Struggling to feel at home. How I really feel about moving to the countryside - story 18

  • After contemplating this a lot the last weeks I decided to make this kind of raw video about the whole topic of home, and how I have felt about it. What is home to you? Is it a feeling? A country maybe? Or is it a very specific house?
    WARNING:
    In this video I walk on very thin ice. It was very shallow water (only up to my knees) and I felt safe about it, but I do not recommend doing it, and walking on ice in any shape or form is at your own risk. Do not take any chances with walking on ice, it can be fatal.
    Sometimes I think we watch people on youtube and we feel like the place where we live is not enough, its not as remote, as adventurous or as idyllic as what other people have, and we feel like if we just moved "there" we would finally feel at home. I have found something very close to that here in this town in the norwegian countryside. Doing makeovers, painting walls and all that stuff has also been helping a lot. BUT, I also kind of wanted you to know that even if its very calm and cozy here, I still feel that restlessness inside, just like I am sure many other people do.
    My other makeover videos (playlist):
    • My cottage makeovers (...
    VIDEO GEAR
    My filming camera: amzn.to/3uRNN6L
    The computer I edit on: amzn.to/3Bmy68y
    My drone: amzn.to/3JLoDej
    In this video I use music from the album "World of women" by Dávid Mágyel.
    The songs I use are:
    02:56 8. Daphne
    15:02 3. Maryam
    Find the album here: linktr.ee/davidmagyel
    Dávid also has his own TH-cam channel where he teaches his piano skills: / @davidmagyelpiano
    Other music in these videos are from www.epidemicsound.com and Artlist.io.

    Maria you’re so sweet and I love your honesty about your inner state. Being an outsider is somehow one of those strange things that builds character even when it looks like it is a hardship. I am appreciating getting to know you over the past couple years and I really hope you feel encouraged to keep it going. You’re doing a really fine job with your filmmaking and if you need anything at all, let us know. Hopefully soon it will really, REALLY take off and you will start to see the results of all your hard labours. So happy to see you reached over 4K, soon it will be 10k and then more and more. I’m here for it girl! Love from Canada 🇨🇦 💖

    Everyone has a kitchen, and since it's the heart of the home, people seek out vids on kitchens. TH-cam suggested your kitchen video which introduced me to your channel. (Don't think I would have ever googled "Norwegian foraging" or "Norwegian landscapes"). But since I've never known someone from Norway, I was intrigued---and impressed by your ice bath. And your landscape shots are truly spectacular. 😀 If you video the entire renovation at your friend's house, that will probably get a lot of views too and introduce a lot MORE people to your channel. Cheers from the USA.

    Thank you again for you r video. Life is such a journey. For me home is where I feel safe and can breathe out. I struggled for a long time to find a place that felt like home and then one day I realised home is where I chose to make it. When I stopped looking and enjoyed where I was it became home. I am surrounded by trees and mountains so that helps but it's home.

    Beautiful, heartfelt video - thank you. I can relate to much of what you say - my family emigrated to Canada from England when I was nine years old and I've felt that uprooting ever since. Even now, forty-one years later, the theme of uprooting feels like a constant in my life. Still, I think we've found our place now -- I don't know if it feels like 'home' - other than it is because it's where my husband and children are - but I'm doing my best to root down into the landscape and make it so. Sometimes, that's the best you can do. Have you ever heard the word "hiraeth" -- it's a Welsh word...you should look it up and see what you think. ;) Thanks again for sharing your beautiful world. xo ps. I came to your channel for the beautiful nature shots..and stayed for your insights and generosity of spirit. The kitchen reno was an added bonus. ;)

      Thank you so much for sharing a bit of your story too. Changing country like that, I can imagine its pretty impactful, in both good and bad ways. I agree that trying to root in the landscape is often the only option, it was probably why I felt so sad when I did not find my forest in the beginning 😆. I have not heard that, I will defenitely look it up.
      Thank you so much for that, I am really glad you enjoy the different aspects of my channel ♡

    Very nice video, Maria! I love your reflektions. I am not from Norway (moved here from Germany) but I really feel totally at home here. My place is in the south of Norway. I have also lived in Oslo and in the region of Stavanger. And I did not feel that much at home as I am doing here. Now, after living at the same place for 14 years, having our own little cottage, I feel even more at home. I really hope you will find YOUR place one day!! You are so good in making your home cozy, I think this will help a lot! I can understand your feeling in the forest. It´s much more easy to feel at home in old forests. But I have experienced that it helps a lot to visit the same place many times. After a while it turnes out to be "your place" and you feel at home 😊 Btw: I love the scene where you are standing on the ice! Klem 💚

    Gods have been angry it seems , what a storm ! so beautiful view of iced beach 🤍🤍🤍I was still a little tense to see you walking on the ice... 😉 Home , yes, i am of those who are thinking Home is inside us. But sometimes, I have to make efforts, to have the right mind...And, many times, when i go in another home for holidays, i realized i need a long time to find it's a Home, in the litterally sense. Then, yes, i think Home has his hight importance, and we need to make ours very cozy. When it’s difficult at times, I think about people like refugees who don’t have homes, and I have to admit that it gives me a little bit of gratitude. Your previous video about decorating your home was nice and creative, but i love very very much your nature videos, with foraging and your thoughts too . 🧡🧡🧡 by the way, the view when you are cycling in the snowy landscape is just magical.

    • @Mariaandtheforest
      @Mariaandtheforest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello again! Yes I think walking on this ice is not so smart, so you are right to be tense about it x).
      I feel like it takes an effort too. I have the same feeling when I move to a new place, it takes some time to fill it with your own energy maybe. And like you say, we are lucky after all to have homes. I really think this longing for "the right place" is a problem of the priviliged in a sense. After all, we have a choice, we have a roof, we can travel to new places and find new homes.
      I am glad you like my foraging videos. Hopefully there will be more of those when the snow melts. Thank you

    I grew up with a father who was military and married military. I have lived in 11 different places/states in my life. One of them overseas for a time. I have gone to I4 different schools and universities in my life. I have never been in one place more than a few years. I barely have connections to anyone from my past. It was very hard when I was young, but now as an adult I see that it shaped me a lot. I'm not afraid to move. I welcome change. People who grew up in the same place always ask me, "Why would you want to move?" AndI always say, "Home is where we are. It's not a house. It's the people." I have DIY'd all of my houses. This house we gutted the entire house and redid it all the way we want. People say, "Well you won't move again will you?" And honestly, I am thinking about it, ha! I will always have a nomad heart. But I try to make wherever I am beautiful and happy and perfect. But when its time to move on I can do it easily. I hope that you know you aren't alone in the world. There are a lot of us with a gypsy soul :)

    • @Mariaandtheforest
      @Mariaandtheforest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, thats certainly a lot of moving around. Really grateful for you thoughts on this. It is so true that there are good things about the more nomadic way of thinking. Funny that you also had this sort of DIY thing going on with all of your homes, maybe it is a thing, haha. It seems like in your life you have seen many parts of the world. And living in different places instead of just visiting them also gives such a different insight to them.
      I will keep that in mind, thank you. Judging from the comments on this video it seems many of these souls are here too.

    Some say the home is a reflection of our internal state. I find that very true. My home is a mess right now. But as I am on a healing journey, I am also transforming and healing different spaces. Inside the house and in the garden. You have greatly inspired this journey.
    I am so glad you did not have major damage in the storm. It sucks. I went through hurricane Maria. She left us without electric and water. And the government took 5 months to return them. Some people are still without electricity to this day. Now we hit a water well so we might become 100% independent from everything. We are solar so we just need to design a pumping system to take water up 30 feet up a very steep hill. This is a paradise. And you know what? I still do not feel like this is my home either. Your kitties are so cute!! They almost act like dogs playing together. Home is a difficult concept for me as well. I've always had wanderlust and crave adventure. I still haven't found 'home', and I'm 63 years old! I own my current home, but it isn't my 'home'. I may have to sell it and continue the search. Maybe for some of us, 'home' is all around us. Hi Maria from us in England. I have recently discovered your channel and am really enjoying watching your content with my 12 year old daughter who has started a herbalism course this year and we are definitely going to make some rose petal ice-cream and meadowsweet cordial. This video really struck a chord with me as you perfectly articulated how I have felt during my lifetime. I have always searched for my sense of community and home centred around the people I have chosen to be with due to work and interests but have that internal longing to find a place where I fit in. I watched a series about the Scottish Isles with British broadcaster and adventurer Ben Fogle recently and he said that you know you've found the right place when you feel that you are a part of the place - rather than owning a part of it. I hope that we all find that bone-deep sense of belonging.

    I started to write a reply, which started in on me expanding on the subject from the comments on the last video, branching off into how I got here to my new home, and I ended up with far too much to say for a comment.
    I got lost for 5 whole hours, wrote out a whole essay of things I was feeling, and went through half a full guld mint chocolate bar....
    It is 3am, and I'm only now finishing my homework.
    Anyway, my very shortened, adapted for TV answer:
    Home is complicated.
    Home is a culmination of feelings. Home is a place that is specific, but only because of the time and place you are in within your life. Home is a structure, a country, and a continent but not necessary the one you were born in, on, and around.
    To some people home is where the water doesn't taste funny, or where your own toilet is, or where you lay your head at night.
    To me, home is all of the above... and a very very strong gut feeling.
    Much love to you from these very tiny islands 💜🇫🇴

      @Mariaandtheforest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, haha, I am so happy to hear the video could be the starting point of such a reflection. I hope the work you put in brought you some clarity or at least some release.
      I agree with all the things you write about home here. Its a gut feeling for me too, but it can change suddenly, so its not static. It is actually super complicated, and I think I could also have said so much more about it, but I too have to adapt it for a short youtube version. Lucky for me it seems people still take the reflection in their own hands :-).
      Sending lots of love back to you on your island

    Thank you for this honest video. It's a good contrast to all the videos and creators that portray everything as 'rose-red', as we say in Norway. Hope you manage to find your place where you feel at home (or that you 'grow into' the place where you live). For me it was a circus, of all places. Best of luck!

      Thank you, I am glad you liked it. Being honest is a bit scary but it feels right. I was so fascinated that your home endend up being a circus! Do you work in one?

      @@Mariaandtheforest Went to a circus class at the folkehøyskole, and volunteered at the cafe at a contemporary (animal-free) circus the following summer :) . Absolutely loved the circus life! Haven't been able to do it much since then, but it did give me a feeling of being home more than I think I've experienced before.

    Thank you for another lovely video Maria, beautifully photographed and edited as always, and in this one I learned that for the last 20 years I have been mispronouncing Stavanger !! I had no idea that it was pronounced the way you said it in this video. All these years I have been pronouncing vanger to rhyme with the word hanger in English. It never occurred to me that it would be pronounced any other way. How funny. Like you we have also been having terrible storms here in England. I also agree with your comments about belonging, and I think many people feel that way, always searching for home. I know that you are facing some difficult times at present, so please know that you are in my thoughts.

      Hi Mark, I am glad you liked it. Haha, I think the way you pronounce it is the common way to pronounce it for English speaking people, so it is not really any fault of yours :-), even Norwegians often say it your way when speaking English. I guess the way we pronounce "a" in Norwegian is kind of different to the English one in general? How norwegians say my name for instance is more similar to the spanish way of saying it.
      I hope the roof or any other things on your property were not damaged in the storms. Thank you for thinking of me, I really appreciate that.

    oof this hits me. I am always bothered by neighbours so I don't feel at home often. I even moved because of it but I still don't feel at home here (from an apartment to a townhouse). I hope it will change in time.

    Maybe through all your adventures and wanderings you have been creating a map, or mental instruction manual for how YOUR idea of 'home' will come into resolution. This sounds like a cliché, but in my opinion it feels like you have stopped swimming against the currents of life, and instead you are now swimming, with intention, in a direction towards a 'shore' of your own design. I felt a message that resonated with my own 'itchiness' about the idea of home, and the anxiety I feel when I imagine spending so much time in one place. I'm constantly inspired by your courage, and your seemingly optimistic surrendering to this life you are creating!

    P.S. Wowzers... The painterly longshot at 11:09 with you biking away along the snowy road towards town is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful video moments I've seen. The scene and the music captured SO many emotions: solitude, sadness, hope, resilience, etc.. as you say it was stemmningsful

      Ethan! I miss you.
      I like your way of seeing it. I hope you'r right. It for sure feels like I am putting a lot of intention into where I am going these days. But wether or not the direction is the right one I guess only time will tell. I thought you might resonate with that feeling. It's tiring, but also creates this urge to take chances that I am sort of grateful for. We seem to be in good company, judging from the comments on this video.
      It makes me so happy that you liked that shot! Thank you. It was a bit challenging, I was slipping a lot in the snow with my bike. Now it feels worth it.

    I can't find my people where I live. How to seek them out?

    • @Mariaandtheforest
      @Mariaandtheforest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats difficult. The only advice I have is to get out there and go to different activities, things you enjoy etc, to see if your people are there. And I guess not be afraid to be that "lonely new person" even if it feels a bit awkward :-P

    Maybe you can't find a place where you belong isn't a bad thing. I never felt like I belonged anywhere and now at 60 I am fine with that. There are those of us who aren't meant to belong or fit in.
