucent finish" on the box. This also means you can mix a couple packs of colored clay into a 1lb block of Super Sculpey for for a washed-out pastel look ( I made the colors to the dragon bust demo using super sculpey and colors mixed!!) You have to mix it a LOT! the more the mixing the more the consistant the color is AFTER baking. Super Sculpey gains its transparent effect after its baked so if it mixed poorly is will look like fine marble.

    Well first thing if you use a food processor it has to be dedicated to polymer clay from then on. (can't use it for food any more) I don't doubt it could be used, but this is 2lb of clay and 1lb of that is Firm!! That stuff is rock hard lol. Even if it mixes in the processor it still has to be rolled through the pasta machine because the 2 clay's are different densities and moisture's. Either way you will still be using your elbow quite a lot LOL =D

    I do this exact same thing.. the super sculpey is waaaayyy too soft and it's translucency makes it hard to accurately assess your sculpt.. . but it's nice and durable once baked... adding the firm clay to it is a lot of work, but i think it helps sooo much for sculpt-ability..

      oddly enough, I've never tried JUST the Super Sculpey Firm by itself. But I do have a solid 1lb block of it so I'm sure it wont be long before trying it. I have used just Super Sculpey (pink) by itself, and it seem more durable by itself then this mixture does. I'm still experimenting with different types of clays and mixtures honestly. This elephant I just got done doing used a lot of what I had mixed up, only a little left now. I think I'll try something different or just Firm once it's gone. Not sure if this will help but maybe in the future perhaps, thanks for stopping by!

    I know this is an old video but just in case anyone is going to embark on this torture mixing two clays together. I just want to throw it in there that I just bought a little food mixer, not to blend clay but to get it to a workable consistency. Anyone that's used this stuff knows it starts off hard but as you work it, it softens and becomes easier to shape bigger forms and so on and so on. Well the pasta machine helps out a lot and saves your hands all that mixing but a food mixer does it all for you without any prep except for cutting the clay into smaller chunks that the blender can handle
    It doesn't even matter that the blender gets stuck with too much clay and just whizzes the same block around and around because as its doing that its heating it up and that makes it instantly usable. Bare in mind I use a really crappy little mini mixer that's not powerful at all. If you used a serious large one it would have even more speedy and impressive results mixing and getting clay ready to use.
    Hope this helps someone. I'd love to try out this blend of hard and soft. Happy sculpting!

      You talking about a food processor? I find my firm to work better when I add a little clay softener to it

    • @ClayMann
      @ClayMann 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah a food processor. Clay softener is great but lets say you have a few 1lb boxes of super sculpey, opening them and adding clay softener doesn't help you get started sculpting it. You first have to cut up smaller chunks and work it with your hands to get it to soften enough that you can sculpt with it. Straight out of the box its hard. So the food processor replaces that process of having to get your hands working the clay up to a usable state. It heats it up through the friction of spinning it around.
      It's also a great way of blending different clays together without winding it through a pasta machine over and over.
      I think if you're working with small amounts, it really doesn't matter. Just use your hands but I work on bigger pieces and my hands are hurting pretty badly by the time I've got a few pounds of clay into a workable consistency heh

    • @TheBroodingTom
      @TheBroodingTom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you fold clay and compress it to it's original, unfolded thickness, the rest of the mass spreads outwards having nowhere else to go. When repeated enough times, all the clay is drawn out so thin the particles of each color are mixed on a molecular level, or nearly. A food processor may "mix it up" as you say, but never would it be one unified color, more a like granite stone perhaps (example, chopping up white, black, and gray would look like stone). I agree it can help you get started, but ultimately, further mixing with either your hands, a bottle, or a pasta-machine will be needed. (if mixing 2 colors into a single color that is)
      I think what i'm trying to say is, if the finished color does not matter, than yes. You see the pink clay is semi-translucent, so it allows the grey clay to stay fully gray, in which case poor mixing would not be so easily visible. But if I was mixing white and black with just a blender, I'm just not going to achieve the NEW unified color)
      One more thing to consider, all equipment used for polymer clay is supposed to be dedicated to polymer clay only, never to be used for food products again. Not only is a pasta-machine more commonly used for polymer clay (until now I've never heard of using a food processor) it's also much MUCH cheaper in cost to buy. I paid like $20 give or take a few dollars for my pasta machine, but recently my wife payed out nearly $200 for her food processor.
      Just my thoughts

      @TheBroodingTom  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well just to clarify, I agree with you that 100% perfect blending doesn't happen in a mixer/blender/ The pasta machine and your hands are the way to go there but I have mixed similar tones in the mixer and then as I worked the now really soft warm clay it was easier to blend it together perfectly.
      I bought my tiny food processor just for working with clay and I can tell you that if you wanted to use your normal kitchen one, the cleaning is almost impossible. I try to clean mine now and again to keep it in good working order and its like trying to get superglue off plastic lol
      BUT I swear by it for getting big blobs of clay into working consistency. It's really fast at getting a lot of clay going. I'll list the model here in case anyone is wondering and thinks, nah that's too big a machine to have on my working desk area.
      It's about the size of two mugs of coffee, maybe a smidge bigger. Smaller than a small toaster hehe

      Kenwood CH180 Mini Chopper
      It's really tiny but quite the brute considering its size
      I probably sound like I'm shilling for Kenwood now so I'll add that this is a really old model now. There must be better ones by other manufacturers. Amazon notes for me that I bought this in 2010 and its had some punishment and still going.
      Happy sculpting!

    O.K. maybe not "entertaining" but I think this video might prevent someone from getting discouraged during the early stages of mixing these two clays. Therefore, maybe important. Thanks Tom.

      +pelin uzunkavak You sure can, but I've only used acrylic paints so I can't speak for other kinds of paints personally

      +Polymer Clay Artist thank you for reply :) i use acrylic, so it wont be problem. And, do i have to cook it? I made something, painted and left to dry, will it be ok?

      +pelin uzunkavak If it's polymer clay it will never dry as the clay is oil based, not water. You have to bake it to make the item permanent, otherwise it will stay soft near forever. If you already painted it you can still bake it just watch it closely. Polymer clay and acrylic paints are both plastic based materials so they fuse together during baking, but normally you want to paint after baking though to prevent discoloring. I have re-baked some of my work that was previously hand painted and the paint held up just fine, it just depends on what you got going on. You could always lower the temp a little and increase the time if needed too, otherwise try to still follow the baking instructions while watching the paint if possible

      I've seen a lot of work done using it! Very cool stuff.... but guess what, you won't believe this... I've been invited to Beta test a NEW kind of clay!! It's similar to polymer clay, only this is rubberized! I should have 4lb of the stuff here tomorrow in fact! OMG I still can't believe it! I've been keeping it quiet until it got here but reading your suggestion did me in lol. Also, I really do want to try monster clay as well! If this does arrive tomorrow expect a first, quick look. Hope to see you there!

    PVC perhaps, but NOT this clay (polymer clay) Its against the law to package hazardous materiel without a warning label. This clay is classified as non-toxic. Only the smoke from accidental burning of the clay can be toxic, but you have to go out of your way to burn this clay and its impossible to do if your actually following the instructions. Might as well add its safe to bake in your kitchen oven while I'm at it. Sometimes we eat food the same day just hours after baking clay. Its safe.

    OK GO IN THE KITCHEN AND GET YOUR FOOD GRATER! ( ITS VERY CHEEP TO REPLACE) GRATE THE FRIM CLAY, THEN START ADDING THE OTHER ONE. NEVER PITCH OUT CLAY BECAUSE ITS TOO HARD! IT EASYER MIXING AND ALOT LESS TIME ROLLING THE PASTA MA
    CHINE!
