  • If you are runner with a metatarsal stress fracture, you can simply stop running and wait for the bone to heal. The other option is to figure out how to heal it faster and keep running while the stress fracture is still healing. If you do that, you can get back to running a lot faster!
    The process for healing and getting back to running is not that complicated.
    This video by Dr. Christopher Segler talks about the 12 Steps to healing and running with a metatarsal stress fracture.

    Suffered a traumatic 5th metatarsal mid-shaft fracture on 8/22 (nearly broke off but fortunately didn’t). Immediately saw a podiatrist who managed me thru the injury including x-rays over (now) 12+ wks. I’ve been able to ease back into treadmill running over the last 2 wks (weeks 10-12 of my recovery), and can feel my tolerance level getting stronger by the day! Today I’m going on my first planned outdoor run since the injury. Still feeling a bit tender at times but I appreciate the advice of accelerating the healing by not allowing your foot to become idle while in the recovery stages. “Listening” to your body is absolutely crucial.

    Hey! Thank you very much for this video. Well descriptive and helpful. I'd appreciate it if you could share your thoughts or experiences with the post traumatic recovery process. I've fractured my 5th matatarsal 2 years ago, my recovery was a fixed cast for 6 weeks, followed by 4 weeks physiotherapist.
    The fractured bone was healed and check up followed after 6 months 1 year, all seemed ok and pediatrician said all is well. However, I suffer from constant daily discomfort in the area ever since full recovery. This discomfort begins when I stand for a while on my feet, or when I walk for a while, or if I keep my shoes on an entire day at work.
    Could you please share your thoughts on how did you deal with post traumatic pain?
    Thank you very much.
    Ps. the doctor's opinion was to pursue more physiotherapy. I believe that would be useless.

    I am loving this video because I just found out I have a 1st metatarsal Greenstick fracture, I did NOT think it was broken. I am at a loss of how to proceed- it feels OK, my Dr (ok, she's a Naturopath) said it wasn't broken, but my Vet x rayed and the Greenstick is obvious. How long do I need to wear a boot and when can I ride the horses again? How much immobility do I need vs how much comfortable movement is OK? Hmmmm.....

      Glad you enjoyed the video! Unfortunately I can't give medical advice without knowing your history, the details of the injury, etc, but we could do all of that during a web cam visit. However, you should be able easily make those decisions on your tone with the help of the Metatarsal Stress Fracture Course. This was what I wanted to hear... I am just wondering whether it is what I need to hear? I guess I certainly should not run the first weeks into recovery, right? And slowly try and see what feels good? (Though sure as a runner I know how to push through pain...) Clarification welcome!

      Hello Loveleen, Sorry you having trouble. 5 months ia a LONGGGG TIME! Unfortunately I can't really comment with knowing more detail. You may find more info in other videos, but the faster way to a full explanation would be to schedule a call to figure out the true cause, and what to do.www.docontherun.com/talk-to-the-expert/ You might also check out the Metatarsal Stress Fracture Course

      When you can walk after broken metatarsal surgery depends upon 1) the type of fractures 2) the type of surgery performed 3) the treatment following the surgery, before you start walking. When did your surgeon say you should be able to walk?

    • @DocOnTheRun
      @DocOnTheRun  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bahubalisinghsangam8830 According to published research the time ranges from 4 weeks to 52 week. The specific rate of healing can vary greatly depending upon 1) the type of fractures 2) the type of surgery performed 3) the treatment following the surgery, before you start walking. I would have to assume your surgeon considered those three variables when predicting how long it would be before you heal after your surgery. When did your surgeon say you should be able to walk?

      I have no idea based on that amount of information. It all depends upon your specific injury, treatment timeline, response to treatments thus far, your nutrition, sleep patterns and the actions you are taking to maintain your running fitness while you heal.
