As a minimalist, books will be the only items I possess in excess. Expanding my library is the only exception when it comes to collecting “stuff”.

Get a Kindle if you don’t have one. I have hundreds of books and they take up the space of a small notebook. The paperwhite is excellent if you want a more physical copy type reading experience

I’m glad you said that. Not that I needed permission to collect books, but I really didn’t know what to do with them as a minimalist. The books I have now are repurposed as decorations after I read them.

Specifically for ladies: Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. She uses fairy tales to explain our psyche, why we do certain things, and through her stories guides the reader into living a more full life. The first time I read it, I was in an extremely dark place (had clinical depression for 5 years), and step by step, page by page, she woke up my soul and I began to live life again. My copy is covered in highlights, post it notes, turned corners, lol and every time I dive into it, I feel something new stirring. In fact, I think it might be time to open those covers again

In seventh grade, there was a book that seems to have been relevant to each and every turning point I've even come across since. C.S. Lewis', The Screwtape Letters.
When I found this book I the school library, I had been seeking to explore my spirituality and live a more religious lifestyle than I had come to understand. This book caused me to think so pungently. So much of my idealism was spurned by pondering this book!

I'm going to read all of these books. Thanks for this Tim! Here's a couple of books that blew my mind:
    1. "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk" by Adele Faber/Elaine Mazlish - talks about why kids have temper tantrums and how to effectively diffuse them (I was curious about the psychology of why kids act out and/or shut down). By reading this, I started to understand why some adults can't seem to control their anger/frustrations also.
    * "No Drama Discipline" by Daniel J. Siegel/Tina Payne Bryson goes more into how to diffuse a child's temper tantrum, but some of it can be applied with adults also *
    2. "The Lost Art of Listening" by Michael P. Nichols/Martha B Straus - all about effective communication. It was very insightful in seeing what people (not excluding myself) do in conversation that can cause disconnection
    3. "Atomic Habits" by James Clear - helpful for procrastination
I've also partially read "The Life and Crimes of Richard Ramirez the Night Stalker" by Philip Carlo because I'm fascinated by serial killers, how they became who they are, and why they do what they do even though I will probably NEVER truly understand them 😅

Sure they can. If you sometimes struggle with depression, and overwhelm, and think you still can sustain really strong medicin: try to read "Man's Search for Meaning", by Viktor Frankl, it is profound, but I had to cry and read and cry and feel very shaken. But I hope you can do it, it is like a light at the end of the tunnel - but you must read to the end, or just the end, or else you might get traumatized only. Don't read it at all if you are very sensitive, but then read something truly uplifting, like daily pages by Sarah Ban Breathnach: "Simple Abundance, A Daybook of Comfort and Joy."
Maybe you'll love the author that shines through, just like I do - I have read it many times and bought several copies as gifts to others, and my sister and I developed a special bond around this book!
All the best wishes - healing is on its way to you, open your arms and your heart, but for good influences only!

We can read great books and pay attention to the news. Tim the laws changing will affect many many women and men negatively, we can be calm and yet be aware of what is happening in the world right now. I'm all about positivity and mindset but laws do matter and affect live and death even if not our own. Perhaps you know the famous quote, I'll paraphrase: "First they came for the ___, but I wasn't one so I said nothing, then they came for___...and still I said nothing. when they came for me, there was no one to stand up for me."
We need islands of positivity and uplift but that doesn't mean ignoring reality, especially when it is TRULY traumatic for many. I know you can silent ban comments, as a TH-camr that is a right we have. But I hope you will leave my comment, but if not ok.

We need to shut down the energy-thieves that endlessly chatter on in our minds, so that we have some power of mind, to take action and to speak out, when it really matters. As an introvert, I really need to fill up on good energy, and so books, nature, my style of music, are very helpful for me.

At first be a minimalist in your mindset, most and foremost, and see in a year or so, if you'll find a solution to the health-care and retirement plan. In your age it is prudent to have some plan, so that you don't become so dependent on others. (I'm 70+ now.) When you practice getting by on say less than 2 dollars a day, then the horizon of possibilities change by and by. Learn skills to make it pleasant. Take it step by minmal step and you can do it.

Excellent list of books to read! I have ready about half of these, and a favorite is difficult to choose however if I had to pick one it would be Walden. I have seen videos and read the blog of The Man Who Quit Money, Daniel Suelo, but haven't read the book yet. I am saving the rest of the books on this list to read soon! I am in the middle of re-reading The Untethered Soul, and read Letting go just a few months ago actually. Great idea on the audio versions for the stoic books. When I read Meditations, I must have picked up a poorly translated version because it didn't fully make sense.
Some additional books I really enjoy are: 'Early Retirement Extreme' by Jacob Lund Fisker, 'Antifragile' by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurelius, 'Your Money or Your Life' by Vicki Robin.

I'm very excited about the N. American book. I have always been fascinated by their "way of life". As a Buddhist I hope to read Letting Go & Tethered Soul. My boss a very long time ago sent me to a Dale Carnegie workshop...he use to say, "stop worrying they can't eat you"...My favorites are: The Tibetan Book of the Living and Dying, The Four Noble Truths. Animal Liberation by Peter Singer...changed my life.

Great list! Thank you! I read Man's Search for Meaning when I was really young and it was a gift that I treasure till this day. I'll like to provide a list of books I've found to be profound. Mindset by Carol s. Dweck, A Course In Miracles, Thick Face, Black Heart by Chin-Ning Chu, Ikigai by Hector Garcia, Happy Money by Ken Honda, Meet Your Strawman(it's an eye opener from the first page). Building Social Business by Muhammad Yunus, Give Work by Leila Janah.

I'm so happy I've never heard of most of these books! I was already planning on going to a bookstore and splurging just a little bit ( those books ADD UP! HAHA) and now...i'm a little scared..because my list is even longer! I think i'm going to start with How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie as I've a read a few of us his books (or maybe just 1??) and Man's Search For Meaning! That sounds very powerful!

    Ok
    Thats it!
That book " letting go" I've been seeing everywhere lately. Time to pick it up.
The untethered soul was my first book that started everything for me and blew my mind.
If I can suggest and share i would definitely suggest anything by Jon Kabat Zinn.....but first I would youtube him and get his tone of voice soaked into your head....then read.
    1. where ever you go there you are
    2. full catastrophe living
    3 coming to our senses
These are 3 good ones that I just started reading but he has 60! Books in print.
Again.....getting his voice in your head first I think it is key because it slows down your reading allowing you absorb the content on a deeper level.
Thanks Tim.....I'll definitely check out some of your choices 🙏
Oh yeah and I can't forget the BIG RED BOOK(ACA)
even if you don't come from an alcoholic family ( i do) it will help you greatly with dysfunctional families.
I started it in the winter and had to put it down for the summer because it was too heavy for me.....and its a book that you don't just read through......there's ALOT of work to be done in thoes pages (a lifetime)
One of the things that the book suggests is having a regular meditation practice and that was one thing that I was missing. Finding Jon Kabat Zinn and actually relating to him rather than reading somebody's mumbo jumbo on the subject was key for me. I know I can trust what I'm reading because he has dedicated his life to his work.
So hopefully I'll have a little foundation of mindfulness to start the BRB again in the winter.
And Tim.....if the big red book isn't in your possession .
    Now is the time!

Depending on how you orientate to such things, there's a thread of "new age" thinking throughout Letting Go. I was once immersed in that world. In recent years I've stepped back from it. It's there if you want it, but easy enough to ignore and let go of if you don't. Also, the author refuses to refer to himself in the first person until literally the past two pages of the book, which makes the reading of the book far more obtuse than it needs to be.
Again, the first one is pretty easy to ignore if new age isn't your thing, as it stays mostly in the background and isn't vital to the bigger lesson being taught. The second one (no use of first-person pronouns by the author), while annoying in spots, is easy enough to overlook, and he only references himself occasionally, so this issue isn't constant.
With all that said, I'm in my early 50's, and have been immersed in the personal development world since my teens (35+ years). I've read more "self-help" books than you could possibly imagine, and Letting Go is easily the single most profound, life-altering book I've ever read. The ability to surrender and let go of any given situation is a genuine superpower here on earth - no Marvel characters needed. ;)
