Great observation about the backgrounds being brighter than the subject. It helps create a realistic sense of depth and it's used a lot in cinematography for this exact reason.
Hi Nigel, thanks for sharing! Ah, I wasn't aware this was also a tool for cinematographers too. Bright backgrounds near the edge of a frame is something a darkroom teacher might slap one's hand over, so I found it interesting that Steimetz does this.
@@ThePhotobookReview Very true. And when you try to shoot just one single picture like his portraits you realize how difficult and special it is. Great channel, thank you.
Thanks so much for this great perusal! Steinmetz's books are ones that I will come back to again and again and never get tired of them or read them in the same way. Pretty much the only photographer whose books I will buy before seeing any of the spreads or watching a flip through. Love your commentary starting at 16:55-"conceptual juxtaposition of ambiguity and mystery and clarity and sincerity."
Why thank you Joseph! I agree, any book by Steinmetz is a pretty safe purchase and stays interesting as time passes. I love his body of work called "Little League Baseball."
That's very gracious of you to say Charlotte, thank you! I'm very happy to hear that the videos go you interested in photography. Steinmetz is a great way to get hooked. Do you have a favorite photographer from the one's I've covered so far?
Hi Juan! Yes, that's a great observation and take-away from these photographs, and one I hadn't considered. They could also be indicative of an itinerant lifestyle too.
i like the last sentence "between ambiguity and mystery, and sincerity and clarity"
Oh, thank you! That sentence came to me as I was trying to convey the genuine positive emotions in Steinmetz work.
Thank you! Nice walkthrough.

Damn, I'm buying so many of these books featured in your reviews. Thank you!
There's so many good photobooks out there it can get expensive, hah.
Wonderful. His work is so perfect and incredibly consistent.
I agree, he's been consistent across a few decades and the way he speaks about his work is inspiring.

Thank you Kory! I appreciate the encouragement
Payphones are also telling of social standing: people that cannot afford phone bills or the space needed to have a private conversation at home.
