The Caterpillar 3516 is an unusual engine design. The traditional V16 design is a 45-degree angle between the banks and a two-plane crankshaft. That arrangement gives even firing intervals of 45 degrees. The C175 is a 90-degree V16 with a four-plane crankshaft. That also gives even firing intervals of 45 degrees. The 3516 however, is a 60-degree V16 with uneven firing intervals. The Caterpillar 3500 series are terrific engines with a long history of reliable service.
