Metallica played at the Moscow Monsters of Rock Festival, along side of AC/DC, The Black Crowes, and Pantera, one month after the 1991 August Coup. Metallica wasn’t alone, although they were the stars of the show.
You’re correct that Western degenerate music helped tip the Cold War in the West’s favor culturally. The cultural war began with rock’n roll and the Beatles and expanded as Western music evolved. By 1991, the youth were hungry for Western music with metal having the largest following, particularly with gopniks. Gorbachev’s glasnost’ (openness) policy likely contributed more to the concert’s impact than the performers. It was a coincidence that Metallica was the hottest band in the world after releasing an album that became in instant classic.
But Metallica doing it alone? Can’t see it. The concert bill attracted an audience from across the Western former-Soviet Union because they had access to Western media.
Put into the context of the CIA conspiracy to overthrow the Soviet regime through culture, this concert is like a mouse fart in a hurricane. It wasn’t insignificant, but it made a contribution.
Just keep in mind that in Sept 91, Gorbachev was gone , Yeltsin was in, and all the power players were amassing their forces to determine who takes the spoils. This concert represented a new post-Soviet Russia, where socialist realism was shitcanned and the youth could listen to whatever pleased them.
