  • A look at services at Carpenders Park on the southern end of the West Coast Main Line. Lots of Pendolinos and Voyagers at speed, LM 350s, Southern 377s and TfL 378s. Plus some freight and a little surprise.

    Excellent as always, thanks. BTW is that Suggs doing the engineering announcement at 1:35?

      Hi Mike. Either him or his brother. That announcement was also much quieter than the regular ones but it was repeated several times before each local service

    Enjoyed the video but any chance can make the captions larger/ clearer. Good selection of workings.

      Hi Heather. Getting the balance right for captions is a bit of a balancing act. I need to avoid obscuring too much of the picture and the font grows with screen size. I tried larger but it was too much on a larger screen. Clarity is difficult because of the ever changing background. I experimented with various colours and borders none of which could cope perfectly. The blue with a white border gives the most consistent contrast with the background that I could find. Time on screen is also an issue. I sometimes have too much to say but don't want the presence of a caption to interfere with the underlying video. I have settled on a minimum 7.5 seconds for a single line caption with 2 line captions increased by 2 seconds if there is enough time in the clip. I now try to avoid three line captions by splitting them. If I can't I try to increase the time.

    Can you do Swindon? There are lots of facts about it. And there is also a siding for freight at the start of platform 4. And a tesco a a bc yard too

    I can recommend the tall footbridge between Kenton and the Met/Chiltern line overbridge for some interesting shots.

      Thanks Peter. I noticed that there is also an overbridge just south of Carpenders Park but I didn't fancy the walk when I was there. I do find overbridges a problem when filming as the overhead equipment tends to obscure the view. Many newer bridges are also too high to see over.

    I will have to watch again on the computer as after texting you I did have brainwave of turning mobile on the side which helped. Thanks for understanding that I was trying to give helpful criticism but except your explanation.

    Excellent videography !
    I hope that I'm not bothering you with too many detailed questions. If so, then ignore them.
    - Why is that ratty looking 4th rail still there ? Why don't they send it to the scrapper ?
    - Are you able to do the Southern 'East Croydon to Milton Keynes' as a cab video ?? And a stopover to show the transfer from 3rd rail to pantograph ? I don't think that I've ever video ridden that route before.
    Sorry to bother you, Aarre Peltomaa

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Aarre. Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been having some minor medical treatment. The fourth rail remains in place to provide better earth bonding.
      With regard to cab rides, I am not in a position to arrange that. The view forward is only available to crew in the front cab and the days of being able to blag a cab ride are long gone. The change over point is just north of Shepherds Bush station. I think my video of that section of the West London Line might cover it.

      Hi Jo. Lied is a very emotive word implying deliberate deception. The Bombardier website will give you up to date information on the Aventra order book.

    The new repaint for some of the virgin trains is horrible they've just slapped an Azuma livery on the side which doesn't work with the shape of the train at all!
    Anyway, good video keep up the good work, I always love watching your videos

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Harvey. From what I hear Virgin had very little choice over the new livery. The leasing company that owns the Pendolinos wanted them repainted and also wanted to take into account the possibility that Virgin will not retain the franchise. Consequently the new livery is as plain as they could get away with. Virgin managed to get their branding on to the end cars but that is about it.

    The middle 4th rail is so much in bad shape

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. The fourth rail has not been in use since the Bakerloo line stopped running beyond Harrow & Wealdstone in about 1982. The electrification was converted to third rail in the seventies but the fourth rail had to be kept to give the tube stock an earth path as they do not use their wheels for this. This was done by connecting the fourth rail to the running rails. Looking at another video by TurboFintan the fourth rail looks in usable condition in June 2015 which seems rather bizarre. Perhaps they are getting ready to recover it. Presumably it has some value or might be reusable somewhere on the third rail network.

    what does "under the wire" refer to when talking about the Virgin Voyager?

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul. The West Coast main line to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester, including the loop from Rugby to Stafford via Birmingham is all electrified at 25Kv using overhead wires. Consequently trains on these routes are often referred to as 'running under the wires'. The point of my comment about the Voyager from Glasgow is that it uses electricity to drive the traction
      motors but uses diesel engines to generate that electricity as they were built without the capability to collect current from the overhead wires. Over the years there have been suggestions about building additional carriages with pantographs so that they could become bi-modes similar to the IEP. Previous attempts have failed because Bombardier, the original builder, was either not interested or wanted too much for the job or just no longer had the capability. Most recently this was advocated in Modern Railways by Ian Walmsley who suggests that a different manufacturer may be able to do the job. The Wikipedia page about the Voyager has some information.

      Thanks for your very comprehensive reply ~:-)
      From what you have said, am i to assume that Voyagers are not as 'green' nor economic than fully electrified trains? Also I think I have heard that Pendolino's at 'full speed' actually put electricity i.e generate it back to the wire?

      p.s. I should know all this having grown up in Crewe

    • @BoogiesTrains
      @BoogiesTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The advantage of an electric train is that you don't need to waste energy on dragging the weight of engines and fuel around. Against that saving you have to consider the cost of the infrastructure. Consequently electrification only makes sense for heavily used lines with captive services. The solution to going beyond the wires used to be to change the engine. Glasgow trains changed from electric to diesel at Crewe until 1974. That solution doesn't work so well with multiple units. Pendolinos used to be dragged from Crewe to Chester by class 57s. The bi-mode compromise is in many ways the engineers worst nightmare. You have the expense of electrifying the line and you still drag the diesel engine and fuel along. The passenger doesn't care as long as the train is on time and not too expensive. There is also the complexity of switching from electric to diesel mid journey. An IET famously refused to go electric at Maidenhead on day one and my film of Paddington later that week shows an IET arriving on diesel. Might as well have been a Voyager or an Adelante as far as the passenger is concerned.
      Not sure if the Pendolinos have regenerative braking. It certainly exists on some stock. I believe the DC class 76s had it. This is where the electric motors act as generators when braking is required instead of wasting energy as heat by using friction brakes.
