This is a real story of Dr. Anandibai Gopal Joshi who was the first female doctor in India. This was 132 years ago when girls were married off at a very young age to a much older man. Some of those men were good men, who were social workers trying to improve the society and changing people's mindsets by not oppresing the women but uplifting them. This is one such story where with the help of her husband, not only did she start school but became the first female doctor in India inspite of all the oposition and the resistance from the society. Jaby, thanks for taking interests and reviewing Indian movies made from different regions of the country. I think it's equally important to know the history behind these epic movies. This movie is a real life story of a couple that lived around 132 years ago in Maharashtra state in India when the country was ruled by British empire. It was then considered the only job of a woman was to be a good housewife and do everything only for her family. Education was restricted and for a woman it was mostly not encouraged since the only job was to take care of her family. Her individuality was hardly ever considered. Tradition, religion and culture were given supreme importance. Anybody going against these social norms were harassed. Given these circumstances a man 20 years older to this lady forces her at first to study and be educated. He does everything possible, even hits her. Though his actions were inappropriate the intentions were clear. In the processes she loses her baby while she was pregnant at age 14. And then she decides to take education as her personal goal. In mid 1800s, when India was blinded with dark traditional practices, where religion was the ultimate exercise anyone should follow a man Mr. Gopal educates his wife from the British run English school. She is the the first woman doctor from India who studied feom Pennsylvania University in 1800s. They were outcasted by the society. After completing her education she came back to India and established her hospital/clinic. Unfortunately due to some health issues she died at the age of 22. Their love story and her determination to educate herself and be a doctor after loosing her child is showcased in the movie.
the missionaries were very notorious for conversion (and even today this issue persists) hence the whole society would be wary of them since those days. I must add that the sea and ship scene was important .It showed the extent to which the lead couple went to realise their dreams because crossing the sea for an upper caste hindu is still a taboo in many areas The story is true and tragic as well because Anandi herself lived only till the age of 22.

DearJaby read this ... When I was in school we had lesson on her life ... better you know... putting this for your better understanding .... It was an era of darkness of British atrocities and Highly orthodox Indian community where going against tradition was boycotted and punished ( you can compare this with Europe's medivial age, when women trying to learn, get education, were considered witch and burnt alive in public =witch-hunting of Catholic Churches). Anandibai's husband- Gopalrao, was so rational in thoughts that he decided to get her education in era when women were suppresed and kept in homes. A typical Patriarchal society. When her husband thought to take the help of Christian Missionary who otherwise preached the importance of education to " uncivilized" Indians ( as they call Indians), missionaries asked Gopalrao and Anandibai to get converted to Christianity ( this merely indicates how pervert these missionaries were). Going against societiel norms, Gopalrao took her to one female British professor teaching at that time in Kolhapur University in India thinking that it will be easy as she too was a woman. Tragedy is that, the British professor didn't kept her promise. Anandibai later went abroad (crossing sea by a ship ...let me tell you, till last century hindu Indian society believed that crossing sea or travelling on sea is breach of religion and hence they would boycott such people) Jaby, you don't know how hard our generations have come to get this edge. Perhaps sitting there in advanced nations like USA you may never understand what all our society sent through. Amen....

Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi is the first Indian/South-Asian Female Doctor and also the first Indian/South-Asian female to go abroad and study something!! She was from a high-class Marathi family and married into one as well!!! She was an inspiration and role model for many females that eventually did great things, may it be related to Independence or something else. But, unfortunately she's not that famous anymore. Lost to history due to the politics of various Political Parties..
Also, the woman in red is actually bald. As widows were made to be, during that era. All widows were made to wear a specific colour all their life - red or white, with being bald until they die. A dark patch in the history of South Asia/Bharat/Hindustan, but it do is there...
Anandibai was India’s first female doctor. This is based on a true story when India was under a british rule. You can find more information on her on internet. She was an incredible person with an inspiring story.
Nope. At the age of fourteen, Anandibai gave birth to a boy, but the child lived only for ten days for lack of medical care. This proved to be a turning point in Anandi's life and inspired her to become a physician Source: Wiki

Another point about the lighting that Jaby liked. In my view it wasn't because it's a low budget film, it has more to do with the fact that India did not have electricity 132 years ago and lighting in the house was by lamp lights. Thanks to Jaby I watched this trailer. 👌🏼🇮🇳
From what I can gather, the husband wasn't oppressive initially also. He wanted her to get educated and learned from the very beginning, and scolded her when he saw slack in her performance in studies
She was actually married at the age of 9 to her husband who was 21 and a widower. And she became pregnant at the age of 15 , but lost her baby after 10 days because of lack of medical care. And yes, they were Hindu. Can't wait to watch this movie looks amazing!!
You should get to the depth of this story. She was a legend. Imagine at that time, to travel half across the world just to be the first female doctor in the country. It's unfortunate that she passed away at a very very young age. And a big thank you for showing interest in our movies.
Suhasini Ganguly and Anandibai Gopal both were graduated in 1886. Suhasini Ganguly was graduated from Calcutta Medical College and Anandibai from Pennsylvania's Women's Medical College.
Some things that need to be clarified: 1) Anandi's husband was not against her education. In fact, just the contrary. The scene where he is shown beating her is because he gives her a book to read as an assignment and when he comes back he finds her sleeping. Gopalrao was a fanatical believer in women's education, in fact his behaviour bordered on maniacal when it came to his obsession that his wife should be educated. 2) Regarding the conversion, according to Anandibai's biography, Gopalrao actually used it as a bargaining chip. The missionaries were always on the lookout for upper caste Brahmins who would convert to Christianity so that the rest would follow. Gopalrao enticed the local missionary with the promise to convert in order to get his wife admitted to a missionary school. On the other hand, he threatened the local Brahmin community that if they didn't accept his decision to educate his wife, he would convert to Christianity. So he basically played both sides to get what he wanted. 3) Unfortunately Anandi never practiced medicine in India. While she became the first Indian woman to travel abroad and get a medical degree, she contracted Tuberculosis during her education and died a few months after returning to India.
this movie is set in a time when India was under British Rule, its story happened 132yrs ago When most of Indian society was fragmented and seriously pitted against each other by Brits using their divide and rule policy brits also used their time to convert millions of Hindus.
I know about this story from a wonderful tv series that used to come on dd metro in the 90's. Its an inspiring story and an important part of our history. Glad this movie is coming out...really hope its a huge hit
#jabykoay while watching trailer of "Anandibai Gopal" I saw your expressions which gives everyone a strong statement on how to approach someone who does not understand language though can connect through emotions and the storyline, I loved your review and you analysed the trailer well, during that era it was difficult for indian women to even get basic education available but against all odds she became doctor, story is well supported by songs which is the core of indian cinema, your view on shallow deapth of field used was outstanding, though only one comment, movie was not low budget, cinematography sometimes comprises of producing something in available content!!! Thanks for supporting and watching a Marathi movie.
This is an amazing movie. You should definitely watch it. Dr. Anandibai Joshi was the first female Indian doctor, who was a Hindu, who overcame all sorts of hurdles to become a doctor. A Hindu female, becoming a doctor 132 years ago was an unimaginable thing. Her husband wanted to educate her which was not the what the society supported. Child marriages were practiced at that time. He was extremely strict, short tempered person but also had a hidden personality of a soft hearted person. The biography is much more intense than the movie. Please do watch this movie and give a review.
This movie is actually a true story of first female doctor and this was back in 1800s when there was no electricity in India hence low lighting 🙂... amazing movie.really inspiring
You MUST watch this movie based on life of DR. Anandi Gopal Joshee... it's inspirational. She was India's first women doctor. And she got her degree from USA.
@Jaby, this movie is based on a true story. Not many people know about it, but there is even a crater on Venus named after Anandi Gopal Joshi/Joshee (The Joshee Crater) for her contribution to medicine, she being one of the first Female Physicians from South Asia in 1885. She studied medicine in United States from Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She was married at the age of 9, as was a custom in the earlier days, and was pregnant by the age of 14. Her baby boy could only survive for 10 days due to lack of medical care. That is when she decided to pursue medicine. This is an inspiring story and I salute the Marathi cinema industry for making a film on her....

Dear Jaby, it's great that you viewing Indian feature films in regional languages.. I would like to recommend a movie called 'Harishchandrachi factory' which is about a man who made the first ever feature film in India. Known as father of Indian Cinema 'Dadasaheb Falke'.. to add to this trailer her story once she comes back is quiet tragic.. but a forgotten legend, I am so happy, is being rediscovered..
Also it feels so good this all happened for real and bad is that she died at the age of 21 because of TB...thats very sad...all this struggle she did for nothing except that she inspired many more people at that time...
As a girl prepping to study medicine, this woman's story coming to screen is touching. But yes, it was hundreds of years ago and now, it's mildly off to see a guy inclined towards medicine .

1) Anandi's husband was not against her education.
She was one of the only 3 female doctors in the world at that time to study medicine and by sheer coincidence they met each other at that time.
Thanks Jaby for reacting to the trailer.

मी मराठी। आनंदी बाई आमच्या देशाच्या सर्वात पहिल्या महिला वैद्य। खूप अभिमान। 😀❤ धन्यवाद Jaby!
It's a very nice film
India's First women Dr.Aandibai Gopalrao Joshi.am lucky because am little part of this film.am working local production team.

I really like your thought Jaby. One should think each other as human beings irrespective of gender...
Jaby do more Marathi trailer reactions...it is awesome
It's a must watch movie Jabby. It's more than you see in trailer.
But yes, it was hundreds of years ago and now, it's mildly off to see a guy inclined towards medicine .
she has never noticed husband's unconventional efforts to achieve her glory against all odds.
Anandi Joshi became a gynaecologist. Helped thousands of women and infants and became a role model for women education.
she was only 21 when she died. its always like this whenever you see some great person they die too early.
Yes she came back to India after completing her education and served the nation..
I just hope whole movie will be upload with english subtitle and it will be interesting to know if she left india for ever or she back to india and help the indian society
