    I've had my herd nearly four years now. The first year was challenging - near constant asthma attacks, having to basically live off my inhaler. That was fixed by switching hay brands as not all companies "de-dust" their hay (not sure what is involved, but it makes a difference). I found switching from Kaytee's Timothy to Oxbow's Timothy made my breathing easier.
    The second year however my allergies continued to develop. I noticed my hands and fore-arms would welt up and break out in hives every time I refilled their hayracks, it would look like I stuck my arm in a hornet's nest afterwards. That's when I switched to orchard grass.
    Two years later now with no problems. Girls are all happy and healthy, and I can stand being in the same room with their food.

    What’s really, really weird… is that I had medical testing done to determine the cause of my allergies and asthma, and when the results came back… I was allergic to basically every native grass EXCEPT for Timothy. Just Timothy. That was the only common/local grass or weed I did not have a powerful reaction to. They didn’t test me for Guinea pigs specifically, but thankfully, I did not have any reaction at all to the animals they DID test (I requested testing for feathers, also).

    When I was a little girl, I all of a sudden became allergic to our 3 cats. I had tests. I decided to stay on antihistamines until, eventually, the older 2 passed away then I moved out of my parents house. Thankfully I've been OK with other animals ❤

    My Guinea pig died in July and I have not gotten anymore because of the hay situation. I am afraid to get them and find out that the orchard hay is still a problem. Once I make a commitment to any animal I keep it.

    I am also highly allergic to timothy hay (most grasses really but timothy hates me a lot) we feed out piggies a mixture and I take a daily antihistamine. I still suffer and have to wash after handling my piggies because of the itchies but I would rather suffer than yeet my piggies. I love them so so much it would break my heart XD
    I have recently invested in an air purifier though so I'm hoping that'll help on the dust situation because that stuff gets EVERYWHERE. Hubby vacuums the critter cave every day for me though and he feeds the hay so I don't have to be in there while the dust is flying around. That helps so much.
    I think I'm lucky having someone else to do the bits that make the allergies the most worse. It totally sucks when he's ill XD I have to change my clothes to go in there, wear gloves and a mask to feed hay. The piggies think I'm an imposter!

    I made the switch to orchard grass before my allergies got too bad. But what I learned from my local rescue before I got my pigs was to keep the pigs in an open room like the dining room so the allergens can be more diluted and not concentrated like in a bedroom. This also allows the allergens to go through my HVAC filter instead of just going through my air filter. When I had to temporarily keep them in our spare bedroom, it was like night and day! It was way harder to breathe in the bedroom even with orchard grass hay

    First comment, first view. Does anyone care about that? I'm also allergic to Timothy hay. It took me a good while to figure out that was the problem, and I'm still dealing with the results more than two years later!

    Also people make sure you don't have HIDDEN MOLD in your house. This tends to be in corners, inside cupboards at the back. Where ever there is an outer wall such as the corners of a house as the cold can make the mold happen and not enough inside air circulation. What you described matches to my own horrible nightmare, which turned out to be a cupboard in my bedroom! and that mold brought down my immune defense. Suddenly I developed a strong allergy to my cat and also my hamster having never had a cat allergy before and never an allergy to any animal!! I ended up having to sell that house as I dreaded going into it, despite having it treated. The body does hit a point where it says run! I am about to get two male guinea pigs and will be starting off with orchard grass and fleece. I do already have an air filter. My current home has no mold thankfully and is just 10 years old. Good luck to anyone with allergies. Thanks for sharing Scotty. I constantly recommending your youtube it's a real blessing!! My cage will be a C&C 2x6 with a deep loop loft. I also do have a dust allergy, which oddly is not affected when I spend time with my horse. Also guineadad sells Orchard hay in a box that you just open up the sections to reveal the hay and you can attach the box to the side of the cage. This stops you from having to handle the hay. More expensive but may save some people or help maybe.

    I’m allergic to all grasses, molds, hay, foods and trees. I’m allergic to pine trees. I live in the Daniel Boone Natural Forrest. Apparently if hay is fresh cut it’s time for the Benadryl. This was before Benadryl was over the counter. I had a bunny and broke out when I held him. I kept him until he went to the rainbow bridge. My doctor has me on Loratadine in the am and Zyrtec at night.

    I have been under the care of an allergist off and on (mostly on) since I was a child. Hayfever, bronchial asthma, allergic to every tree except pine trees (thank you former Maine 2nd house)....Technically I am allergic to the pigs, but it is mostly cage cleaning in summer time. My cat allergy is no joke . I get allergy shots for it. I can't breathe and I can't speak when I have a bad reaction. As a petsitter I always tried to hide my mask but I have to wear it cleaning cat litter boxes-former allergy nurse's orders. Same nurse also said if I ever switch pets I need to be tested first. I wash my hands thoroughly after because if I forget and touch my eyes just what you said. I also have dry eyes and take prescription Restasis eye drops on my regular eye doctor's suggestion. There is a decent over the counter allergy eye drop I carry in my bag. Had bronchitis and then my 1st severe asthma attack a month later. When you literally spend a night coughing and then can't keep cough medicine down... The worst is my apple allergy. The last time I ate 1 my throat totally closed up and I had to make myself sick to be able to breathe. I love dogs and might adopt a dog for a change now that I can after Nini dies. I already know I am borderline allergic to them now so that has been added to the monthly shots as well. Lately I have been getting used to having Hizentra infusions for my immune system. They found out in February that I have developed Common Variable Immune Deficience (CVID). Count your blessings if you don't have any allergies, asthma or breathing problems. I now have a friend who deals with more things than I do. One example is 3 brain tumors.

    Scotty,
    Sorry to hear that you thought of giving them up. Timothy Hay does make nose itchy but still buy it.
    Fresh cut grass is bothersome as well.
    As I've gotten older I think I am allergic to cats but I cant imagine not having them. Long hair cats was more noticeable growing up but its the dander.
    I do have asthma and the prescribed albuterol does help. I prefer the aerosol machine to the inhalers but you need to have inhalers for when away from the house. The doctor had prescribed Flonase and it does help. Now its available over the counter.
    Having bad asthma attacks is very scary. I hope someone checks on you.
    I hope you feel better. Just gotta remember try not to touch your face when taking care of critters.

    You know as a kid when I had guinea pigs, I also might have been allergic to certain type of hay that we had for our guinea pigs. I didn't know at the time we thought it was just an allergy to the guinea pigs but then it hit me when I got older. It wasn't them because I was at a friend's house and well I wasn't having bad sneezing fits. It was the hay. We were feeding the guinea pigs. Man, I wish I knew that when I was younger. Timothy is the plant that farmers are stereotyped as having in their mouths. The bottom of the stem of the seed heads is sweet and tasy to chew on. I wonder if chewing on green timothy stems as a kid inoculates you against later timothy hay allergies later. I am allergic to alfalfa, but not timothy.

    This will be a VERY helpful video for some people! I’ll keep it in mind as a reference. So, several years ago, when I was living at my last house, I was allergic to cut grass, or something in it and would have to keep my inhaler handy. Allegra, or the generic equivalent, helped a lot. I didn’t have guinea pigs then, but anytime I would go around hay or cut grass, I could feel my airways closing up a little. One time I remember clearly, was at the Greene County Youth Fair and I remember walking into a building where they kept rabbits and the hay made my airways close up to the point where I was gasping. This was before I was prescribed an inhaler so it was really scary…. Since I have moved to the village, I don’t seem to have any grass allergies anymore. I even cut the lawn myself now and can handle Timothy, Orchard Grass, etc no problem. The only time I’ve had trouble breathing around hay was this past month and a half when I developed pneumonia after a round of Covid. I’m feeling a lot better after antibiotics though thankfully! It seems piggies can catch Covid btw! I gave them extra peppers and vitamin C and they recovered quickly… Thanks for posting this helpful video! 😊

    I'm not allergic to Timothy hay, but I wanted to treat my piggies to something different and tried an orchard grass and alfalfa mix.. They aren't big fans of it. I was so surprised because so many people with piggies have said how much their pigs liked either or both that I was certain my boys would go crazy for it. Nope. They will eat it if they don't have their regular hay but it takes them a while to give in and they don't eat as much of it or as eagerly as they do the Timothy hay. I was so disappointed with the whole situation after being so excited to give them something I thought they would be excited about, too but that's just the way it goes I guess. My "if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all" thing struck again. 😢

    I gave my neighbor girl one of my surprise baby male piggies. Her Dad was highly allergic to piggie, wood shavings, and Timothy hay. After doing a power point presentation on how she would use paper bedding, grass hay and always keep Theo in her bedroom, she was allowed to get Theo. Theo is a unique piggie, from the time he was born he avoided all 7 of his siblings and didnt really hang with his Mom or Aunty. But he loves his human Mom. BTW her Dad has ever had an issue after almost 4 yrs.

    Your body was crying out, “stop! You’re poisoning me!”
    For about two decades, we thought my brother was allergic to guinea pigs and then finally found out it was just the Timothy Hay he was allergic to. That’s why we have 10 pigs again now that I’m an adult. (yes, my brother lives with me. What did you expect in this economy? 😂)

    Thanks! I had mad allergies about 12 years ago, to my cats! I needed an inhaler plus Flonase and a steroid. It was miserable but since I had cats since I was born, I never suspected an allergy. In retrospect, I realized why I always had hives. My doctor assumed I would get rid of my cats and I nearly laughed at him! Turns out Zyrtec is a miracle drug for me. I am so grateful to be able to keep my cats!

    Same! Moved from Timothy to Orchard hay. 😷
    Not sure if you’ve shared, but where do you buy your hay? Buying in bulk seems to be most cost efficient, but 50lb Oxbow has become worse (last two batches have tough hay that our piggies don’t like to eat) and more expensive.

    I have a question. Is it possible that a guinea oig could be somewhat allergic to the dust from hay? I have one little girl, Iggy, that I think it bothers. I know it bothers me and now Im taking meds for it.

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's unlikely but dust can make anyone sneeze in general. I buy hay in bulk and try to get the dust out before I feed it. Having a reaction to dust is different from being allergic to a genetic species. I am allergic to certain types of pollen and certain grasses and cats

    Hey Scotty I have 6 years old girl and her name is Pepa,Last Thursday she got diarrhea so I immediately took her to the vet and we find out that she have Coccidia eimeria😭she got antibiotics and pain medicine and she got bene-bac but her poop isn’t looking good(it’s soft and longer like a couple poops in one row) I cleaned her cage twice a day she eats and drinks normally but can you please tell me if that kind of poop could be caused by parasite 🦠 and for how long it has to be like that? Please help me I don’t know what to do😭

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't know if it is a parasite or not, Ivermectin or any antiparasitic medication should cure or prevent parasites and the vet should be able to do that. Activated charcoal also can help with extremely soft poops or diarrhea. There is a charcoal cure video on my TH-cam channel and it is also posted in the illness section of the free guinea pig care guide on my website.

    Most hay goes to waste in a guinea pig cage. Guinea pigs only eat certain parts of it anyway. Over 25 years ago when I had my guinea pig, we gave him a salad of sorts for food that included pellets, seeds, dehydrated fruit and more and that's all he ate for the 7 years he lived. Our other guinea pig ate the same stuff when we had him and he lived until 6.

      @SoCalGuineaPigRescue 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hay waste is just a part of having piggies but that is no reason not to feed it. And with orchard grass there is less waste. I sure hope someone reading your comment does not also try to feed the diet you fed to your pigs 24 years ago to their piggies. 🥲

    I'm allergic to hay when it is in drying process. But here in Czech Rep. there is mostly only "meadow" hay, But I bought timothy hay to try it - it is really expensive here, 15bucks per kilogram which is price for what I can get 25-30kgs of meadow hay. I got hives on my skin when manipulating timothy hay, especially if it comes more dusty with little pieces. I giving them timothy hay as threat few times in week, but I buying just 1lb bag of that hay from brand where it comes without dust and small pieces, so I do not expose my skin for more just few seconds, and its fine.
    Primary piggies eat meadow hay from 2nd cut. It is really soft and nice green, our piggies eat it much more than timothy, but they love timothy tops with seeds

    My husband is allergic to my Guinea pigs. He is dealing with his allergy to them and he has asthma. He was driving over the road and didn’t have to worry about that now it’s really bad that he’s home. My husband has to use his inhaler, prednisone so he can breath. I totally understand. We tried a cheaper fleece from Chewy’s and it was awful smelling after just 1 day. 6:37 We just can’t afford the really good fleece. I am not giving up my girls! They’re going to be 4 in June.

      Have you tried guinea dad liners or the thick liners from the pig room's Austin? You would really only need 2 sets of large liners and then smaller ones to keep in places where they lay at and eat to be switched out more frequently than the whole large one.

      @@neelymurphy6797 no I haven’t. We have a jumbo cage and not many places make that size except where I bought the cage and they charge almost $200 for one fleece. We have a loft too.

Scotty has also made a lot of his own before by buying the fabric and sewing the cotton batting in between, so he has videos showing how.

      I like to transport my Piggies either in a 2x3 C&C cage or the largest pet store cage I can so that they can travel together. If they are very bonded and trust each other it's not absolutely necessary but it couldn't hurt if the drive is safe and comfortable for them

    Our health is so important, and this is very important to share!! I'm so lucky to have no hay allergies, but I do have ulcerative colitis and mild allergies to some foods. So, yes, health is a big deal to us all, but especially if there are others we care for! It sounds like you went through so much with your health, but what a relief it must have been to have found what works for you!!! 💗
    Oh yes, foraging foods give a great variety, especially if your animals, are fresh food sensetive. Great video 😊

    Hi Scotty. I'm glad you found a good alternative to Timothy hay. Some people swear by Quercetin tablets from the health food store for allergies. There's something about Timothy hay, sometimes I get a cough, sometimes not but I give my piggies meadow feeding hay and all the other Burgess Guinea Excel various types of hay they sell. I've owned piggies since 1992 so don't worry, there's always a way around a problem 👍. There's a huge range of types of hay.nowadays. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us and take care 👍🐹🐹
