I have a suggestion redstone signal can go through blocks so to really save materials to make a redstone signal go down you should place two blocks under the first one then break the middle block and place the redstone between the blocks and repeat until the signal has traveled as far as you want it to go

For the water elevator, you can use kelp to make water source block, which would be faster and you may also try to combine the button with a timer, so that the mode will switch back automatically
The elevator could be made even simpler if you just had the soul soil and magma block right next to each other and regular non-sticky pistons pushing them back and forth at the press of the button.
