Honestly, one of my favorite quotes in the entire series. It managed to get an audible laugh out of me. Its up there with "I protested the last one, felt we could do better than to ape the Christians, but I was shouted down." and the conversation between Gertrude an Arthur going like GERTRUDE- You know, thinking about it, the amount of pain and loss and legitimate devastation I’ve caused among your little cult over the last, what, forty years? I think the Desolation is probably very fond of me. ARTHUR- That’s blasphemy, it is. GERTRUDE- Is it? Or maybe you just picked a bad god. That last line really got me.
Maybe it's just me, but I see the cold/ice/winter as an (unexplored) aspect of the Lonely. There's a lot of parallels between freezing and isolation (in fact there's a study, I believe, that says so). I've seen people suggest it for the Desolation, but fire is too... unsubtle. Volatile. Sudden. But the cold? It's a slow, creeping sense. It takes its time, only noticeable until it's too late. And when you realize too late, freezing knee deep in snow as a blizzard whips up, your body's thermal regulation tells you that it's absolutely okay to stay. It's comforting; not too cold anymore as your form heats up as much as it could. The snow, so gentle and soft, feels like a blanket laid by nature. You don't need to leave. You don't want to
True. The cold is also very strongly associated with the Dark, although in that case it seems to be used much more as a symbolic absence of warmth in the same way that darkness is an absence of light.
I'd say the Lonely and the Desolation both get a surprising amount from extreme weather in general. Walking outside under the sweltering sun when no one wants to be out and seeing no one else for a while, even when the weather gets too much for oneself, can produce a similar hypnotizing urge to let yourself melt and never feel the cold of separation again. Trying to lock yourself away from the world and worrying anyone who ventures into such conditions may not return to you feeds the Lonely and the Desolation at once, whether what you're afraid of swallowing your loved one is blaze or frost.
@@hamstrbaxtr I think freak weather in general is an underrated medium for Fears to manifest. I can imagine massive supercell hurricanes being good food for the Vast and Desolation; a nigh inescapable and huge force of destruction from above that just keeps growing until the weather says so.
for me, the lonely fits into an author's role in storytelling quite well. i know we just had the web representing the author but it can get pretty lonely being a puppet master and often authors are encouraged to maintain a distance with their audiences like how johnny sims doesnt consume fanfics to make sure everything he writes isnt influenced by them. alot like what you mentioned in the web video of questioning whether the web itself has free will, to me much of the same applies for a creator who makes worlds and characters but can often feel alone. it also ties into competition and burnout heavily to me, like how the lukas family is structured with the siblings who dont cut it being sent away, and peters competitive streak with elias. all in all, theres a reason why many creators are portrayed as lone wolves and solitary shut ins desperate to make a mark on the world, or maybe that's just coming from me as an artist.
Fun fact, my sibling (who got me into tma) calls jon-martin lonely eye's jr (since the fandom has dubbed elias-peter lonely eyes) and it never fails to crack me up lol
Thinking about it....actually the story metaphor makes everything between the lonely and the eye make sense The two have a weird symbiotic relationship....the 4th wall is what gives the audience purpose...after all the audience just watches not interacts...so the separation is what makes the audience the audience...while the act of watching and knowing that they will never be part of the story enforces the isolation and loneliness created
i think the lonely coming in season 4 makes sense, not only from jons stand point of losing everyone around him, as well as becoming more isolated from humanity by becoming more monstrous but also overall thematic narrative someone made the point the 5 seasons track onto the five stages of grief and it fits neatly :Dd
To quote the meme I saw on tumblr once Lukas family: (worshipping the lonely) (Sounds of crying coming from the corner) Peter: Lonely is that you crying again? Lonely: ...yes Peter: why are you crying? Lonely: because I'm alone Peter: What about the other entities? Why don't you hang out with them? Lonely: The other entities are mean! Peter: Even the vast? Lonely: no, the vasts my friend, but it makes me feel alone Peter: You are alone 😐 Lonely: Lonely: Lonely: Peter you f*cking-
The Lonely would have loved covid- I truely thought that the lonely was real when quarentine arrived. Like let's be real a pandemic that causes a quarentine could definetly be the lonely joining forces with the corruption since the corrupcion is also fond of infection. It could also trigger a few ideas of the extinction and the end however i don't think that they really fit in to the master plan. If anything i feel like these two would just piggyback on the idea of the pandemic.
I'm not sure if you're going to mention it later, but Martin had Web tendencies too,but Peter took advantage of his proneness to loneliness first, so Martin's fate changed A Web Eye Martin would be too powerful tbh
I think in one of the q’n’a’s they talk about how Martin was originally meant to be an avatar of the lonely and that it got changed and the filled with spiders was supposed to be a nod to that, further connecting the web to the authors
This was a really neat one. I love the composition of the picture. Tbh the fog motif The Lonely has is incredibly good. Even aside from being creepy fog that makes for cool fanart, it's helped me actually be able to conceptualize my own feelings of isolation. When I'm feeling particularly alone, I put the 😶🌫️ emoji or the 🌫️ emoji in my Discord status so that any of my Magnus-enjoying friends can know that I need a little extra attention and interaction that day without me bugging them directly about it and then feeling like a bother. Anyway, I can't wait for the next episode! The Stranger is one of my favorites, right alongside The Vast! As a theater person, it's entire aesthetic is super appealing to me.
Another really good entry in this series! Really appreciate what you're doing here. It's well-structured, the background art is cool, and your voice is nice to listen to. Thanks!
Out of all entities I Think lonely is hardest to do diverse manifestations. How many spooky " i am alone" can you do? But RQ pulled it of very well. Also i found it intriguing how its most tertiary fear of all, after how many statements involved more than one person?
I almost think Jon should have been Peter Lucas's target instead of Martin. Jon is so issolated in season 4 that he seems ripe for the Lonely. Trying to steal Jon from Elias/Jonah as part of their wager would have made more sense. Trap The Archivist in the Lonely to foil The Watcher's Crown. Having Peter Lucas spirit Martin away and force Jon to rescue him being Elias/Jonah's plan all along would have made more sense.
Maybe for the storytelling analogy, the Lonly could be the scenes and concepts that did not make it into the final story, cut out and forgotten on the cutting floor
Oh Martin did, before Lukas, start not noticing people. A friend of mine actually caught this on her first listen through saying it made sense martin was connected to the lonely (again, before lukas)
yeah tbh season 4 of tma is def my least favorite, but i still love the lonely (and i connect the most to it) but it feels very out of place in the story. btw amazing series watching it all rn
Just FYI, "boat-swain" is pronounced "bosun" (and is sometimes spelled that way). Just one of those weird artifacts of English being such a mongrel shape-shifter of a language. Nitpicky, I guess, but I think it's neat and wanted to share. :)
Thank you! I... think I've corrected it in more recent videos? I learned how it's meant to be pronounced AFTER this video but, for some reason, I always read the word as "boat-swain." Gotta fix that.
I love when Gerry says “ya know for a cult dedicated to the lonely, they sure do breed”

The physical manifestation of the 4th wall is a good point...to a certain degree the 4th wall does isolate the audience from the world of the story
