Played the hell out of The Witcher 3 on PS4 and loved every minute of it. Replayed it recently on Switch and even that version is great (albeit with slightly lower visuals)
what about the mass effect legendary edition? it was amazing replaying all the mass effect games again. all tho i would skip the first one and jump into the second one straight away
I heard that Trail of Cold Steel was amazing several years ago, and that there was an awesome interconnecting storyline, so I started from Trails in the Sky 1. Several years later after going through the Liberl Arc, Crossbell Arc and now in Trails of Cold Steel III, still loving it and loving the world building, events of the world and characters. No regrets.
Dude, trails of cold steel is amazing. The way they tie all the previous games together into this series was nothing short of brilliant. When I finally finished 4, I was like , lost because the ride was finally over. Only great games make impact like that
I was recommended this series a ways back told how incredible the storytelling and gameplay is even back to 1. Plenty each game to do weapons armor etc definitely worth the money!
One of my surprise favorites was Yakuza: Like a Dragon. I was reluctant to play it because no Kiryu, and I wasn't sure about the turn based combat in a Yakuza game, but I ended up falling in love with it. ❤️
I love all the yakuza games. I've played about 15 hours on like a dragon but I'm finding it very repetitive and have stopped playing. Maybe I should give it another go.
THIS! I’m not a fan of strategy RPGs, but my god the story is so damn good. Does anyone have suggestions for other suggestions with a story as good as this? I picked it up on a whim from an RPG site and only knew about it because it was on a podcast, but it’s just that damn good.
I'd like to recommend Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which I finished recently and was completely floored. The devs took a big risk in changing up from the action formula of the past Yakuza games, but the turn based rpg nature of LAD worked beautifully with the kind of story they were trying to tell.
I've played yakuza 0-6 and Judgment and Lost Judgment and going through yakuza 7 now and it's so good especially if you like yakuza and jrpgs. I'm around level 50 and in chapter 12
I always wanted to play Yakuza, but was off put by brawler combat. I'm so glad they've changed combat system in Like a Dragon. That made it one of the best jRPGs I've ever played.
Fantastic game! Great characters. I tried other Yakuza games and Judgement, but could never get into them. I think I would have preferred to watch a movie of it as the story and characters seemed interesting. But Like a Dragon was magic.
So far for me Witcher 3 is the only one that's not on this list that I've played. It got me into the books, which in turn got me into writing, so that game is pretty special. Never played another game that inspired me to stare at an empty word document for a couple hours a day
Could have been a good game if the combat wS any better than Mike Tysons Punchout on NES. Dodge. Hit. Hit. Dodge. Cliche fire spell. Cliche fortify spell. Dodge. Hit. Zero challenge. Every fight breaks the immersion. Garbage implementation of a beautiful open world
Ys 8 is probably my favorite RPG of the ps4 gen. Something about it is so smooth. The combat feels so good. The music is some of my favorite of any game of the last gen.
Ys 8 is one of the best games I've ever played. I'm a huge Souls fan but Ys 8 gives them all a run for their money. Fantastic game. I'll never stop preaching to my friends and anyone who'll listen that they NEED to play it
@@stevenevans3312 Ok, but how are they amazing? I heard Crystar kind of plays like an Ys game. So I think I will like that gameplay style. If there is anything else you can add to that, please do. For Scarlet Nexus it looks like it plays like a Dynasty warriors game which I would love. Does it?
I think Scarlet Nexus is a lot of fun. Playing as two protagonists through the story, building on the powers of your team and just the overall beauty of the art and style of the UI. I liked it and am still replaying parts now.
Trails of cold steel is a fantastic series to play, the best world building i've seen in an RPG. Had to go the play the previous trails games in the series after finishing 4 to see what i've missed. And with Y's as well fell in love with the series after 8 and my dad is also now super into Y's as well after i bought him 8 on the switch.
I like trails in the sky but I felt like cold steel was just the most generic weebshit ever. Maybe the other games after 1 are better but I couldn't do it.
@@Caroline_Alys Currently going through Cold steel 1, they honestly kind of dropped the ball on this one. I'm enjoying it, but the cast is easily the worst so far compared to the Sky and Crossbell games. I also dislike how they've been cranking up the stupid anime crap with each game since Zero, rolling my eyes after each time they say the girls are hot or talk about how badly they want to get into Rean's pants is getting tiring.
@@nathangarcia3953 Trails series has a great world building, Cold Steel story was ok, but my god, they really need to drop the power of friendship deus ex machina and "do you have the resolve?" sht over and over again. Rean in CS1: Bohoo, I'm so weak. Later: I have the resolve. Rean in CS2: Bohoo, I'm so weak. Later: I have the resolve. And so on until CS4. God, it became so repetitive. The self-sacrifice, goody boy, chick magnet MC is already way over done.
You all have to admit that The Witcher 3 was a fluke. The series isn't that amazing, the books are kinda meh, and CD Projekt Red isn't that great of a company. Yes The Witcher 3 is a good game, but it's not amazing.
Nier, Persona 5 and Bloodborne are not only my favorite RPGs ever, but also my favorite games of all time, if you have a ps4/ps5 and haven't tried them yet, you should consider doing so; they are all really fun to play and they all have great music and either a great story or a great world building.
I just played through this one again and I think it's undoubtedly the most endearing story of any JRPG I've played. It's in my top 5 JRPGs of the last decade. However, it's a far cry from a masterpiece for me and I really wish they would have made some quality of life changes in the remaster instead of just slapping a fresh coat of paint on it. 1. Leveling in this game is a pain. Resetting familiars back to LVL1 after metamorphosis is a bad mechanic. Halving the level would have been better. Any meaningful leveling you can do is limited to defeating Toko and its evolutions. Regular encounters simply don't give enough EXP towards the latter half of the game. 2. Some of the Alchemy recipes are impossible to create unless you spend hundreds of hours grinding for the materials which you can only get off of gold enemies (like shiny Pokemon) which have a ludicrously low encounter rate. 3. The whole game should have been voice acted for all story related content. Of the dozen or so scenes that were voice acted, only 60% or so of them were meaningful to the story. A 10 second voice acted scene of someone saying someone's name then make some noise like "uuuhhhhhhhh aahhhhhhhhhh!!!!" is pointless when there are much more involved scenes you have to read through. 4. Dinoceros and Griffen should have been rebalanced in the remaster. 5. The world map should have been better. You should have been allowed to zoom in on another area even if you weren't there. 6. Attacks in combat that disrupt the entire flow to show some cutscene were a bad decision. 7. Swaine tales FOREVER to execute a trick shot. 8. Esther's battle AI should have been better balanced to burn less MP and balance MP burn with physical attacks when 2 of her favoured genuses are more physical combat focused. 9. The game should have been broken up into 2 games since 90% of the game is chasing down Shadar and defeating him feels like the end of the game but NOPE here comes the White witch that Oliver had no clue even existed until she unleashed Manna right at the end of the game and introduced herself. White witch should have been in a second game or removed from the plot entirely. Anyway, that's enough because I could list more problems with this game but I'd be sitting here on the toilet all day. Point is, I accept that others can feel this game is a "masterpiece", but for me, it's not. But it is a top 5. It has a lot of flaws but is still really good overall.
Tales of Berseria is one of my favorite games of all time. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had a game with so much character development as this game. The combat had a very steep learning curve, but it’s really addictive once you get the hang of it. Highly recommended.
Needless to say, the Playstation 4 is THE system for JPRG games. Many of which are in 1080p at 60 fps. Even in a turn-based RPG (Dragon Quest 11 definitive edition for example), games running at 60 fps (at least) look and play excellent. I am very excited for future JRPG games for my Playstation 5.
And, not unimportant, the PS4 is a cheap console to collect for currently! Yes, there are individual expensive titles, but still a large library of excellent JRPGs for $20, $15, even $10 a piece.
DQ11 DE runs @ 60 fps only on PS4 Pro/ PS5 and Xbox One X/ Series X. Graphics look worse than in vanilla DQ11, but I'd rather take higher res and 60 fps than pretty graphics.
@@axogreen876 Yeah lately PC has gotten tons more support from japanese devs, and sometimes it's the only platform with uncensored titles. There's still some broken ports but overall the amount and quality of releases now is much higher than before. And if you count emulation, a PC has pretty much every JRPG you can think of heh
So glad you brought up Dragon's Crown. Despite the controversy around the whole bust size thing, it's a fantastic game if you're a fan of that old King Arthur/D&D side scrolling ARPGs. The only thing that was missing for me in your list was Tokyo Xanadu Ex+. It's such a criminally overlooked game, lots of fun, Persona-esque mix of ARPG segments and slice of life.
It wasn't even a true "controversy," really. It was just one web site (Kotaku) deliberately stirring up shit for clicks and ad revenue. Hilariously enough, their manufactured "controversy" actually HELPED Dragon's Crown by drawing attention to it, resulting in DC becoming Vanillaware's best-selling title.
I know you’re more of a JRPG guy, but I heartily recommend Divinity Original Sin. It plays like a dream on PS4 with incredible rumble feedback. Role-Playing Game in literal sense.
It's been mentioned a few times already in the comments, but everything in the Yakuza universe is PAINFULLY well-executed. All of the main games are playable on the PS4 (0, Kiwami 1& 2, remasters of 3 4 5, then 6, and then Like a Dragon) in addition to the two OTHER games from the same studio that follow a similar formula/universe (Judgment and Lost Judgment) which immediately puts it on the 'Best Of' list of games for me. I recommend it to anyone who will listen to me shout its praises from the mountaintops, and it helps that the price point is very reasonable.
Weekends just aren't the same without You, Robbman, and Kim. No matter the subject matter, your enthusiasm takes engagement to a new level. There are games that before subbing to your channel I wouldn't have even considered(or even casually made fun of), but after years of listening to you talk about these worlds, it's impossible to not feel that same passion. Without your introduction, I literally would never have touched a Dragon Quest game. Now, it's one of my most anticipated world to become more familiar with. You're so wonderful at riding a perfect balance between new things(i.e robb and your thoughts on Metroid Dread), but also dipping into unknown pockets. Without your updates, there's a portion of the gaming world that would never have been opened up to me. Always so grateful for the perspectives you have. They're different and valued for that reason. Sublime. Thank you for always being authentic.
Trails of Cold Steel! I think, when I look back on my time with the PS4 10 years from now, I’ll definitely associate the system with getting me into FALCOM with both Trails and Y’s. One that wasn’t mentioned is Atelier, specifically Atelier Ryza. That game got me into that series. I went out and bought every game in the series that I could get my hands on. Such a charming and different kind of RPG! Thanks for another great vid!
Add CrossCode and Indivisible to the list. Seriously Johnny, if you love PSO vibes, for the love of fuck, play CrossCode!!! One of the most underrated action RPG's of when it came out!
Hell yeah. I've played a bit of Origin and it was pretty good. 8 though? Masterpiece. Loved every single second. I usually don't care for exploration or sidequests but that game is so good I tried to do absolutely everything I could. Even getting close to the ending made me sad, because I knew it was going to end
Definitely worth doing a 2nd playthrough as Hugo. And then a third playthrough with the 3rd character you unlock after beating the game with Yunica & Hugo. *i won't say his name to avoid spoilers*
Transformers Devestation. I mention it because I don't think most people will think of it as an RPG, but it is. You gain levels, increase your stats, get new weapons. It's an RPG! The RPG elements are fairly light, but there's enough there that I think it qualifies. And it's such a good game. Platinum combat at peak awesome and a pitch perfect reimagining of the old '80s Transformers cartoon. The only problem is that it's too short. I really wish it had a sequel with more characters (both Autobot and Decepticon). Other great games you didn't mention: 13 Sentinels Blue Reflection Disgaea 5 (and Disgaea 1, too) Final Fantasy X/X-2 remaster Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne Valkyria Chronicles 4
You mentioned Tales of Vesperia and Zestiria, but Berseria is my favorite Tales game on the PS4 so far! (Haven't played Arise yet, but will pick it up for PS5).
Nioh 2 is a fantastic RPG and offers some of the best combat and combat variety on the PS4. I'd also add Dark Souls 3 and bloodborne. The Surge 2 is also pretty good. Elden Ring may soon top the list.
@@mountainmgtow5421 Didn't know you could level up and make builds, create different characters, pick dialogue options and get different endings in Zelda 🤔. They're not like Zelda, yes they're action RPGs. But that makes em RPGs. There's not just tabletops out there
@@Walamonga1313 You can do that in NBA 2K21 too, therefore that's an RPG. Same with Call of Duty, that's an RPG too then. How about Tetris? Is that an RPG as well? You have zero classification for what an RPG is.
I’m about 8 hours into Tokyo Xanadu and I am obsessed!! Very persona-y and it puts in a ton of love into the characters and relationship building with them
I know I'm a bit late to the party on this video, but I wanted to say thanks! I've been looking for some more games to play, so this was really useful.
Keep up the “Y’s Evangelism” your words turned me towards the action based fantasy metal of Y’s. And now, I am doing my part to spread Y’s to all gamers of every platform. Episode suggestion “Music of Y’s”. Awesome choices. Some of those games I have on the Vita or the PS4. All most done with nightmare mode for Y’s Origin, try to unlock Yunica's schoolgirl outfit.
I’m a huge fan of the Utawarerumono series. It’s pretty much a visual novel with tactical RPG gameplay. I loved the series and you don’t hear much about it.
For turn-based games, nothing can beat Dragon Quest XI on my list ;) others, in no particular order: Nier, Witcher 3, Digimon Story, Battlechasers Nightwar, Dragon's Dogma, Kingdom Hearts (the lot of them), Persona 5 Royal & Strikers, and Yakuza Like a Dragon. And that's just the ones that are on the shelf in front of me...
Most interesting action rpg so far would be "hellpoint". When you begin that game you are almost lost in how mysterious things are and how items and weapons work. World there is full of riddles and secret areas. A real blast although difficult as heck. Greetz
@@FirstLast-yc9lq I started with Trails of Cold Steel and worked my way to the fourth one. While it's recommended, you don't *have* to start there. Trails of Cole Steel 3 and 4 do a good job of giving some background to the Liberl and Crossbell arcs while also staying consistent with the Erebonian arc.
@@FirstLast-yc9lq Ah. Good point actually. I didn't even take into consideration how impactful the spoilers could be to someone who wants a spoiler-free run. Now on the topic of characters, I don't know dude. I REALLY like Rean and both Class VII's.
Bloodborne absolutely has to be on this list. It's not only a system-selling game that helped put FROMSOFTWARE on the map, it is also the best action RPG I've ever played. Definitely a 10/10 must play game.
@@dukesden713 I'm saying in this video he's only talking about JRPGs rather than just Normal RPGs. If it was a Normal RPG list than bloodborne would've made the list easy. When free is used in slang it's referring to something being easy. "Against a opponent like him that's a free win."
@@xviinaichi3793 true. The title does say RPG, though. Also to be fair bloodborne is made by a Japanese company so is it not a jrpg as much as ni no kuni 2? Yeh I get the use of the slang but you just threw it in at the end. Super confusing without any punctuation 😂
I recently got a ps5 and I haven't had a home playstation console since the ps2. I have a switch and Xbox so have played most of the jrpgs that are on them and cross-platform. I recently been going back and rebuying a lot of the Xbox 360 exclusive jrpgs that are backwards compatible. When I got my ps5 I bought ff7 remake intergrade, p5 royal, Tokyo Xanadu ex+, sakura wars, .hack//sign GU recode, Tales of beseria, Tales of zestria, ys memories of celceta, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2. I appreciate this list, shows me some others I need to grab
While I don't think it's a good game, Zestiria was my first Jrpg and got me into jrpgs so it has a special place in my heart For trails, it's my favorite series and yes I do love it to death :) It's important to play all the games in order to get the most out of it tho Trails in the sky trilogy is phenomenal and so is the crossbell games
@@Mrjamiek7 it's not the best experience tho And Hajimari will be a really bad experience without the crossbell games Cold steel 3&4 are so so much better if you played all the games
I wouldn't put this as an RPG, but it was made by the same studio that made Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown. That game is 13 sentinels aegis rim. I feel it does not get talked about as much. Even though it has sold over 400,000 copies, and has good reviews.
I got Kingdom Come Deliverance onsale on the PS4 store for $10. That includes all the DLC content. Husband and I have been loving it! Henry of Skalits for the rule!

To name a few off top of my head. I could go old school, but few have those consoles besides us. There's Megamanaia, the original Donkey Kong, Packman, Mrs. Packman, Tetris, Star Fox.. The new Ark is going to be only on PC, so dumb. I would've bought it for PS5. I bought Elden Ring, don't like it so far so won't recommend it. If you enjoy games that are nothing but battle after battle, kind of like watching Nurato, then you might like Elden Ring. Beyond exploration and battles, it lacks substance. They SAY it has a story line, a plot. It doesn't, not really. The cut scenes are less than 10 seconds with no depth.
@@KyleenDrake I love every Fromsoft game. The stories are told via in game item description and npc dialogue. You kind of have to peace it together yourself. But I honestly look all the lore up to complicated otherwise. But they are highly divisive games always have been. It's either you love it or hate it. I'm currently on days gone it got kind of bad reviews but I find myself enjoying it aside from some of the voice acting. I also loved the last gaurdian. Fun to play together solving puzzles with my girlfriend. We also liked it takes two. I saw final fantasy 7 remake is comming to the ps Plus Extra subscribtion. Is this a good jumping in point? I never really got into them back in the day. But I've heard nearly legendary stories about number 7 so I'm looking forward to that. Thanks for your extensive list always nice to find some new games. Edit: I still have the Nintendo and super Nintendo hooked up. I'm not really a collector but I kept playing those as those where the only consoles I had until the PlayStation 3. Lol
One that I think you should play is the EvoLand Legendary Edition. It's really funny and funny to boot. The throwback across time from the beginning of RPGs to now is a great ride I was sure glad to be a part of. Gotta try it Johnny. I'm sure Kim will surely love it as well. It's got a lot of charm and personality. One for the ages
First I was not so crazy about FFXV and I even sold it. Somehow my wife bought it me again recently and it totally gelled. So much, I'm completely hooked to RPGs now and I started hoarding all the modern classics and remakes; which is where your channel comes in Really handy. Incredible how many excellent games I've missed because I didn't like that genre, until recently.
The Dark Souls series and Bloodborne are not only some of my favorites on PS4, but some of my favorite games ever. Also a huge fan of Fallout 3, 4 and New Vegas.
I cannot count the number of times I replayed Code Vein on the PS4. It's not the best or worst souls-like game, but I really enjoyed playing through it repeatedly. Now I'm just speed running it.
I'm only missing the coins trophy for my platinum fun game, by the 3rd playthrough I was still having a blast as I better understood the combat mechanics
You mentioned Vanillaware's other games, but don't skip 13 Sentinels!! I guess you can argue it's more of a visual novel than an RPG because of how little combat there is in it, but it's sooooo good! The most impressed I've been with a video game story since Xenogears, definitely check it out
That is so good to hear, I have the game but I've only played a little bit because I've been in the middle of other games and 13 sentinels just keeps calling my name.
As far as ones you didn't mention, Valkyria Chronicles 4 was great, the original Valkyria also got a remaster. I really enjoyed Metal Max Xeno. That was a weird one, but customizing your own fleet of tanks was addicting and fun. I love Vanillaware anything so although you mentioned Odin's Sphere and Dragon's Crown, I can't leave out 13 Sentinels, which was a masterpiece.
The Trails series is phenomenal, and absolutely worth going back to the original Trails in the Sky trilogy and giving them a playthrough. My personal favorite story arc thus far, however, is the Crossbell arc (Trails from Zero/Trails to Azure), the middle two entries that sort of bridge some gaps between Sky and Cold Steel. They really handle world building in an exceptional way with these games.
Star Ocean: Integrity & Faithlessness, Valkyria Chronicles Remaster & VC4, Star Ocean: First Departure R (Still praying for physical), Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age. These are the ones off the top of my head, honestly you covered a good majority of the great ones. I’d have to look at my stack to see if there’s other I forgot about.
Tales of Beseria and Yakuza series, including the spin Judgement and Lost Judgment are amazing RPGs and i actually think Dragon's Age Inquisition Game of the Year Edition is amazimg as well
Odin Sphere is one of my favorites! The combo system is so well done, the music and the art direction is fantastic, you really cant go wrong with this one. I don't have a PS4 but I play it on the PS3 and is still beautiful as always.
I started to have a hard time liking modern JRPGs. I was totally into SNES and PS1 JRPGs, but the last 3 i liked to some degree were Xenoblade Chronicles 2, FFXV and Witcher 3. But good, turn-based 2D JRPGs like PS1 Suikoden for example are rare these days.
@@newgameaaaa The fight system, artstyle and the open world. I don't like action-based at all, but this one was ok to me. It is not that i really liked it, i just don't hate it.

@@forwatching11 Yeah....260 Game of the Year awards, one of the greatest soundtracks of all time, some of the best dlc ever released and can you name an open world game with a better story?
@@FirstLast-yc9lq I did also point out WHY my argument stands and no...Morrowind does not have a better story. Morrowind suffers from the same fate that most open world games do and that is the story gets lost in all the freedom the game provides. What makes The Witcher III unique is that the story is never too far from what is going on in the sidequests. The plot is always very present so even while you are doing other things (exploration, hunting quests, etc.), you always feel like you are progressing in the world that was created. In fact, I can't think of another open world game that even comes close in terms of narrative.
@@forwatching11 Again...The Last of Us 2 was a great game. Not nearly as good as the first game but still a great game. Just because you are too big of a pussy to be able to handle your feelings with Joel or lesbians doesn't make it a bad game.
@@FirstLast-yc9lq This is all subjective. Seems like you prefer creating a character and the ability to create your own story as you go as opposed to playing as Geralt and playing the story that was crafted for the player. To each their own but I do understand your point and prefer that style sometimes too. I'm just saying, for what it did, I think The Witcher III offered a story of epic proportions that was damn near impeccable from start to finish. To dismiss it as "a Ubisoft game" because there was icons on a map is doing the game a massive disservice.
@@FirstLast-yc9lq Lol You think that impact on the world was always a purpose for open world design and I couldn't disagree more. Impact on the world doesn't mean jackshit when a narrative is as good as what is provided in The Witcher III. Open world has always been much more about exploration than anything else. What sets The Witcher III apart from the rest is what it provides in terms of narrative on top of all that exploration. Also, the combat in Witcher III, while not great, is still far better than any Bethesda game. Period. Full stop. We can go on and on about this but the awards, it's status among players and it's standing as one of the greatest RPGs still hold strong. The Witcher III was, is and will always be an incredible game.
@@rem5779 Yup! Played through everyone. I love the SAO games. Really enjoyed the new on Alicization Lycoris. Best they've done yet. Usually when I see an RPG get a 6/10 rating I immediately know I'm gonna enjoy it. Something about niche RPGs are super fun.
My own comment suggests Salt and Sanctuary, and I would recommend Vampyr for it's story telling and Lore, but it has long loading times and will freeze on occasion. Vampyr has a lot of cool things going for it, but it only has an auto save file which was done on purpose for players to feel the consequences of their choices and not have a backup save, I do recommend a spoiler free walkthrough or guide.
I would recommend Greedfall which was a PS+ free game from a while ago. It’s like an older BioWare game’s story/writing done with a modern Ys budget. I was really surprised at how much I was convinced by and invested in the world building.

ps4 is truly the best console for jrpg since ps1. ff7r, dq11, p5, trails, nier, and the list goes on.
John you need to get 13 sentinels: Aegis Rim. Its vanillaware at its best. I think Kim would really like it as well
Also comes with an art book that I'm sure he'll enjoy
incredible game, one of my favorites
@@megami215 It's a visual novel, but with vanillaware quality, it has an RTS mode with the robots too, this game growth on me.

Ya it was great....i fully expected Cold STeel 4 to be my Goty 2020 but 13 Sentinels took it instead
13 sentinels…. Please for the love of god play it people.

THIS! I’m not a fan of strategy RPGs, but my god the story is so damn good. Does anyone have suggestions for other suggestions with a story as good as this? I picked it up on a whim from an RPG site and only knew about it because it was on a podcast, but it’s just that damn good.
I loved the story but the characters and gameplay were meh.
You have to play the game on the hardest difficulty otherwise it’s piss easy and boring
While not as good I think you’ll probably like ai the somnium files it starts a little slow but there are some great characters and plot twists.
No mention of Tales of Berseria the pain it hurts, I loved that game
I had the same feeling watching this video just now. How to not mention Tales of Berseria?!?
I'd like to recommend Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which I finished recently and was completely floored. The devs took a big risk in changing up from the action formula of the past Yakuza games, but the turn based rpg nature of LAD worked beautifully with the kind of story they were trying to tell.
God that game was soooooooo good. Nunchuk phone 😃😃
I've played yakuza 0-6 and Judgment and Lost Judgment and going through yakuza 7 now and it's so good especially if you like yakuza and jrpgs. I'm around level 50 and in chapter 12
For real. I played like a dragon on game pass and it blew me away. I had never played Yakuza before. I can't recommend it enough. It's so much fun.
Odin Sphere blew my mind, one of my favorite RPGs on the Ps4, I also loved Dragons Crown I need to go back and finish it.
The PS2 era is still my favorite of them all.
PS1 and PS2 here.

Was an incredible experience for sure
Ys 8 is one of the best games I've ever played. I'm a huge Souls fan but Ys 8 gives them all a run for their money. Fantastic game. I'll never stop preaching to my friends and anyone who'll listen that they NEED to play it
Ys 8 also looks quite impressive on the PS Vita.
Ys 8 for sure . I 100% agree. The storytelling took me back to the golden era (SNES, PS1) of RPGs.
@Chris M Yeah, it isn't imperative to have played the previous games... you can start with 8.
Sakura Wars, Scarlet Nexus, and Tokyo Xanadu EX+, Fairy Tail, Cry Star, and Rogue Galaxy are all fantastic and worth playing.
What's good about Scarlet Nexus?
crystar and scarlet nexus are amazing
@@stevenevans3312 Ok, but how are they amazing? I heard Crystar kind of plays like an Ys game. So I think I will like that gameplay style. If there is anything else you can add to that, please do. For Scarlet Nexus it looks like it plays like a Dynasty warriors game which I would love. Does it?
Yeah Crystar plays like the Y's series and has a dark story. Scarlet Nexus is a more technical version of Dynasty Warriors.
Your list is sooooo good! Dragons Dogma deserves jump for this top tier ps4 JRPG games too!
Nier, Persona 5 and Bloodborne are not only my favorite RPGs ever, but also my favorite games of all time, if you have a ps4/ps5 and haven't tried them yet, you should consider doing so; they are all really fun to play and they all have great music and either a great story or a great world building.
Played all of them and yeah, they're all great fun.
Bloodborne is as much of an RPG as Need for Speed. Everything's an RPG now!
If my grandma had wheels she'd be a bike.
Tokyo Xanadu . This is definitely one I'd love to hear about from you and Kim.
Ni No Kuni 1 is a must play for all JRPG fans! Truly a masterpiece and fun for all ages
Agreed and it's better than Ni No Kuni 2.
@@gmac673 absolutely, no questions asked lol. I’m happy people enjoyed 2 but honestly the first game is just better
I had so much fun with that game!
Late to these comments just wanted to confirm 1 is leaps and bounds better than 2. No competition.
Tales of Berseria is one of my favorite games of all time. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had a game with so much character development as this game. The combat had a very steep learning curve, but it’s really addictive once you get the hang of it. Highly recommended.
Do you have tips I platinum tales of arise a couple weeks ago kinda wanted to do it for this game
Skyrim is like a good book with tons of jank that you keep coming back to. Start as a mage end as a stealth archer haha.
The most wholesome gaming channel ever 🙏🏾😌
Assassin's Creed Origins. The world of Egypt was incredible to explore, and a compelling protagonist.
I would say the PC is, even if you don't count emulation. But PS4 is really good too
DQ11 DE runs @ 60 fps only on PS4 Pro/ PS5 and Xbox One X/ Series X.
I got bored at about 12hrs. I couldn't cook, drove me crazy.
I hope they make Dragon's Crown 2🤞🤞
@@elirivera3880 Watch a youtube vid or read a walkthrough bro, the cooking is fun once you get the hang of it.
@@dexocube Pretty much, it's a learning curve but there's a good guide on gfaqs about it. :)

Trails of Cold Steel! I think, when I look back on my time with the PS4 10 years from now, I’ll definitely associate the system with getting me into FALCOM with both Trails and Y’s.

Just beat Origin with Yunica. Playing as Hugo now. It’s my first Ys game and I ordered Ys8 for PS4.

I’m so sad he mentioned Odins sphere and dragons crown but not 13 sentinels :(.
Masterpiece of a game. It's in my top five of all time.
What did you like about Xenoblade Chronicles 2?
@@newgameaaaa The fight system, artstyle and the open world. I don't like action-based at all, but this one was ok to me. It is not that i really liked it, i just don't hate it.
@@TomAHawk-py6vj Ok sounds good. I like action RPGs and I think I would like it.
Because of how many times you've recommended it I am getting Y's Orgin on the Switch next week.
Really excited to dive into my first Y's!
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is the best rpg on the PS4. I would also include:
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Bloodborne
Dark Souls trilogy
Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate II
Planescape Torment/Icewind Dale
Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Age
Final Fantasy X/X-2
Final fantasy type-0 is often overlooked but it is fantastic.
I don't play many games, but Ys Origins was amazing. loved those boss battles and the hack and slash grinding relaxing
It's my first Ys game, and I just started my third playthrough. It's so fun, and not too long.
Would love to hear the more niche RPG/JRPGs on PS4. I've played through everyone on this list. Great list but I need some new RPGs to play!
Have you played through the SAO games? They're really fun. Not highly rated but still fun to play if you like action JRPGs.
Labyrinth of Refrain. Fantastic story, well worth your time. Its a first person turn based dungeon crawler like Etrian Odyssey.
I'd recommend Crystar and Tokyo Xanadu ex.
I would recommend Greedfall which was a PS+ free game from a while ago. It’s like an older BioWare game’s story/writing done with a modern Ys budget. I was really surprised at how much I was convinced by and invested in the world building.
Putting this on my favorites right now. Thanks for all the tips Johnny, really appreciate.
Tales games on the PS4: Berseria, Zhestiria, Berseria and Arise. Amazing games. Specially Arise.
Ps: I cannot wait to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake part 2 on the PlayStation 9.
Great content 👍
Some great great ones that you didn’t mention:
The witcher 3
Horizon zero dawn
The outer worlds
Fist of the north star : lost paradise
Pyre
13 sentinels
Nino kuni 1
Tales of berseria
Bloodborne
Sekiro
Dark souls trilogy
Nioh 1 and 2
HZD my favorite game of all time ! 👍
@@TheActs2021 Phenomenal game , it’s in my top 10 ( the frozen wilds dlc is as good as the base game )
@@Talesofbacklog yeah, can't wait for the sequel in February 😁
@@TheActs2021 same (:
I love D3!! So nice to see other person saying good things about it.
I’m going to use this video to create my wish list! Thank you!
DQ11, P5, and FF7R. The combat in all three. Perfection.
FF7R was dull as hell...hate how Final Fantasy wants to be Devil May Cry these days
@@damonke79 cool story. Best combat ever. Period.
@@airdrighmor1439 Best combat....ever...lolololololololololololololololol
I love the combat in FF7R too, it's just awesome when you face challenges like the shinra combat simulator. It is just perfect.
@@danielvieira2411 indeed.
The Digimon story cyber sleuth games and nexomon games are both fantastic if you enjoy monster taming games with actual stories and challenge
tales of berseria and the first nino kuni too id recommend but great list i own almost all of them lol
I started playing Dragon Quest XI a few days ago based on your recommendation, and I LOVE IT. It is wonderful. Thank you so much for this recommendation. Its been a real breath of fresh air, especially after my experience with some recent games that felt like having a stressful job instead of fun. LOVELY.
I was a bit shocked and somewhat disappointed that of the tales games you mentioned, tales of berseria didn't get a mention 😮😶 have you played it ? I do believe thay of you havent, you should. It's a must play 🤙🏼🤙🏼
*that if you havent
I just got done dragon quest 11... for the 10th time in a row because of this video! Absolutely the best game I've ever played. Now I'm back again to pick another one lol
Rogue Galaxy! What a PS2 gem. So glad it was revived via emulation for PS4.
