    Might I suggest you read "Executioner Pierrepoint", Albert Pierrepoint's autobiography. You would learn that Pierrepoint never met the condemned at an execution in Britain before entering the cell to strap the prisoner's arms and lead him into the gallows chamber. He would observe the prisoner either while he was exercising or through a spy hole in the cell door. The prisoner would be weighed and measured by the prison, not the executioner, and the information given to the hangman.
    Pierrepoint would chalk a T not an X on the trapdoor marking where the prisoner's feet should be, and he always used a white cap not a black one. The white cap was traditional in Britain at all executions.
    The prisoner was not identified before the execution except in Scotland where he would be asked his name. Everyone knew who he was.
    The only time Pierrepoint met the condemned before the execution and arranged the weighing and measuring was when he was hanging some German war criminals, such as those from Belsen, but these executions were in Germany and other European countries, not Britain.

      @@sgtfoxhound Did you know that there was never actually a 'last' hangman? The two last executions carried out in the UK were done simultaneously, at two separate prisons, by two separate executioners. This was done to ensure that no-one could claim to be the last hangman. I've got volumes on UK executioners - an interesting insight into society through the years. Have a look at 'A Hangman's Tale' - written by Syd Dernley, who often assisted Pierrpoint.

    The condemned cell still shows warn flooring where the condemned had paced up and down. Also the gibbet is still there. Ive seen these things first hand having been a prisoner in HMP Wandsworth.
    They've kept the gibbet for obvious reasons.

    What happened to Allied prisoners of war who joined the Axis armies?

    • @TroyCarson-p9r
      @TroyCarson-p9r 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Depends on the Allied country. The postwar Soviet Union held a large number of trials against the so-called “traitors to the Motherland and accomplices,” usually collaborators, spies, soldiers who defected to the other side during the war or one of Stalin's political enemies. Due to the secrecy of the Soviet and modern Russian regimes, the exact number of people who were executed is unknown, but is thought to number in the tens of thousands. In contrast, only three traitors have been executed in the U.S. since its founding.
      During WW2 itself, Soviet military tribunals convicted almost a million soldiers for various crimes, with about 135,000 of them executed.

    Pierrepoint did not use a black hood, he used a white hood as he is on record showing on multiple occassions. Please do your research a little more diligently. Pierrepoint would not meet the prisoner he would have the weight and height already and he would observe the prisoner in the exercise yard to then calculate the correct drop.

      He often observed them in their cells secretly, too. He never dithered or delayed once they entered the condemned cell. Pierrepont took great pride in making the process as quick as possible to minimise the distress of the prisoner. He claimed his fastest execution was 7 seconds from opening the condemned prisoner's cell to opening the trapdoor.

    With a lot of people asking why was he hanged by the British, I would say do your research before throwing stones. Other countries have put to death people who were not their citizens. As most people were not around in the late 40's, never lived through the war and what went with it. It's impossible to judge by today's standards something that happened over 80 year's.

    Oswald Job was not German, so wouldn't his name be pronounced 'Iob' but Job?

    • @jayt9608
      @jayt9608 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That depends on the linguistics surrounding his name. Not too long ago, or an eternity depending on your age, the letter I also covered the sounds made by Y and J, as a remnant of the merger of Greek, Latin, and Etruscan in pronunciation. At the time certain words were spun off with using the new letters, words that had originally started with I now began with J, such as Jesus, Jehovah, and Job/job among others. It could be that this man's name retained the original pronunciation while undergoing the revised spelling.
      It is also possible, if not probable that it is being read incorrectly. Neither would surprise me.
