Fitting High Handicap Golfers | Golf Club Fitting Discussion

  • At 2nd Swing, we believe in club fitting for all golfers, including fitting high handicap golfers. We've noticed that many high-handicap golfers feel that they would not benefit from a club fitting. We disagree, and welcome golfers of all skill levels and swing types to go through a 2nd Swing Tour Van fitting.
    In this video, 2nd Swing master fitters Larry Bobka and Danny Ferrell discuss fitting high handicap golfers and why these golfers can see plenty of benefit from having golf clubs fit to their swing.

    22.8hdcp here. Did my putter fitting late winter this year with Larry. I dropped almost 10 strokes off my putting average, had multiple rounds with no 3-putts, and a personal best round with a 32 putt average all since doing that fitting. Well worth the time even with the high handicap. Can't wait to get back in!

    This past Saturday I had my first club fitting at 2nd Swing Minnetonka. Danny is a very knowledgeable club fitter, and his relaxed demeanor definitely helped me settle down after a rough start of 15 or so lousy shots!
    2nd Swing has a huge selection of clubs. I started out with four different brands and fairly quickly narrowed it down through his knowledge and experience! After Danny made some club and grip adjustments, my golf shots improved dramatically. I headed home a happy customer with a set of clubs that fit my swing, and worked extremely well in comparison to what I had used previously. Looking forward to golf again when the weather actually cooperates!

    You eased my mind so much. Thank you. Started golf in 2015 but would play 1-3 times a year. The past 4 months I’ve been playing almost every weekend and my swing is great but kinda felt embarrassed going to a golf fitting. Thank you for those words at the end!!

    What if you're an amateur, but not planning to be a high handicapper for very long? Is it worth it to get fitted when your swing could be much improved within a year? Or can a fitting carry you through your progression?

    I’m 6’4, getting back into golf and probably a 21 handicap. I’m getting fitted soon however, Just to get going I bought a set of Ping Eye 2’s (Black Dot) 1,3,5 wood Ping Eye laminates, and an Anser Putter and have been scoring the best scores in a while. I can’t imagine how much better new GI clubs are going to improve my game. And, I’m going Ping!

    If I was starting again I would buy Cleveland 12 degree Driver, a 5 W , 19 or 22 hybrid, 5 iron to GW HB Turbo hybrid- iron, CBX 2 wedges and a long handled putter. Loft is your friend as a beginner. It reduces the side curve of the ball. The design of the Cleveland clubs gets the ball up in the air and are easy to hit. Plus they are not too expensive.

    In my opinion, the best course of action for a new golfer is:
    -Buy a used set of clubs (preferably game-improvement focused) and start with them.
    -Go to the range consistently for a few weeks to get some basics down. Maybe watch some TH-cam tutorials to get going but don’t overload yourself. Try to focus on one tip each range session.
    -Start playing some actual rounds of golf. Preferably with friends or weekday twilight tee times to help keep the pressure and pace as reasonable as you can.
    -Play for awhile until you get your swing somewhat consistent. Maybe a year or so until you feel you hit your clubs without as much variation swing to swing. I’d say wait until you can shoot 100 pretty much every time you play a round.
    -Go get a fitting and reward yourself with some nice clubs dialed in to your tendencies. Try breaking the fitting down into a few pieces rather than going through the whole bag at once. Like, this week driver… next week irons… and so on.
    -At the range, focus on the clubs you’ll be getting fit for in the week prior to your fitting to get those specific swings as dialed in as you can. Also, don’t do a crazy workout or anything too exhausting in the days before your fitting that may affect your swing.
    -Go in with a little information to help the fitter. Maybe some specific brands/ clubs you’d like to try, inconsistencies you’ve noticed in your game, etc.
    -Find a balance of taking the fitters suggestions and your own opinions (based on feel) to get yourself a set of clubs that are tailored to your swing and also make you feel confident at address. Voice your opinions on feel honestly as you go. If you much prefer a blade putter and they like you in a huge mallet, tell them your thoughts and a good fitter will seek a nice middle ground that suits your stroke and your confidence. With that said, keep an open mind to trying clubs or specs you may not have considered yourself. That’s why you’re getting fit, after all.
    -Have fun and don’t tell your SO how much money you spent! lol

    I'm 18 hcap, mid-50's in age. Went for a driver fitting (not with you, I don't live in the US) for a new driver a couple of years ago, really bad experience, now have a driver that I can't use and although I get that fitting may be useful, I'm in no rush to try it again.

      This. I've seen fitters screw up more mid or high handicap golfers than you can imagine. This video is mostly quackery and nonsense. Don't waste your money on a professional fitting if you don't have a consistent swing and impact pattern.

    I want to get fitted but I don't always hit the ball constantly is that a different problem in itself or should I still get fitted in hopes that it might improve that. I just feel like not hitting constant might affect what I get fitted into but I know I need longer clubs as I'm 6'6" using standard length clubs and feel like length is some of the problem I have since I stand up a lot swinging the club.

    • @mattgenovese5891

      It really depends. Most likely not. If your talking irons, unless your iron head are forged, you can’t really change lofts/lie (most golfers play with a cast club, which you can’t bend). From a shaft perspective, you most likely need a different shaft, which you’d need to purchase for each club as well as installing each one, easily $200-$300 right there. I
      If we are talking woods, you could get fitted for a shaft with your club head.
      You will get the most out of a fitting by bringing your clubs in to compare to others. Most likely, another club will work better for you.
      Hope this helps

    I feel like im an outlier i hit the golf ball pretty hard and it goes pretty far but i fly the ball pretty low and think i could use some forgiveness as well. Is there a higher lofted forgiving iron. Any ideas where to start looking would be much appreciated

    • @2ndswing

      Absolutely not! You do need to be able to hit the ball but even if you are having a bad day a good fitter can learn a lot and you don't need to have a repeatable swing. 95% of my fittings are with it least double digit handicap golfers . - Thomas

    My issue with higher handicappers getting fit is the length and lie being standard and if they could then adjusted during the fitting it’d be easier to determine the best clubs

    • @lkae4
      @lkae4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's part of what a good fitter does. But driver launch characteristics and putter stroke are pretty independent of that they can be greatly helped too.

    • @2ndswing
      @2ndswing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great point, Andrew. In the Tour Van, we have the ability to change length/loft/lie for a player during the fitting to optimize results. Static measurements (height, wrist-to-floor), are important, but while dynamically swinging the club, some players may not fit into length/lie angles that static measurements suggest. -Danny

  • @Barneyrubble241
    @Barneyrubble241 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think a fitting is required for a very tall or very short golfer. lengths and lie angles need to be adjusted for solid contact. My position for high handicap golfers is, don't bother. Find out your swing speed and get the right flex. Do you want to hit it higher, find a club with a shaft that has a lower kick point. If you want it lower, get a higher kick point. I believe it's just a way for all of us to spend more money on golf. If you suck, it's not rocket science to buy a game improvement iron instead of a blade. Spend the money on lessons and the time practicing your short game. You'll be much better off. I have a friend that bought a set of Mizuno JPX 900 Tour irons. He's about a 25+ handicapper. Beautiful clubs, but completely wrong for him. He didn't need a fitter to tell him those were wrong for him. He could have just asked me. For the same money he could have bought a great game improvement iron that would have actually helped him play better, not worse golf.

    First question I ask the person fitting anyone. What is your handicap on the course?
    If it's not pro level, get out of the booth, stop fitting people, and move on.
