Comgrow Robo CNC Review: The best first budget desktop CNC router / engraver for beginner?

  • Previously, I made a few videos on upgrading the 3018 CNC, which is the cheapest CNC machine in the world. I put a 500w spindle on it and it can cut aluminum slowly with a quite acceptable result.
Since the structure of the CNC 3018 is not rigid, especially as the X-axis moves a lot when working on metal, I want to get another mini desktop machine with a more rigid frame. I recently found this Comgrow Robo CNC engraver. It came with an aluminum frame, larger diameter 12mm linear rods on both the X and Y axes, 6 limit switches, a Z-probe, an emergency stop button, and an offline controller.
Today, I am going to assemble and review this Comgrow Robo Mini CNC Router ...
I am happy with this machine, for beginners to buy their first budget desktop CNC router, I would recommend this Comgrow Robo CNC over the cheapest CNC3018. I have purchased another 800-watt spindle and may make more videos for the spindle upgrade and make some aluminum parts with this machine. If you are interested please check out these links:

I love her "voice", so clear and gives a great sense of confidence. Great job. The old soul inside the teenager speaks out loudly. You have a bright future as online teacher/tutor should you pursue it, just as some musicians or artists are natural, having great articulacy and a crisp clean vocal is quite rare nowadays.

When I was your age, I was doing science fair...once a year and NOT to the same standards you and your brother do every week. You have many, most? adults beat, and I hope you keep up this meteoric rise.
By the time you hit your 30's, I expect you to have already changed the world in ways I can't imagine now.
This must be what it was like to be in the room when a young Mozart sat down at the harpsichord.
Now, excuse me as I have a $259 piece of hardware to buy. A brilliant girl and her brother on TH-cam recommended it, and I'm coming to trust their judgement on these matters.

Great how you make it clear why this is the better super cheap router. I also like that nifty offline controller. You put so much effort into your preparation and then you present us with such informative videos. FAN-TAS-TIC. I miss the part where you show the funny cut-outs.

As we have school on weekdays, we normally record some clips after dinner and work for 2-3 hours. For this video, we recorded around 120 short clips but many of them were not used in the final video.
So I would say we spend 2 hours on content planning, 15 hours on recording + quick editing, and 3 hours on final editing, the total time we spend on a typical 10-15 mins video would be around 20 hours.

I recommend you to attache a plywood to the bed, then you drill a 1 centimeter x 1 centimeter matrix hole and finally you carve the surface so the bed will be totally parallel to the router. Then, every time you want to carve a material, you will know exactly where you have to drill the material in order to screw it to the bed

Stock motor has a 44mm diameter so a larger 500w motor will need a 52mm or so mount. As the rails are larger than a stock 3018, it doesn't look like any pre-made mounts will work. This will need a new 3D printed mount. If one is made, include a mount for the Z axis switch this model has if possible.
    Eager to work with aluminum.
Also, have had no luck in using the Z probe with Candle- once you set the height, it is still hovering off the work surface, but that seems to be a Candle issue.

    • @AuroraTech
      @AuroraTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, you are right. I emailed comgrow and they sent me the spindle mount STEP file, I will modify it to fit 52mm and share it in future videos when the upgrade is completed. BTW, I Universal Gcode Sender, I think it's better than candle.

Can any of the budget CNC units find the center point of anything that is clamped into the bed area, or would each piece need to be hand measured with a ruler(?) Reason I ask, I'm tryng to figure out how much extra post-production (non-CNC) cutting would be needed, after the CNC work is finished(?) That said... love the videos!

If you’re not sure on how deep to cut a groove, set your g-code to make a shallow cut. Set the z axis for plenty of room between the tool and the surface of your work during rapid moves. If you want to go deeper, move the tool off to the side of your work piece and run the tool down so that your z axis is at zero. Jog the tool down the amount you want more cut out and reset the Z axis to zero. You can run the same code without changing it and the tool will cut deeper the amount you moved the z axis. Also the other direction, if your code is set for a deep cut, you can raise the tool up from the zero position and reset the z axis to zero. Again without having to change the g-code and it will cut a shallower groove.

I can’t find any machine that looks solid and has 500 watts or more for under $1300 so I ordered this since it is $203 on Amazon now with Prime shipping. I guess I will have to do your mods. I took from your video that the 500 watt motor is better than 800 due to working at lower RPM.

    Hello I have a question
I use Comgrow CNC every day. I bought jz based on your recommendation. Unfortunately, recently the bearings in the spindle broke and I had to buy a new spindle. Because it was nice to get an original one, I bought a Genmitsu GS-775M 775 CNC Spindle. Unfortunately, it does not want to work with the Comgrow CNC motherboard. It starts shaking strangely for a second and then stops. Do you know what could be the reason for such behavior?

Every 3018 is a bad joke compared to this. It is solid and rigid with the X axis being the shortest. It has nicely designed axis knobs.
I tried the Sain Smart 775 ball bearing upgraded spindle. They both have .001" (.0254mm) run out which is a problem for metals with this diameter cutting bit. I think it is a problem with the machined collet these motors use. Get rid of this runout and with proper feeds and speeds, this will cut steel. I will say again, proper feeds and speeds.
The Pulse Width Speed control does not work well for these small motors and can be very noisy. I ordered a proper benchtop power supply and it runs much smoother and quieter. When I have the time, I may go back and redo the spindle collett but I have other more precise machines for steel. A precise spindle is the answer, not more power.

Hello dear, I just bought this model and was wondering what type/brand/model of spindle could I buy to upgrade it? As you mentioned, it is a bit underpowered for certain applications. Great video and I just subscribed.
