Dynamic Stability Control On vs Dynamic Stability Control Off... Which is Faster?

  • Its very difficulty to find a vehicle without electronic driver aids such as anti lock brakes, dynamic stability control and traction control in todays day and age. Although these systems have many advantages, they also have some limitations... but can they help produce faster times? Lead Instructor Brent Trail takes two identical Ford Fiestas, one with the electronic nannies disabled and one with them active, and puts them against the clock on a stage to see which one is truly faster.

My rallying days are way behind me now and back then the only 'aid' was a mechanical LSD 😂
The results here were pretty much what I expected to see, especially on a loose surface. Of course, these aids are not engineered for rallying and neither are most everyday motorists so skilled at car control. The gap between 'faster' (in a competitive sense) and 'safer' ( in a for most people most of the time sense) is more like a Grand Canyon chasm.
    Great video.

Would be interesting to see if there was much difference with DSC on but traction control off (if that's an option on the Fiesta).

Probably very closed in this case or at least in some other cars. I think depends on the system cause some electronic aids are very conservative and the car loses a lot of speed when aids kicks on

Love the comparison! I'm curious to know what the difference would be to an untrained driver. Would a rookie benefit from the aids or out grow them real quick?

IIRC before 2004, World Rally Car allowed a lot of electronic aids, and it was banned after that for "cost cutting". So I guess they probably help somewhat on a sealed surface.

Braking a single wheel or pair on the same side can help turn in but it's not practical to have dual brake pedals in a car, besides not having the space for them. Tractors often have dual brake pedals, one for each side, as heavy stuff on the back can prevent turning so you need the ability to do it with the brakes instead, and obviously tracked vehicles have no other way of turning. I imagine that's what the electronic aids will have been in the WRC cars, tuned very differently to what they're dealing with in the Fiesta that are for cutting in where the driver is assumed to be running out of talent on a public road. Quite different in practice even if they're similar sounding on paper.

If you are stuck in snow or try to climb a slippery slope, don't forget to temporarily deactivate the traction control, there is usually a button for it somewhere on the dash

I have a huge sticker on my mini Cooper dash reminding me to turn off dsc. It's absolutely terrible on dirt with traction on. It's a 2004 so maybe it's not as good as the fiesta dsc. I know it would be a 5 second difference.

      Wrong. Rally =/= daily driving.
Those Nanny systems are there to catch you when you screw up in daily traffic.
So, when you are on a closed track or a rally stage, by all means, switch them off but don't do it in a daily driver.
There are situations in which these kind of systems are undeniably superior to even the best driver.
Suppose you have to brake HARD on a surface where the right side has reasonable grip and the left is greasy/icey. Without ABS the car would rotate clockwise and you would have to come off the brakes to catch the slide. That would dramatically increase your stopping distance because you can only brake 4 wheels at once or 0 wheels.
WITH ABS you just stomp on the brakes and you let ABS figure it out for EACH wheel SEPARATELY, it will brake to the maximum of available grip on each wheel. The car will still be controllable. And you would stop way faster.
The same also applies to getting going (traction control) on the same road.
i do lots of track driving and did my fair share of dirt road driving. It's more fun to drive without those systems but in traffic i do not want to drive without them.

@@jfv65 or when someone else screws up. There are some impressive vids of these systems during (simulated) evasive manoeuvrers at motorway speeds under braking where no driver would manage to keep the car from getting badly out of shape.

The one serious liability with the electronic controls is that cursed power drop. Traction control would be fine if the system only broke the excessively spinning wheel without disobeying your pedal-to-the-metal. Anti-lock braking systems can be gamed by making them really work hard as by braking too late with immediate best pressure (even invoking brake-assist pressure if available). To game the stability control system, enter turns way too fast and make the rear differential braking fight the excessive yaw (whether plowing understeer or wanna-spin oversteer). If only the system didn't retard timing/close throttle with excessive yaw, the driver could then use his skills to direct the car's attitude with throttle and/or brake. So, it all comes down to finding a way to disable the system's control over engine power. It would then be relatively easy for the skilled driver to learn the tricks necessary to game and take advantage of the remaining controls and even better his times achieved with an uncontrolled car with the added benefit of some insurance against a sudden contingency.

Use the dsc to help you rotate, then you dont hardly touch the brake aswell. But you really have to trust the cars electronics then.

Yes we were left foot braking over some gas for our trail brakes. The DSC Fiesta only allows a four second overlap of brake and gas making longer corners a little more challenging.

Of course the non is faster. We all now that. its a matter of safety on the road w/ drivers. If someone pulls out in front of them and they have to yank the wheel hard (because untrained) in a non DSC car they would lose it and wreck while the car with the DSC would keep it planted and balanced and save them. Speed verse safety. Road = safety wins. NOT ALL PEOPLE CAN DRIVE AND CONTROL A CAR IN A STRESSFUL SITUATION.

    • @samuelgomez3311

Yes but I think depends a lot on the esp system and its intervention when kicks on. Some aids are very conservative and the car lose a lot of speed but others is the opposite (but less safety too on the road).
I think depends on the surface too... In this case was obvious the esp off would be the winner but on dry tarmac and faster corner should be almost the same.
Nowadays the electronic aids could be better than any human. In most cases are not cause of the engineers prefer be conservatives and not using the best technology (more expensive)

Young arrogant Skynet: You don't know what you're doing; let me take over. Also young arrogant Skynet: Oops.
I only buy up to 90s everything-manual cars for absolute control. Supreme court should pass a law to allow drivers who know what they're doing to completely disable the "safety" feature. These so-called safety feature can change driving habits, and they can be dangerous when a driver switch from a Skynet version to an all-manual one.
