    K this is game changing. My dads 03 cummins takes a month of Sundays to warm up in SK winters, but with this turbo it heats up faster than my 15 hemi. That alone makes it worth it.

    That’s remarkable!
    My old 5.9 would NEVER heat up at that temp until it had a bit of a load on it.
    The one I’m building will totally have a VGT.

It was always loud but now I have a fleece cheetah and 5inch axle dump and it is super loud we are getting our first snow in Northern AZ today and just went to the store and everyone was asking me if my truck was about to take flight. Just wondering. They say the Cummins will far outlive the truck chassis. So how is your truck managing with all the road salt out there in Alberta?

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m in Saskatchewan so right next to Alberta, but it’s managing just fine. I have no rust on my truck other then a tiny little bit at the bottom of my tailgate. Just wash your truck when it gets covered in salt and it’s all good. I think the rust happens when guys let their vehicles stay dirty for weeks on end.

    So do you let your truck completely warm up to operating temp every time? Or do you just wait to a certain degree? Like I try to wait until my engine oil is to about 105° before I drive.

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I try to let it warm up to operating temp but sometimes if I’m in a hurry I don’t. But if you are driving your truck with a cold engine that’s fine as long as you drive super gentle

    • @carls2210

      Dark Iron Diesel yea I don’t get on it. I baby my truck as much as possible.

    • @MadisonFishing
      @MadisonFishing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Let it get to 105-110 and get on it. As long as you’re not romping on a cold engine and then shutting it off before it gets up to temp you’re fine. The damage comes from grocery getters that fire up their engines and head right down the road and turn it off before the clock heats up evenly. You don’t have to let it get up to operating temp before driving just make sure it’s at operating temp and ran good before turning off and letting cool.

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d bet that if he got the regular turbo instead of the screamer turbo like I have it would be much better with cruise control. There’s two turbos to pick from, I picked the bigger one. But if he got the normal sized turbo I bet you could use cruise control just fine.

    • @darkirondiesel
      @darkirondiesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sound comes from the vanes being closed which puts a load on the engine to help it warm up quicker. Yeah if your truck is deleted you should be able to get that jet sound with tuning that closes the vanes to warm up truck.

    • @moparproud3978
      @moparproud3978 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coking has nothing to do with emissions. Coking is a result of oil being cooked by a hot turbo. This is why you let it run just a bit after a good run before shutting down; oil going through the journals helps carry away some of that heat in the turbo. In extreme situations, oil sitting stagnant on bearings will cook, coke, and your bearings are dead. Emissions and VGT has nothing to do with coking

    Hey Dude,
    it's not the time used for warm up it is the cold-crank that worries me.
    I live in the south west desert and no Sir, we do not have the f'n freezing crap you do.
    Saying that, I have installed an oil pan heater pad and even though it's warm down here
    I do plug in both of the pre-warmers (oil & radiator fluid) year around and yes, with over
    500 K on the 5.9 l Cummins 12-valve, the oil is still fairly clean for ~1.000 miles after an
    oil change.
    The old 12-valve is a keeper for sure and it will last longer than me the way it looks!
