    While your talking to the Suzuki dealer, enquirer about the little tool that bolts to those wee holes next to the cam caps and presses the bucket down allowing you to pull the shims with a magnet without pulling the cams out. It makes it a 5 minute job to change a shim.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one for my Yamaha, as far as I was aware there isn’t any for the GS?

    • @maxpower363

      Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions Your right, it was the Yamaha one I was thinking of, I last used it on an xjr 1300. The Suzuki one looks like a c-spanner and hooks under the cam, with the edge of the tool catching the bucket. They used to be $40 or so from the dealer years ago. They probably don't sell them any more, maybe the inter webs has them?

    Same here mate, i've always used magnets when i am doing shims, i just take them out and take them off, just dont let the shim sit on the magnet for hours. all good mate, she's getting there now.

    Hi sir.
    I think uve got small mistake regarding timing chain.
    Which u spent time to place it.
    U most fix ex shoft first and put chain on it then fix inlet shoft . In this method rest of the chain will be exactly front of tensioner and after release tensioner chain will be in exact position.
    Thanks

    Back when I used to have Kawa big zed's (Z1B, Z1000A1, Z1100B2) I always hated doing anything that meant taking the cams out. It was way too easy to strip out those damn cam cap bolts.
    I don't know if Suzi's are the same but putting a bikini fairing on an 80's Z always lead to tank slappers at speed.

    Last time I did valve clearances, the shims live under the bucket. Cams in, Cams out, Cams in, Cams out, Cams in arrrgh.
    What I'd have given to have a little tool to remove the shims.

  • @AuMechanic

    Andy I have to say this and I hope you don't take it the wrong away but you really do need to start reading the service manuals to get the procedure sorted first.
    Everything has a specific procedure in mechanics and while 99% of the time you can figure it out yourself sometimes it is not just a matter of it taking longer due to having to back track (I've seen you do a few times now), in same cases not following the specific procedure can leave you in a world of trouble.
    Everyone needs the stinkin manual

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know 😕 In my defense the manual never actually indicated that the camshaft needed to be bolted down when checking the position, in fact the accompanying photo shows it sans cam bearing caps.

    • @AuMechanic
      @AuMechanic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ANDY5
      It should show that.
      Is that an OEM Suzi manual ?
      BTW
      Usually when removing the head I'd do the shims with the head off and each cam bolted in one at a time.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it’s a factory manual, but it’s a PDF and the photos are terrible. I’ll have a closer look. I’ve done them on the bench before but I’ve had situations where they change when they are fitted to the vehicle (I have mostly worked on cars in this manner, predominantly shim under bucket Jags etc) Have you had to revisit them after the head has been fitted and torqued back down? It certainly would be a lot easier that way if you haven’t had to re do them.

    • @AuMechanic
      @AuMechanic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ANDY5
      Not had them change off the bench.
      So long as they are measured on the same point of the lobe on and off the engine, by that i mean if you set them to be right at 180 to the lobe on the bench and then measured them again on the engine at TDC firing the clearance may change due to cam journal clearances.

    The cams have timing marks on the ends too notch and line, they always cant up a couple of degrees then tighten correct when you do up the cam caps makes it easier to set up rather than using the marks on the cam sprocket ;)

    Why are you rotating in clockwise direction? This engine runs counterclockwise. Turning the engine clockwise with the tensioner off risks causing the cam chain to jump.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clockwise from where I was standing. All timing marks are on the right hand side of the engine

  • @stevenhoman2253

    Have you ever owned/ridden/worked on a two stroke? Apart from the lovely odour, they are so simple. This four stroke lark is a major pain in the arse it seems to me. The lighting looks great and I'm sure makes working on anything just that much easier.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, many. All dirt bike though. My last dinger was a 2009 Husqvarna WR300

    • @catzepplin
      @catzepplin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ANDY5 You simply cannot beat 4 stroke grunt coming out of a slow corner. Whereas you have to let a 2 stroke wind up to get to where the HP is, A four stroke will pull you into where HP takes over. Remember, HP keeps you there, but torque GETS you there. Now, having said all that...Im stating from experience back in the late 70s early 80s with the 1 liter bikes vs the Kawasaki triples.

    Was the “screw and lock nut” system sooo inferior? Would love a quick explanation of why shim and buckets are better.

    • @LinkinMcOwnage
      @LinkinMcOwnage 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In short, friction, and all the mass of those rockers

    • @paultanton4307
      @paultanton4307 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting to note that many current Sportsbike Engines use Cam Followers/Fingers of some sort,so probably a refinement of the Two.

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RPM’s dictated the change. And if higher RPMs are required then shim under bucket is the go. As noted in the other replies here some have applied a combination of both. You have the advantage of lever ratios and modern materials like titanium have reduced the mass compared to the old cast iron ones

  • @elantraboy

    Andy just wondering if the lights made life a bit easier to see as you certainly were well lit on the video compared to previous videos? I noticed a difference when you were showing the area under the cams when attempting to insert the feeler gauges under the cams seemed very clear compared to saturday's video. Main question is did they make it easier to you to see and was setting them up a pain in the ass or worth the effort?

    • @ANDY5
      @ANDY5  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Big difference Ken. It really isn’t a big hassle to deal with, they take seconds to setup. You just have to consider camera placement a little more. Very happy mate.
