    This was a brilliant demonstration of solar installation. I have always been wary, though curious at the same time, about fitting solar charging systems. Thank you so much, brilliant video 🙏

    The real test here is when you run into the van and look where the drill came through.... that's a make or break moment! For me that would take at least 2 cups of tea and 20 (re)measurements before drilling. Great video, very informative and well made.

    Hi Jason, I watch all your vids but this is my first comment!! That was the most clear video of fitting a solar system I have seen!! You took the mystery out of it and I can see exactly how to do it myself! I don’t have a van yet, but am getting one next summer (saving up) and definitely want solar! You have given me the confidence to do it myself now!!great vid, keep up the good work!!👍

    Great informative video that will have helped a lot of people. Just one observation, the first connection should be from the battery terminal to the charge controller, after that it is safe to connect the solar panel to the charge controller. Connecting the solar panel to the charge controller before the battery can damage the controller.

    Hi Jason....I was measuring up my Motorhome for solar panels over the weekend when I got a bit of a shock, the rear part of the roof seemed like it had come away from the main structure, although all the edges and skylights were all sealed which concerned me just a bit.
    Someone mentioned to me that this is normal and is called a floating roof. Can you confirm this is true or not as I know you have had dealings with many Motorhomes?

  • @avocado71

    OK, a few issues here. The cables going to the solar controller need securing, they could easily be pulled out as they are. Secondly there is exposed cable core at the connections, the cable should be stripped to just the right length to prevent this. Apart from that, not too bad! Oh and thicker cable to reduce voltage drop.

    Hope you don't mind me asking 4 questions: 1) Bearing in mind that, from what I can see, if the TV aerial is moved, it could shade the panel and cause it to stop working efficiently, is that really the best place to put it? 2) Why have you put ducting on the inside of the van? Does that look good? 3) Why have you run the cable the whole length of the van when you could have droppped it in by the panel? That would have looked a lot better and reduced voltage drop. 4) Why have you used a PWM regulator and not an MPPT model? Purely because of the cost difference? Serious questions and serious answers would be appreciated.

      Hi Andy the solar is effective with out sun light and yes you can argue the case.We put trunking inside to hide the wires.If we dropped in by the panel we would of have to run the wires all through the motorhome anyway.We used the particular controller because that is what Kevin wanted and he did not want anything fancy.

  • @radiofanuk

    My solar panel goes to the control module and is sent to batteries from there. I would have also used hellerman sleeving and ferrels on the ends of the cables.. Good video

    Great video Jason, just taken delivery of my Ci Carioca 706 yesterday and trying to work out how a solar panel would go. Batteries under drivers seat and in passenger foot well. Would it be a tricky job? Think I will have to let someone else undertake the job for me..

    No need to buy and install a new solar control unit. That Autotrail model (like mine) and other Autotrails, has a solar charge controller already installed inside the main control unit. You simply connect the pos & neg wires from the solar panel to this unit. Also you don't have to take pos & neg wires to the leisure and vehicle batteries, the van's main unit supplies the solar charge to both batteries, depending which battery has the lowest charge.

    How much will it cost me to put solar panels on the roof of my motor home? It will be 200Volts solar panel, Bluetooth converter, 15 amp and a leisure battery to install.

    Helpful informative video...but...terrible placement of the panel! When raised, the TV aerial will cast a shadow over the panel for much of the day reducing its output to virtually zero. I'd have put it on the opposite side and used thicker cable to negate any voitage loss over the longer cable run.

    • @TheMotorhomeMan
      @TheMotorhomeMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need sun just light.Kevin stores is undercover and it is still working with the light.

    • @WoollyWanderers
      @WoollyWanderers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMotorhomeMan But you get less light in the shade than you do in the open! I know from experience when parked underneath a tree or even a lamp post which casts shade over even just one panel my output drops significantly.
      I suppose as an experiment you could raise the tv antenna and see what happens when you rotate it such that it casts a shadow over the panel.
      Anyway I won't labour the point, enjoyed and "liked" the video thanks :)
