Hard luck has taught me, as an IT guy, that there is no such thing as too many belts and suspenders with regards to data. A fire or a break in could take out your data storage completely right now.

Me too. I use adobe Bridge to keyword videos and groups of photos and years later surprised when i filter in it what I found I completely forgot about.

Casey, I like the way you organize your footage. It's a very smart and organized system. If you know what you want and where to fine it, it's very easy to get to it. I do almost the same thing with my school work. I separate it by school year, semester, individual class, and then type of project like "essays", "presentations", etc.
I'm fascinated by everything you do. I'm disabled, at home, usually in bed....all day long. Soooo I love watching people doing their thing and the things they do (no nasty things). So, please keep on doing what you do...it allows people like me to live thru you vicariously. Personally I started watching you because you were a good role model and a successful person to emulate, hence I choose you for a source of entertainment as a way to virtually surround myself with people I would like to draw inspiration and knowledge from. You being one of the many youtube channels I watch. So seeing how your brain functions and how you organize things, or how you set up shots, or just anything that involves how Casey Neistat performs a certain action (rather than just seeing the action itself) is empowering to say the least. If anything it can bring confidence to people who are overwhelmed with the quality and true magic that comes out of your vlogs each day, but when its explained, it shows that its all just tons of small steps, practice, organization, experience, and a SHIT load of hard work that go into the videos. So please keep sharing HOW you do things. Anything. because although I can't speak for everybody in the youtube community, for me, learning how someone does something, is just another way for me to connect to their thinking process, dissect it, and hopefully adopt parts of it for my benefit, and in turn pass on my own processes for my fans, children, youngers, students, or whatever. How do you find stuff topically that's more obscure...like say you wanted to cut in footage of like a montage of all the beaches you've seen or every airplane seat you sat in or something like that? Do you tag your footage?
Do you use FCPX? Do you keep duplicate footage in the FCPX file as well as your footage system? I don't have a ton of space, but I've definitely lightened the load by not keeping footage separately from the FCPX files. Very curious about what others do with huge bulky FCPX files

easiest investment ever... If I was casey I would've bought it without a second thought. Puts 7k in you get at least 100k back and now companies that make hard drives know that casey is interested in them and are more than likely to send him a free one in order to get free promotion.
TigerBait2780 not trying to use buzzwords, you can actually keyword each video once you import them and you this metadata to organize your shots. I do this for music videos. At import, you separate all scenes, styles of shots, slow motion or not etc into keywords, then you can use the search to find whatever that is in your library. Specific enough?
People ask how to organize because you're inadvertently *teaching* folks how to both vlog, edit and organize. Nothing better than spreading the knowledge you've attained/created with those that're truly interested.
With an access pattern like that, why are you even using hard drives? You can get a 2TB LTO tape cartage for like 20USD, so long as you don't mind the expensive reader. That's how most companies do their backups and you can easily make copies to send to off-site storage. Plus they tend to be more durable than HDDs.

I have a similar system though I've been keeping different folders for DSLR vs. Point and shoot. Now I think I will merge them under the day/month. So... I learned something from it. Thanks!

I hope that footage is backed up. Kind of scary to have these massive hard drives without any duplicate archival.
Regarding storage and organizing... how do you know the exact date of your videos you want to reference to? Like even if you know the event happened somewhere around October 2014 it would still require a butt load of searching to find the exact day and footage....

Royal Frog well basically since he looks at a lot of small screens hes always focused on a short distance. But since he does a lot of other things and wears sunglasses it might bot affect him.

easiest investment ever... If I was casey I would've bought it without a second thought. Puts 7k in you get at least 100k back and now companies that make hard drives know that casey is interested in them and are more than likely to send him a free one in order to get free promotion.

TigerBait2780 not trying to use buzzwords, you can actually keyword each video once you import them and you this metadata to organize your shots. I do this for music videos. At import, you separate all scenes, styles of shots, slow motion or not etc into keywords, then you can use the search to find whatever that is in your library. Specific enough?

With an access pattern like that, why are you even using hard drives? You can get a 2TB LTO tape cartage for like 20USD, so long as you don't mind the expensive reader. That's how most companies do their backups and you can easily make copies to send to off-site storage. Plus they tend to be more durable than HDDs.

Thank you for explaining your footage storage system. You said it seems boring, but organization is REALLY important. I have a similar system though I've been keeping different folders for DSLR vs. Point and shoot. Now I think I will merge them under the day/month. So... I learned something from it. Thanks!
