Well, the emerald took you to special stage with all specific variables used for the big ring interaction left at default values. That alone causes Sonic to respawn in Angel Island Zone Act 1 on coordinates (0,0), which happens to be top left corner of the map. Performing horizontal underflow in that case will unleash madness, which awaits right at the beginning. Since the game was in cutscene mode at that time, it will try to play every single cutscene at once. That overloads the game causing it to restart.
There's actually an even bigger glitch in Lava Reef that allows you to make an NTSC game try to run in PAL mode until you turn it off. What THAT means is that the visuals are slowed down but the music is sped up, many objects are off- center, and best of all... YOU CAN PLAY AS BLUE KNUCKLES. Don't ask me how to get the glitch though, it's very complex.
BahnDaten You need hyper sonic. Go to lava reef act1 as sonic AND tails, and then go to the part where lava rises and falls and there are some platforms so you can get across. You need to sit on the first platform on the left and when the lava rises, jump in it and turn hyper right before you touch lava. If done correct, you will glitch through the lava. move throught there until you fall through. Now advance until the end of the level, BUT MAKE SURE TO GET a lightning shield. Beat the miniboss and you will now be in lava reef act 1 loopback. Now you need to traverse through the level but i dont know it off the top of my head, it includes jumping over a wall and going back into original act 1. Go some more backwards you will find a spot that will crash the game. This is where the glicth takes place. I reccomend you watch ORKAL's Sonic 3 & Knuckles Glitches and Oversights, specificallt the video(s) on lava reef. The glitch is called mega glitch i believe.

when you were transported to the special stage, did you turn around and walk into that red sphere voluntarily? or did the game force you to walk into it? if you choose to why didnt you try and beat the special stage? im just very curious of what the special stage really looked like. it looked cool! lol

Robotnik's hidden explosives end up blasting Sonic's corpse both in and out of an Angel Island Special Zone. They also end up destroying the rest of such floating island the bunch sit upon, and with nowhere to play the game there is no more game to play, which causes the reset.

The Megaglitch increases the speed of all the game's songs, but drastically slows down the game. This obviously didn't take place in Lava Reef, and it obviously didn't slow down the game and speed up its music on reset.
I used to have glitches like this when using debug mode but never by forcing one to happen without it. And what the hell the spheres sent you to act 1 angel island but Act 2's bombing scene started to happen I am so confused
ive done this on my iphone on a megadrive emulator. i got to the end glitch on angel island and killed the boss ive got save states and my game didnt crash/reset like this 1. you will need debug mode because there is no ground and will fall to death.

Clownpiece it's not that complex you just need a second player to fly you up over the walls, although getting the spindashes right is a bit hard
