      @@kamdenmadan3289heck I found the noble centric theocracy of Begnion a pretty interesting take on a nation's political structure. The European middle age monarch of Evil or Good is really played out in F.E.

    Personally, my wishlist would be (in order):
    1) Minimise the amount of chores to do at the base. It ruins all semblance of story pacing.
    2) Make the PC less important. Robin's advisor role was practically perfect for this. Likewise, have allies distrust/ abandon the PC.
    3) Just straight up steal the support system from Andaron Saga. Having characters learn skills from each other was awesome, but the limited support conversations was a downer.
    4) Actual worldbuilding / lore please?

    • @paulman34340
      @paulman34340 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1. Agree, I feel they need to give you the OPTION of a menu like in POR/RD or exploring the "My Base" function.
      2. What do you mean by the "Abandon" the PC part. But I will agree that the PC DOES need to be more GROUNDED and EARN the respect that makes them the Hero! Still remember how Shinon and Gatrie abandoned the Mercenaries after Greil dies do to disagreeing with Titiana's decision to make Ike (who by the way has only been an active member for a short while! Even shorter then Boyd who only became active a week or so before him by the way) leader. And Ike was not upset about their action as even HE agreed with their thoughts that he was still the "new guy" to be placed as leader like that! In the end he had to EARN their respect! Saving Gatre ass a few chapters later and beating Shinon's ass likely how Greil did which earned his respect in coming back (though Rolf has to bring UP the possibility of Shinon "entertaining" Ike making their fight a DUEL to win him back first) and now I see what you mean by "abandon!" You'd have to be careful with that as it has to be in a REASONABLE territory to avoid "karma Houdini" for deserting! And it must not be ANNOYING (Still was annoyed how long it took for Shinon to come back on my first playthrough back when POR first came out that I STUCK with Rolf all the way even AFTER he returned! Gatrie at least returns sooner that you can REASONABLY feel like you can bench or have him TAG TEAM with Brom! Though Brom got abit more favor due to JUST replacing Gatrie after he left!)
      3. Hmm, as Slice of Life feeling as Engage's supports were which were interesting. I feel they do need to go back to character developing! Would be interesting if A+/S rank is used in the manner you just described (skills and such) since I never liked that for the case of "Partner Seals" (Just keep it Second Seals from now on! I don't want to grind Support HEAVILY just to make my "Mozu" a Spear Fighter)
      4. I agree, but hope they don't take the Worldbuilding outcry as "HUGE ASS EXPOSITIONS" for info that will NOT be majorly relevant moving the story forward! Nice local Lore and past history's that become relevent to the Current Age Story would be good! Tv Tropes put forward the Archetype of the "Past Legends" usually being PARTIALLY or COMPLETELY responsible for the shit that effects the current age the story takes place in! Such as using the BIGGEST example. Three Houses and the Ten Elites & Nemesis who are treated as legends who fell from grace like & unlike the Seven Heroes from the Elibe (Binding Blade & Blazing Sword) but the difference is they were NEVER heroes at all. But Bandit Lords who were RIGHTFULLY taken down by the Saints and Seiros! Meaning the problems of the Future are largely Seiros doing...or specifically RHEA's who refuses to let go or veer too far off course when she feels she's SOO CLOSE to bringing her mother back...and founded everything off of LIES (hence why the Three Lords and their future plans to replace the system are NEEDED! Bad or Good, everything in Three Houses Lore and from Supports of certain characters like Hanneman and even Sylvain make it clear something has to give/change) even for once the emperor option (as the Emperor characters have ALWAYS been foils to the Lords in the series in wanting to change the system for the better too! Even if their extreme and sometimes "go too far" with it...and Ashnard's case WAY too far!)
      5. As much as I enjoyed Three Houses gameplay. Engage reminded me of why I liked the classic "Base Class to Promoted Advanced Class" system of old! Just no more Resetting levels! Fates did that whole leveling and class changing RIGHT in my opinion (This means no more TRYING to force a "Post Game" Unless you're willing to GRIND Eternal Seals which need to make a comeback....and no Partner/Friend Seals!). I will say I WOULD like Weapon Leveling back! But make it SIMPLER then how Fates went INSANE with how much you have to
      6. MIX the whole "Breakable & Unbreakable" weapons abit! Such as certain Personal weapons and Legendaries don't break (or they aren't a BITCH to repair) but Legendaries cannot be upgraded (since they likely come Late and really don't need upgrades, BUFF THOSE WEAPONS STATS LOL!) but Personals can and there's some GOOD rewards for buffing Personal's to Max +5 to make the effort worth it then just powering it up! Weapon Levels SHOULD boost the starting levels of NEW Weapon's if you switch to a class that doesn't use the weapon you were leveling up, but a different one! Like get Axes to B rank, but switch to a class that doesn't use Axes! But Lances! Then you'll start with D or C rank in Lances! Base Classes cannot go past B rank! But any extra WEXP that is gained is KEPT in reserve till you promote to a class that still uses the weapon, but brings it to A-S rank (I took this from Bravely Default 2 where the Jobs max at Level 12 till you get late game and complete special battles, then they can go to Level 15, but the game KEEPS track of any JP you gathered while in those classes when you reached Level 12 so they'll be applied once those final three Levels are unlocked. Saving time and making it WORTH IT to stick in those Jobs after maxing them before that point as they unlock a SECOND passive "Specialty" when you hit Level 12)
      7. Make sure EVERY character is in ALL the classes! IT felt SILLY that Lapis felt like she should have been a Spear Fighter, but was made a Sword Fighter when Diamant was only ONE CHAPTER AWAY! Hell I complained also that Amber should have been a Sword Cavalier too! At that point, you really WANT more NATURAL sword users as the game pretty much forced Alear to be you're LONGEST running sword user till the start of the Brodia chapters which was annoying (should have also made Chloe a Sword Flier...too many Spear Users in my opinion! Yeah Celine is a Sword wielder, but are you REALLY counting on her to make use of a sword NOT the Levin Sword well! Hard and Above Axe wielders she MIGHT have had some advantage against start tanking her hits, and I found I needed a +5 Slim sword with a good engraving for her to even BE very threatening to Magic Users!)

    Couldn't agree more on terrain and weapon triangle, Particularly terrain. Give us lots of terrain with different effects, engage was close to this idea with terrain altering effects but I want them to just exist on the map ahead of time.
    If there's one thing I'd love to see its optional map objectives, I know this sort of exists already with villages but give us out of the way optional tough units to beat, beat map in X amount of turns etc. Present it to us as a bulletpointed list or something at the start of a map with some kind of bonus for reaching these goals. Perhaps even make it very difficult to get them all so that the player has to choose which reward is most worth their time if at all.
    Finally I have a sort of controversial one, unlimited use items. Have things like elixirs be unlockable permanent items that have a limited use per map. So say you get a 1 use elixir that if you use it, it refreshes next map. Make these items limited in uses but very powerful, this means you will actually use them strategically each map instead of hoarding as there is no threat of potentially needing them in a later map. These items can range from healing, to buffs or debuffs. Fell seal arbiters mark does this with its consumables and I find it to be a very enjoyable system.

      @leveldown8743 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The Tellius games did this, since you would get bonus experience based on your performance on the map, which included optional goals. The problem was that these objectives were invisible and you often only got notified of them if you managed to achieve them.

    A separation between Support Conversations and Base Conversations like in the Tellius games. Base convos were so good for worldbuilding and occaisionally items,. They arguably did support conversations better because you could have more than two partcipants as well.
    I'd like to a see a more ambitious attempt at map design using height as a factor, like archers get a range boost from climbing a tower.
    My major gripe with the hub worlds is that they're designed to accommodate being anywhere in the story, so you get these weird undisclosed location achieved through limited teleportation. So I'd prefer if it just took place inside a tent like Triangle Strategy, much smaller space to cover and you can still talk to relevant NPCs to initiate meals, mini games, and whatever else they want to do.

  • @windmage0168
    @windmage0168 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    Before I begin watching the video, I'm going to list the top 6 features I would want and compare later.
    1. Fates Dual Strike/Pair-Up: Dual Strikes and pair-up added a lot of depth to the game while being a controllable factor you can plan around. Choosing whether to chain an elaborate sequence of dual strikes or boost a unit's combat potential and survivability was a lot of fun. It made maps more interesting, especially when the enemies used it against you.
    2. Rescue: Rescuing adds a little bit of extra utility to your mounted units while also enabling less mobile units to bridge the gap more efficiently. Rescue/Take/Drop chains are also a treat to see whenever it happens, so it makes the viewing experience of Fire Emblem more enjoyable.
    3. Limited Reclassing: As much as I enjoy building, tweaking, and optimizing units, I think that reclassing should be more limited so as to better emphasize character and niches. I still enjoy reclassing, as it allows for more gameplay experimentation, and I wouldn't want it to be as rigid as Awakening but I still think that the free-form reclassing that the last two games implemented made characters feel less unique.
    4. Varied map objectives and side objectives: I think it's fairly uncontroversial to say that constantly having to seize a throne or kill a boss or kill everyone is pretty boring. Defend, survive, escape, seize multiple points, rescue, or stealth maps add much-needed variety to the tried and true formula of Fire Emblem. Side objectives also make maps more interesting when they give you substantial reward or allow you to avoid sticky situations. Chapter 8 of Conquest comes to mind in which you have to prevent lancers from recruiting villagers to attack you. It makes beelining for villages a top priority rather than another item on the bucket list.
    5. Map Interactability (Dragon Veins): Dragon Veins were an incredibly interesting part of Fates that I wish continued. The choice of when to use them and the consequences they had on the map made them a lot more fun and exhilarating at times. When enemies used them, it caused real nail-biting moments, like during Hinoka's chapter in Conquest.
    6. Limited Turnwheel: I do think that the turnwheel was actually a positive addition to the game, I do not think the maps are difficult enough to warrant the almost excessively high quantity of turnwheel charges the player has access to. I believe that using the turnwheel should be an active decision-making process of weight opportunity costs and not a mindless button to click whenever you make a mistake or RNG goes bad. This would make challenging maps with weird gimmicks more tolerable and allow for more interesting map design.

    2:57: challenge accepted
    Firene:
    - The first monarch, King Adam, was a close friend of Lumera, he was even rumored to be in love with her which obviously angered his wife
    - After the first war ended, the king finally confessed his love to Lumera, but got rejected as she was scared of getting too attached to him and lose another loved one since she was obviously going to live longer than him
    - 200 years after the war, Firene got it by a severe drought, which destroyed the fields and caused a starvation
    - The at the time queen of Brodia, Ruby, who was hungry for power and very competitive with the other kingdoms saw an opportunity and decided to launch an attack on Firene to conquer it’s territories.
    - Luckily for the land of flowers, Ruby was hated by her kingdom for her lack of honor and got killed when an uprising occurred in Brodia castle. The conflict therefore got cut short quickly. To prevent this from happening, the two kingdoms signed up a peace treaty, which centuries later resulted in their alliance alongside Solm against Elusia.

      Maybe just have unique animations that are more expressive. Like instead of a ball of lightning, just have the character be struck by 1different colored bolt, but convulse dramatically with it. Tbh I do agree with you, the crit animations for magic casters especially need to be done better

    Old-school chapter-specific bosses rather than recycled villains that "cannot fall here."
    Interesting new settings that have real effort put into their uniqueness like Hoshido, beyond being stereotypical European Medieval with a minor flavor in the way that Archanea and Valentia are "Greek/Roman" or how various desert kingdoms have been "Middle Eastern." Sacae did improve a bit on Isaach by adding Nomads in addition to Myrmidons as a flavored class. It doesn't need to be like Hoshido and have its entire own route and class tree, it doesn't really need to go that much further than Sacae did. It would be fine to have some class overlap; real life history shows that cultures in contact with each other will quickly start using each other's weapons. I would much prefer having the enemies you face be more distinct rather than face homogeneous medieval armies that may as well come from the same place.

      Yeah I agree! As much as I DID like the Four Hounds! Their were chapters where I felt a GENERIC ONE SHOT PERSONALITY Villain was needed! It's like they FELT like they were going to show up in the series again after Three Houses had a few and the early game of FE Engage! Then it's just fighting Hortensia, Ivy, Ivy again, Hortensia and their father (the only NEW one), A Corrupted who only knows how to screech! The Twin Bandits (Likely the LAST Chapter Specfic Bosses as the ACTUAL last is just the first one from Chapter 3 in a different Class), The Four Hounds Sans Griss and Hortensia, The Four Hounds sans Zephia and Griss (and REALLY should have been Chapter Specific instead of Mauvier and Marni), the Four Hounds, the sisters undead father and The Fell Princess (till the year is over, I can't spoil), That Chapter 3 bosses I almost forgot was the same one because she was TOO one note!, Mauvier and Marni (I GET fighting them in THIS chapter, hence why the Desert fight never should have been THEM), Griss (okay at least HERE he made sense), Griss & Zephia along with the Fell Princess, Griss & Zephia TOO SOON but at least for the last time! You get the idea (At least the final two before Sombron were good BECAUSE of who they were)
      But the point is you note how you fight some TOO MANY TIMES! I get the "Cannot fall here" but that only worked for say the Chapter where it was you're 6 rings vs the Six Rings stolen from you used by the villains! Beating them to get the rest back later. And then they fall off! At least Griss and Zephia DIE in their final rematch! Would have been interesting to get a REACTION out of them if you took the other out! Would have shown some growth instead of leaving that for the AFTER battle cutscene when they were DYING (like Griss who looked like he didn't like Zephia very much but that scene showed he looked at her as a mother figure DROPPING his sadomasochist persona abit to REALLY get mad seeing her FALL! So his "reveal" on their deaths was more FORESHADOWED! Or Zephia despite her "lack of caring" since she's seen others she's "gotten attached to die too much" losing her cool for once when he falls! Would have been interesting then leaving that to the after battle cutscene!). I still LOVINGLY remember how pretty much ALL the bosses of Path of Radiance and even Radiant Dawn had interesting Boss conversations with Ike that I just HAD to have him fight each and everyone to see them all on my first run when I noticed them (I ALWAYS have my lord fight the boss at least ONCE or finish them off! Depends on if THEY need the EXP or the others do....or I don't want to FORCE a reset if it would NOT be in my best interest to have my Lord fight the boss when it's ASSURED THEY'LL get finished off instead if I do!) Good Times

    World building is definitely huge. Engage was so cheesy with the like "this is the pretty country, this is the strong country, this is the evil country etc etc." And good armor is definitely up there too. theres a couple classes in 3H that look so silly, with the only solace being I can just use default outfit for the units which is crazy cuz a lot of the time skip designs are really good outfits. I dont really care about weapon triangle nor do I care about My base features. i have a quick system in 3H to get it done fast and i just flat out ignored it in engage cuz I realized it was practically impossible to get enough bond fragments anyways so there wasnt a point. I dont necessarily agree with the 2D art tho. I think 3D art is better but the animations definitely do suffer.

      @paulman34340 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I will agree that you should have a choice of EXPLORING on foot the Base or going through a menu like in the older games (Specifically Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn)! I'm sure the menu would be GREAT for fans of the. You have to go on foot to play the mini-games! But the Kitchen (which I'm going BEYOND just for Supports and FULL ON looking at how you can use them for Stat Buffs, and ingredients would be LESS annoying to need or get to make anything) would be a twofer sort of thing! If you WANT to see character reactions! You have to do it in the base! And it's not just "Two characters with you're character" (And if it has to be, then at least have you're character JOIN in the conversations). Ore would be moved to a DIFFERENT mechanic then the FUCKING DOGS as to lower you're need to go into the Base and even make the forge worth it for the "No go back to base" speed runners as they can just use that and the Forge in the Menu Base instead! And the rewards for the Mini-Games need to be BETTER.
      I'm tired of the bases being MYSTICAL! As what I liked about Garreg Mach and even the Base in Three Hopes were they were more GROUNDED! Hell in Three Hopes since you're always on the MOVE! It reminded me of the Base I Imagined in Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn in the Base Menu. Tents up and the character's preparing for what's ahead! Felt more GROUNDED then a "mystical pocket dimension" or worse, A FLYING ISLAND THAT MAKES YOU WONDER WHY THE HEROES DON'T JUST HOLE UP THERE! (Or even more! Why did Lumera not just put the rings UP THERE! Since you NEED someone to bring you up there or let you in to get there and she can TURN INTO A DRAGON! Hell there's a RING ROOM IN THE SOMNIEL which makes me wonder more WHY they had to be in Lytos Castle where "surprise" they got invaded and stolen! I'm sure "The Fell Princess" AS I'M STILL IN SPOILERS TERRITORY TILL THE YEAR IS OVER! would have been STUMPED in how to get up there if that was done! Guess the writers were too busy TRYING to top Garreg Mach and My Castle that they didn't think too much into that I guess!
      Lore building for Engage DID feel abit like there were "the foundation and the Bricks were set down" but then nothing was build from them! Maybe if a sequel storyline (or a Spin-off set AFTER Engage's story as ALOT of the character's epilogues hint, but I guess that's suppose to reference how Mystery of the Fire Emblem's Epilogue's PRESENTED a possible after story.....that never came about as that was Marth and Co. final game so maybe not likely) could work on that! Three Hopes did in their own way (while causing a few errors, like Claude's Maternal grandfather being the one who died with Raphael's parents, where in Houses it was his Uncle I believe!) and for the most part it was interesting! World Building even if it becomes not so relevant to the main story can go a long way if done right to synergies abit with what is going on, can be the salt when used right on the main story (as one knows, TOO MUCH salt can RUIN the meal! Hence as I say a good balance can enrich!) I mean take the Tales of Series! Tales of Zesteria presented the concept of "Oaths" for empowerment. But it came LATE into it's story that it felt like an ASS PULL! Then come it's Prequel Berseria and now Oath's make more sense BECAUSE Zesteria set them up so they are better fitted into the story and make sense BECAUSE they were already established and now we get more info into them!
      While Engage Rings SHOULD remain in Engage! The Mechanic of the BOND rings with abit of the Engage rings should remain! Treat them like a Seperate Accessory that you can only equip one or two, grow them, they give a skill or special that isn't too overpower. No "Jojo Stand Ghost" and getting them is akin to either the Gatcha Mechanic of the Bond Rings (without making it BULLSHIT to get to S rank) and ALL of them have a Skill and a S rank Skill! I want to make them AKIN to buffs AND growth Buffs like the Crusader Scrolls from Thracia 776 were. Good buffers with uniques skills and EVEN MORE unique skill for S rank! Not too HEADBREAKING on getting them to S rank, but not easy AND not GAME breaking like the Emblem Rings/Bracelets were (Though fun, they did feel TOO game breaking sometimes) and hey. Their OPTIONAL! For those "RINGLESS" runs (I'm still pushing for a SKILL shop system akin to getting skills from the Book in Fates, but less ONLINE reliant and NOT dependant on the SP system of Engage! Fuck how that worked)

    One thing I would like to see is units actually having a reaction to a death or a death influencing other events. This mainly stems from when I first played FE9 and I accidentally lost boyd in his first chapter. At the end of the chapter, titania and ike actually commented on boyd's death, which really surprised me. Plus, while it didn't happen to me, the fact that Elincia can only get Amiti in FE9 if certain characters are alive was interesting. It feels like there should be more situations like that, especially if storywise, the characters are supposed to be close with each other. Another thing I'd like to see more of is the status effects from older games. Besides silence and poison, they don't really make use of them too often. I actually don't mind the 3d graphics for the most part, though I will say that I think the magic animations specifically have largely been lacking IMO since awakening, Especially for the higher tier spells. Last thing I wish would come back is the bonus experience system, though for that to work, they'd probably have to get rid of or limit skirmishes.

    i would personally like to see choices added in which can result in different endings, allow you to make good choices to move towards a good ending, or bad choices to result in a not so great ending, or even a series of good choices followed by a terrible choice for the worst ending, different endings gives more replayability, and with a good story you can make the game a lot more engaging if you can shape it yourself
    edit: btw, not referring to having multiple routes, still just the same route, but have different consequences for that same route, like certain ppl die or survive based on what it is you say and do between chapters to allow different side quests or stuff, kinda like fe7, but more choices

Luis' armor, although I liked it, didn't give off anything of his personality. It was just a design, but that doesn't make it fun. With the newer games having personalized armor depending on the person you promote to that class, I would rather have limited promotional options if it meant more detailed designs that show the character's personality.
    (Also I don't like the self-insert characters a whole lot, since they have to talk enough to be a blank slate, but never have their own personality so I don't really care about them)

    One thing I would like (even if I have no idea how it would actually work or how to make it "well done") is to reinvent mages. Right now they feel just like your average soldier that just uses Mag/Res instead of Str/Def. 3 houses did try something funny with the spelluses, although at least I didn't really feel it as you still had a lots of spells. Shadows of Valentia had spells that cost HP which really started to hurt you with the most powerful spells, expecially when you doubled.
    Some random ideas would be the mages having abilities that alter the battlefield like Byleth(?) ring had in Engage (creating fog, fire, ice etc. tiles). Or powerful spells that can be used once or twice in a map. Or similar abilities that Fates had with Dragon veins. Or... Buffs and debuffs (staves could be used for this). This would obviously make them very strong but you could balance it by making them slow and/or even more glass-cannony, or limiting their availabity (no reclassing for anyone). Or weaker normal attacks so that they are worse fighters but better at support etc.
    But yeah, something like that but better, balanced and interesting. I don't know if I would like it but I don't know, that's an interesting idea.

  • @austinraponi973
    @austinraponi973 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

    Interesting point about the map design. I agree with you that the map designs have generally gotten worse in recent FE games, though Engage was definitely better in this regard. however, the problem with map design has a larger problem lying underneath it. hear me out. You see, in the earlier FE games, they were able to design better maps because the devs knew exactly what you were going to have. For example, in FE8, they can have those mountains running down the middle of chapter 2, because they know you're going to have Vanessa to go and rescue Ross. Similarly, they can have multiple approaches to the seize point in chapter 20, because they know you have flying units, and if you don't have those, you can still take the long way around. They have to make the map more open because they need to be able to account for you having well trained flyers, or having no flyers at all. Maybe they died beforehand, after all.
    On the other hand, three houses doesn't have that at all. They nudge you pretty hard in one direction with each character, but they still have to account for the fact that you could have practically anything. That's why so many maps in three houses are so open with little terrain, because they need the map to be completable even if you have an army of nothing but archers, or nothing but wyvern riders, or any combination of different units. The same is true of awakening, where there are many different classes you can reclass your units into, and you can buy second seals for pocket change. even if you couldn't, you can grind infinitely for more xp and money.
    I think the real problem is with the class system of Modern FE games. they are simply not as compatible with good level design. the more potential options that the player has, the more the devs need to account for in the level design. We'd think the game was pretty badly designed if you could reclass all of your units into different things, only for those options to make it exremely difficult or impossible for you to finish a given level. This is also why the early game of FE tends to have better map design, because they devs have a more definite idea of the resources the player has available.
    Thus, what i really want to see is a return to the fixed class structure of earlier FE games. I know many will be turned off by that idea, but i truly believe its a case of less is more. This is especially because i feel that a character's class is really closely tied in with their character, to the point that i find myself avoiding reclassing because it doesn't feel right to me. With fixed classes and set promotion options will come a more solid idea of what the player has, and i really think that will lead to better level design.

    I do have to wonder if they may be able to pull off show-offy, character-filled attacks like from the GBA in a 3-D space? Given that Koei-Tecmo has had a hand in at least Three Houses, I think they could well take some pointers from the likes of Dynasty Warriors or Samurai Warriors and especially their Musou attacks for crits or skills. There are a lot of over-the-top, show-offy, but at the same time, short-and-sweet Musou attacks in especially Dynasty Warriors 7/8, and the attacks in general largely tended to have character.
    As for the point of the weapon triangle, I especially would like for them to merge Fates' weapon triangle with the Trinity of Magic, as I personally liked both. I don't know if having both would make it too complicated or not, though, but I was always able to wrap my head around all of it with no problem anyway, personally.
    What I personally loved was Fates' cultural classes. A lot of them may have been reskins of regular Fire Emblem fare like the Samurai being pretty much the same as the Myrmidon from before, but still, as someone who loves studying different cultures, it would be way past cool to be able to see more cultural touches akin to that in the series, and it does very much help with world-building. Like for an idea that I had for a roleplay due to not being able to make fan-games; without taking into account almost-absolutely-certain C-and-D strikes from Nintendo, obviously; I put in classes and a little bit of wordplay based on Chinese historical and fantasy warriors. Though it was difficult to do since Chinese warfare history never had different words for people who specialized in different weapons. But one thing that I would give to the Samurai class is a horseback archer/lance promotion alongside their sword. This is because in real life, while samurai are largely known in romanticization for katanas, they were really historically more into horseback archery and the yari; katanas were more of side-arms than anything.

Back when Three Houses wasn't out yet and you were making videos analyzing the teased changes to the series' formula, you said that you were happy the weapon triangle was not a thing in 3H because the game makes a choice for you. You argued that a player is going to use a sword against an axe 100% of the time, which wouldn't be necessarily the case without the triangle. It made the intrinsic stats of the weapons more important.

    1) A class and weapons system that plays to the character's strengths. The 3 Houses system would be the best jumping-off point but give the player more freedom. Even if you can promote from any basic class to any intermediate to advanced to master (or however many stages you go for), have in-mind a class tree system where promoting down this tree always takes you into a class which is at least as good at everything and better in at least one way. This will make promoting always feel good and make people want to use every class for strategic reasons. As cool as mortal savant was I was never able to shake the feeling that the additional speed of the assasin was worth more than the ability to use magic, and it sucked that promoting from sage/bishop to dark/holy knight halved your magic-uses, while promoting to gremory was girls only and cost you tomefare, these are 'master' classes, it's ok for them to just be better than advanced. I'll also say allow every class to use every weapon-type (even if there is a bonus to using the 'correct' weapons) and face no restriction on using weapons except for explicit, in-lore reason (eg, the royal sword becomes heavy as a rock in the hands of anyone not of royal birth). I would not want this for every strategy game I play, as constrained decision making is also fun from time to time, but to occasionally be unconstrained is also fun.
    2) For you to be able to summon unlimited skirmishes of any desired level, that you can get experience and enough gold to turn a profit on. This will be a controversial and I know many people won't like or use it, but persoanlly, I like being able to train up units so that when I'm looking at a map, I can pick which units to use based off of whats best for the map (eg. map has lots of axe units, lets bring my sword users) rather than what I feel happens where you don't much adapt your unit selection to the map, because the difference in raw strength between your 10-15 highest level units outways any tactical consideration. Also, some folks just like grinding and unit building, and I'm not convinced that this would take so much in terms of developer resources that the folks who won't use it will feel agrieved at having paid for it. On a related note, the ability to buy unlimited amounts of all weapons that there isn't a lore reason for being unique, and the ability to repair/replace any weapon that breaks.
    3) Some kind of online play where you can make maps using assets from the game to challenge other people with. Unlike the two, I expect most people to want something similar and even those who don't want it all that much to understand why I think it's important.
    4) For it to be different to what comes before and different to what comes after. This is a real strength of FE that each installment is so different. Similar to how I said that I wouldn't want every class to use every weapon type in every game I played, I like how Engage plays differently to 3 Houses to SoV to Fates to Awakening. The novelty spices up the strategy game, even when some decisions seem baffling. I don't think there is a platonic ideal for a FE (or turn-based strategy game), so i say yes, experiment with different implimentations of the weapon system and weapon triangle, different support methods, in some games have the overwhelming presence of the 'my base' like three houses, I wouldn't want a monastary in every game but I appreciated it for the 1 game we had it and the flavour it brought to that game.
    5) In response to your wishes
    More and better world-building and writing, yes, for the reasons you gave. I'm easy either way between one-story, multiple routes with a 'best route' (Fates) and multi-route with no 'best route' (3 Houses), the execution matters more than the choice itself.
    Good looking armour, I see where you're coming from and agree to some extent. I like heavily armoured chonks like Jade, Kellam and Louis for the knight, great knight and general classes, but we have other cavalier classes, mercenaries and heores etc to have the armour styles you want. Engage could often be overdesigned at times, but as FE is a bit anime-ish it doesn't hurt to have slightly impracticle designs here and there.
    Classic Weapon triangle. Could take it or leave it, messing about with it is one of the things which can give each game a unique flavour.
    More Terrain. Yes, this would be good for all of the reasons you described. A war game without terrain is aiming for beauty in simplicity (see chess), FE could not pull that off.
    Less 'my base', I think Engage got it about right for what should be 'average' for an FE game. Many (real) battles (and wars) are won and lost in the preparation before the first bullet/arrow is fired. Having much more or much less is still an option, I enjoyed Echoes even though there is nothing to do between battles, and I enjoyed the 3H monesatry although I wouldn't want either every time.
    Return to 2D pixel graphics. No, I enjoyed it for looking at the GBA games and more recently Dark Deity (an FE homage talked about and shown on this channel), but I think modern FE has the budget and graphical capability for 3D graphics and can still get good, over-the-top animations with it. 2D graphics can stay with the indie/low budget games and low res consoles, but FE had the resources to get results with 3D. (i wouldn't want 3D for every game, but if FE can't find the resources for 3D then no-one can).
    Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

    This video reminded me of why I love the Tellius characters so much. They actually look equipped for combat... you know, how soldiers would be. And while the later games gave us some pretty good armor designs, most of them were armor knights with pretty heavy armor. A middleground would be nice.
    But my personal wish would be a return to more "unique" statlines. Engage and particularly 3H suffer from a problem in which the growths and bases of most characters don't deviate significantly and extremely lopsided stat growths (such as Barthe's 2% restistance growth) have basically gone extinct. This, combined with the often underpowered personal skills and the broken reclass mechanics in these games make them feel very same-ey.

    I agree with basically all of this, though I don't mind the 3D as much if it is done like you said similar to the way of the Tellius games. I feel like politics of the Tellius games is part of what made it so impactful to FE fans, it felt like what was happening actually mattered rather and players cared about what was happening, the new games I can't help but feel tempted to hit the Skip button.
    I would also like less Avatar importance and romance in general, I get that the Avatar is probably too popular to ditch now but at least have it like a soldier or something rather than 'The Chosen One' type that even the villains can't resist if given the chance.

    I think they were cooking something with the Break system, which is head and shoulders more than I can say for a lot of established devs. It just needs like, 200% more refinement of the idea to incorporate together with the weapon triangle.
    What I want are more interesting criticals. 3x damage is of course tactically important, but certain classes or weapons could be set to do something different with crits, letting you raise crit chances in bigger chunks than 5 or 10%. Apply staff ailments with magic weapons, set aoe debuffs so that enemy phase crits might HELP you survive instead of allow the enemy to focus more damage on the same unit, etc.
    Then you can throw all those special ability actions into your crits. The way they're going now, it's just becoming final fantasy tactics/disgaea.

So people who want to feel nostalgic or experience the graphics of old, or at least massively upgraded pixel graphics, they can. They can also chose to play it like it has been, with 3D where it typically also improves for the next subsequent game. With maybe the ability to swap them, but only if you restart the chapter.

Just imagine the possibilities of having people join/leave/betray your army depending on your actions, and also comment on your actions on the battlefield. While we're throwing in a wish list of things that won't happen, I'd also like to see good characters again, both in design and personality. The designs in recent games (especially Engage) are absolutely atrocious, and have shifted in a direction of that 10 year old anime genre that is just rather absurd for a Fire Emblem game. Also, I appreciated the characters in the Shadows of Valencia remake, they felt really fleshed out and unique. In recent games, there are faaaar too many support conversations, and quantity over quality has not proven to be a good thing. The characters just feel super weak, so I'd love to see them attempt a compelling story with meaningful characters and character development.

It's just not realistic for a big flagship title to be released with pixel art because the average consumer undervalues that art style. Instead, I think it's far more likely and also in the series interest to continue polishing and stylizing the 3d characters. Engage was a big step in the right direction in terms of UI and animations, but naturally we can do better in the character design department.

    While everyone here is placing their thoughts on the comments, I though I would add mine. All I want is a game that has the story and character writing of games like Tellius and Three houses with gameplay of Fates. Fire Emblem has always been a sum of its parts from gameplay to story to characters and it has had a mix of serious and goofy. The reason why I could not enjoy Engage despite its gameplay was because the characters would often act overly goofy without trying to build upon themselves or the world as a whole while making unfunny jokes. The story also had flaws but I believe that it is important to properly critique bad aspects of the game which is sad as many people point to many excuses like a "Return to form" or " the story does not matter" to lowball any flaw in the game's writing. I hope you have a great day and that the next game does a better job at balancing gameplay and story

    Honestly not much to add ! I'd personaly want to remove reclass, or maybe the Fates iteration...I find it more interesting when you have to manage your army with what you got instead of changing everyone's class (whichh also makes no sense lore wise...I mean, they said many times you need some pre-disposition for magic...how the fuck does Raphael become a mage, and how Lysithea can lift a war hammer with one hand ?)
    Concerning weapon triangle...I'm fine without it, but i'd like IS to not only make weapon types more unique, but aso give us more fun stuff like Kaga actually do, convos in battles, special events like the Mareeta one for example !
    And just more interesting weapons, I feel Fates did it more or less well (lot of bad ones, but still some interesting ones) such as weapons with skills or stat boosts, etc, even prfs, we really lack prfs in modern games, prfs that aren't legendary or tied to the protagonist like....since awakening, I think only Owain and his daughter got this luxury of having a personal weapon...(didn't play engage and TH is very blur in my mind)

    One thing i would love to see is more unique promotions...
    Even if it's fun to tinker with a lot of units in different classes in Three Houses and Engage, it also destroyes the uniqueness of evey character! So i would want to see a return to having either set promotion for a class like Echoes, or a branching system with very clear pros and cons with each.
    Hell, if they gave every character with the same class a unique looking and mechanically different version of the same promotion, it would be so much more fun to use different units!
    So even though you start with 2 swordfighters, and they both have a swordmaster promotion, one might lean more into the fast and dodgey ninja aspect like a Dreadfighter, while the other becomes harder hitting and tankey like an armored samurai.
    So even though they are both swordfighters and pretty identical in their base class, they get wildly different rolls when they promote!
    The ultimate dream would be to have different looking and playing promotions for everyone in the game, so no two units end up with the same final class...

  • @jlfrasch
    @jlfrasch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I want to see a persistent world map with a concept of time passage. The movements of enemy armies should update with every mission you undertake. If you choose to do a skirmish or paralogue the enemy should not just wait for you to come back, they should attack somewhere else.
    I also think you should be able to split your army into smaller teams. If you do, then you can do multiple maps during one "world turn". The cost of doing so is a split inventory and not being able to call in units from the other team(s). Further, I think you should be able to call in your own reinforcements during a map of units you did not have deployment spots for, if you take certain reinforcement points (which would otherwise spawn enemy reinforcements).
    I also want to be able to hire replacement generic units. These should be able to do up to B supports only with all characters. Their names and affinities should be random, but you should be able to pick their class. Named story characters would of course be the only way to have special classes, but the generics should cover the basic base classes, knight, archer, cleric, etc.
    The idea is to fill out the armies with generics for every map so there are less impactful characters that might be lost without all casualties coming from the pool of characters with real backgrounds and special classes. I just get tired of every map feeling like an unrealistic 8 people kill 100 enemies fairytale when real wars have more balanced losses on both sides. Such a battle would be legendary, but when every skirmish or mission is legendary, are any of them really?

  • @karmenion
    @karmenion 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I mean you don't even need to look at Octopath or Triangle strategy for nice looking pixel art. Just look at the pixel models of characters in Engage and you can see there is a potential there. Would I want the battle animations to be on 2d backgrounds? Hell no. I actualy like how Engage looked(except for some character designs who were overly designed(and I am not talking Celine, because her design, as absurd as it is, is filled with personality).
    I don't like how every character can be any class. If they want to keep that, then at least limit how many characters can be certain class and stuff. Like maybe each class has only few promotion crests and once you use them there won't be any more in that playthrough.
    And most importantly fewer playable characters, who actualy have a role in a story, not just appear in few chapters and support convos.

    Fully seconded on the Tellius armor design, one of many things that makes me love its characters.
    One big wish I have for the next new FE is to cut down on the micro management. The Somniel is a massive improvement over the monastery but still locks too many important features that you can't just ignore behind different interactions or things you have to grind for like with SP for skill inheritance. Tellius' base preperations perfected the amount of micro managment and how accessible it is on top of having base conversations.
    Also these are kinda vague but I hope the map design is good and varied and maybe goes the extra step of going into more story/gameplay integration again.
    A big character roster with room for experimentation would be great too, I'd much rather have more individual characters than reclassing.

  • @itsallenwow
    @itsallenwow 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    The number one thing for me is eliminating or limiting heavily the reclass system.
    Obviously this would help with problems where the whole team is flying and you lose out on having characters feel unique.
    But it would also help massively with the map design. Part of the reason Three Houses had so many giant, flat maps was because if the late game maps had a ton of terrain. Then the player would be hugely advantaged being able to fly over everything while the enemies would have to put up with a lot of movement impairing terrain.
    This is also clear when we talk about how Engage has some great early game maps, but they get worse when you get later in the game. The designers have to account for everyone being a flier, and thus the maps have to become huge and empty to limit the advantage fliers have.

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I 100% agree with you on most of your points. In particular, it really shocks me how uneven the map design is across the series. The more Fire Emblem I play the more it baffles me, honestly. I won't pretend it's super easy to make a great map, but it's easy to know that a map isn't up to snuff and playing through titles like Awakening, it feels like there are a lot of maps that got through while not being up to snuff. Hell, even with Engage having decent maps overall, they are often pretty uneven. Like, I love that Covert units get double avoid bonuses from terrain... and there are a LOT of maps with no terrain whatsoever. I did really enjoy the simple terrain manipulation in the game though. Corrin's ring is great and Fire in particular often felt very well executed whether it be from Corrin, Roy, or a cannon or something. Gave me some Larian Studios vibes in the best way possible.
    As for the story/worldbuilding, I think most of the games have been pretty meh in that regard. Like, 3 Houses has some nice stuff in the background, but it feels like you're rarely ever interacting with it beyond a surface level. That's what I loved so much about the Tellius games, honestly. You were constantly interacting with Laguz, dealing with Racism, having to handle royals-- not as peers, but as your superiors in most cases.

    I miss the armor of old; we definitely need to return to that flair.
    Basically, I want everything mentioned in this video. As another comment said, I would like limited reclassing options and varied map objectives as well.

    I agree with all these points, especially the animations. I'd love a modern 2D fore emblem but probably only as a one time thing. Animations definitely had a much bigger impact and looked better on gba in my opinion.

    I think the 3D can be done in such a way as to bring the feeling of the old 2D sprites if they're animated with the same design sensibilities. I rememver seeing the original announcement trailer for Guilty Gear Xrd, opening with Sol and Ky facing each other with idle animations in a standard fighting game fashion and thinking "hey these hand-drawn sprites look crazy good." then they clashed, freeze frame, and the camera panned and revealed they were actually 3D models. my mind was blown at the time, seeing every attack animation looking like the sharp and snappy spritework of old, and GG Strive has only improved on the look. Doing that with GBA/Tellius character design? I think it'd be pretty killer

    That idea with 2D characters in 3D enviroment like Octopath, Triangle Strategy etc. is great, but...
    I am fan of some kind of base that is getting upgraded by me or with story progression. It comes with me wanting additional interactions outside of battle without boring conversations with NPCs in list menu where I can only see dialogue and NPC's avatar.
    I wouldn't mind if they made a game with Octopath style and borrowed 3D skits from Tales of Arise that (at least for me) are better than 2D skits from previous Tales of [...] games.

    Not bad.
    The only thing that I'd disagree with is Louis. His armor makes sense and is nice looking. But they could ramp up the armor looks in general.

    I'd like to see a more classic fe with a lot of classic things returning. At this point the heavy reclassing system from awakening has reached its peak with Engage and not much substantial change can be made. Meaning the series is at a crossroad for its design and how the games after engage will innovate. But designing a whole new design philosophy is not easy and by bringing back many old staples in a sort of "series recap" game would make going into the future easier. As future games wouldn't be a complete 180 in terms of design from engage and more time to collect ideas for the future would be given.

    One thing I'd love is to return to units being class locked. Since Awakening, games have been more and more about some sort of sandbox where you can mix and match classes and skills to make your favorite unit a demigod. And hey, I love Thacia because it allows you to do exactly that, but even then units keep some semblance of identity thanks to other stuff like movement stars, movement growths and pcc.
    It may be a hot take, but I don't want every unit to be good, and I don't want every unit to become samey with little difference. And actually the best example I have of how classes and weapons can affect is Andaron Saga. Runa is one of my favorite units because she feels unique, not only is she a 7 move infantry unit, but thanks to the hunting bow she serves a niche as your only ranged option for effective weaponry for a while. And just like that, old fire emblem had a lot of units which felt unique and fun to use even when they were bad.

    I want to see good map design, not just in a terrain sense but in enemy placement/varied objectives and unique setpieces. I'll always remember the siege of Tahra or the assault on Garreg Mach or the courtyard of Crimea Castle because of the way they were presented and the grand scale of everything making me feel like was pivotal in turning a war (with actual stakes, I'll add)
