Lots of people asking about the passport/DL statement. Most US citizens don't have a passport. However, once in Canada, you can drive a car on a US license. This means Canada has access to those records. Canada will have a far easier time reverting back to pre-9/11 entry methods and allowing entry on a DL.

Sorry this may sound silly(non American) but how would one get into Canada without a passport to drive on American DL? Can you get on a plane without a passport or dock a boat without clearing customs?
Reason I'm asking said silly question is as a Kiwi from NZ I can go to Australia & drive on NZ DL(Australia has those records on us I suppose in same fashion as what your explaining about Canada's access to those records) but how would I legally get into Australia as I'd have to show passport @ one of those two entry ports?
Love your video's by the way, always a highlight of my day!!

Canadian here. More than 50 years ago, Pierre Elliott Trudeau told Nixon that “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt.” Well, not much as changed, except now the elephant is batshit crazy and psychopathic. One problem with allowing masses of Americans in as refugees is that some Americans do not realize that their US constitutional rights end at the US border. As Beau suggested, one of the biggest problems for Americans travelling to Canada or Europe is not understanding that the Second Amendment is not an international right.

Seriously, this is a thing. I work in a public library in southern Ontario (downtown branch, mid-sized city with high growth) and you might be amazed how many times I've had to talk down people who openly argue that "their second amendment rights" allow them to carry weapons in the library regardless of library policy. I will say that one time it became an interesting exercise, because someone took me up on my offer to look at "The Constitution" and he was honestly shocked to discover that Canada is governed by a compendium of Acts, laws, treaties, traditions (including uncodified and unwritten conventions), and amendment procedures. If you want to claim authority under a 2nd amendment here, you'll need to show me which one and explain how and why it's even relevant!

We in Canada have gone through this several times in the past where we have been either invade out right or nearly overwhelmed by refugees from the colonies or military juggernauts. This isn't the first time your political mess has boiled over to affect Canada, We had the British Empire Loyalist refugees, The war of 1812, and the Fenian raids to deal with as late as 1860-70s. The good news from our POV is each of these events only strengthened the national resolve of Canadians to stay a separate culture both socially and politically.

How the planes that were diverted to Gander Newfoundland were handled was the subject of the musical "come from away", and the HBO documentary of the same name.
I'm from Newfoundland, and I have relatives in and around Gander (I was born there), and they were saying that people were letting people shower in their houses, giving them toothbrushes, soap and deodorant, and letting them use their phones to call family, but that's not how it was portrayed in the documentary. I'm not sure if the people I heard that from were wrong, or the documentary was wrong. But them using a hockey rink to store food was true, and a couple of days after they asked for donations of toilet paper because they were running low, they had to tell people to stop donating toilet paper because they had too much 😅

I went to bed before the election was called, hoping she was wrong and that USA wouldn’t be taken in by his clearly useless promises.

    Hey Beau !
Étienne from Québec, Canada here. Subscriber...thoroughly enjoy your analysis, your style, your lucidity regarding US politics. Good balance of nuance and honesty.
However, regarding this video, I would like to say I do not wholly agree on the perspective shared, and I will explain myself.
First off, I am in agreement that Canada, in accordance with its humanitarian and democratic principles (at least, as they are professed) needs to make it easier for american refugees to come in and settle, far from the danger posed by political violence. All your suggestions are valid and should be considered. No beef there.
However, I doubt that Canada's main concern regarding what could happen south of the border should be preparing for refugees. I also do not believe NATO allies intervening will materialize.
As a Canadian, my main fear is what will happen to our own democracy if the US Republic falls prone to fascists, which is really, really more likely than most people believe (as you said, it can happen there). Even though «wargaming» and planning for the worse might seem hasty for Americans, it isn't for Canadians, because our capacity to intervene and stop what is currently unfolding is limited...so why not prepare for the worse ? And by worse I do not exclusively mean civil war IMO, but literally an authoritarian takeover where dissent, as brave and determined as it is, is squashed and scattered.
Biden has stated his belief in democratic principles and the electoral process, trapping himself : if the GOP takes Congress in the midterms, and Trump becomes president in 2024 by winning the electoral college (which is not impossible), how exactly will this fascist takeover be stopped ? Will there truly be widespread resistance ? I'm not really convinced. So far, every safeguard against this creeping authoritarianism has failed, and democracy survived barely because of Trumpist incompetence, not true democratic resilience.
NATO has been in an identity crisis for decades since the end of the Cold War. Since 2016, a lot of European nations started to reflect on a world in which they would take care of their own defense. Macron has said as much. Why would they intervene on the american continent, when Russia is threatening the stability of many nations in central Asia and eastern Europe, on NATO's doorstep ? Why would they deploy resources when there are already other crises nearer to them ? Plus, a lot of these countries are politically divided as well, confronted to far-right populists who are opposed to presumed «globalists» and to the concept of the EU itself.
And as far as nuclear deterrence goes, granted the projecting power of many European nations is totally dwarfed by the US, but France is a nuclear power as well as the UK. Maybe a civil war in America or a collapse of American democracy would simply accelerate the dismantling of NATO. There is an ocean between them and the US. Why would they send their soldiers to die here ? They depend on the US to an extent, but not to that extent. At least that's my take. NATO is a relic of the Cold War. If the US abandons it or fails to lead it, it will probably die. Maybe the EU or certain countries will send arms or aid...but a full-scale intervention ? Boots on the ground ? It's not a given.
Going back to Canada, I'm way more afraid of what would happen to our democratic institutions, and this should be our main concern. Because a Trump takeover, or even just a destabilizing of US institutions would embolden Trump supporters and Qanon believers in Canada because yes, we have those. This authoritarian plague is global. What happened at the Capitol could be reenacted here. Trudeau is frequently used as a target by the right and far-right, and a lot of hate has been slinged his way during the last election, so much in fact that he had to go out in gatherings with a bulletproof vest.

I would also be scared of US interference in Canadian elections, looking to sap them with disinformation. And as far as refugees go, if we welcome high profile exiles in Canada, and an authoritarian Trump government (or whoever pretends to be in charge) request extradition and start making threats...what will we do ?
Because Canada is not as stable as many Americans make it out to be. It is stabler, yes, but it's starting to catch whatever sickness has caught on in the US. We have conspiracy minded hucksters who blend opposition to COVID sanitary measures with political trumpist-inspired hate. Just look at Alexis Cossette-Trudel, known in french-speaking Québec and even in France as a megaphone for Qanon dogma. Maybe he's marginalized right now, but he has supporters...and we have hate groups too.
We are a young country that was officially founded in 1867 partly out of fear of US annexation (there was even talk of that during your civil war back then). The fear of annexation by the US was a driving force in the birth and evolution of early Canadian history. And in certain ways, it has not gone away. We had debates over nukes in Canada during the Cold War. There were really intense discussions around NAFTA when it was established. The fear of cultural assimilation in English-Canada is real in certain circles, which is why we have stuff like the CRTC to ensure a Canadian presence on airwaves and radio waves. Our economies are so intertwined, I doubt Canada could remain prosperous if the US economy crumbles or is rocked by uncertainty or recession.
So yeah...I sympathize with many Americans who fear what will happen, and hope that their Canadian neighbors will welcome them. And we will, don't get me wrong. But I do not believe welcoming refugees should be the only concern : there's tons to be afraid of. Canada also has to look out for its own democracy, because I fail to see how Europe will care enough to save us. That's my two cents, anyway.

She said she never knew what freedom was really about till she moved her. The freedom to sent her children to school without them being shot and killed. I think that we are at a time where this type of thing is more likely than it has ever been (except obviously for when it actually happened during the civil war).
You are right, the republican party doesn't want children to learn about slavery, they want to water down WW2 and the Nazis, completely ban abortion, outlaw gay marriage and interracial marriage and make non white and women 2nd or 3rd class citizens. There will be no safety for the LGBTQ community. They are talking about a 100 year rule and are putting in place laws and loyalists in positions of power to subvert the will of the people and be able to make it a republican dictatorship.
I know for me personally if I see it happening I'm getting my family out. I'm going to be a first time father soon and my family will be my first priority. Then I will evaluate whether I should join the fight or join my family in Canada.
A lot of it hinges on the next 3 years or so. This election is most likely going to be Republicans win the house but Dems keep the Senate. Basically nothing will get done because the Republicans will obstruct and the Dems will be holding back the Republicans. The 2024 election might be over before it starts depending on what states do in that time. If in 2022 legislatures are mostly democrat then we have a chance of turning things around in 2024. If people in positions of power in enough states are Republicans then the 2024 election is a formality and I will have 2 years to figure out what I want to do.

    1) who said we would let any Americans in? Why is it that the American answer to their own screw-ups is to decide they are going to come to Canada? It seems to me that any sort of mass migration would be a mess. IT wouldn't just be the lefty-libs trying to flee such a conflict, I can also foresee circumstances where the wacky-right would also come this way, either for economic stability and/or to launch raids into Democratic northern states likes NY and WA from across the northern border. (and don't forget, even Ted Cruz liked Mexico when the lights went out.)
    2) the other real concern that Beau did take into account is that the Fox nation/Trumpist propaganda has griped the imagination of Canadians too. We have our own anti-Covid/anti-vax faction who drink from the same koolaid. IF the US slides into Civil strife, it is erroneous to think Canada will not likewise shatter into factions. That may prove to be a challenge for using Canada even as NATO staging area, as there will be Canadians who side with the Trumpists.

I took it for granted our Socialized way of life and always knew us Canadians were 'different' than our American cousins but not to the degree that Agent Orange has exposed. I've always looked at the draft dodgers of Vietnam as true survivors and many as heros.

Pretty God Damn hard to overcome the trauma of War especially if the language and culture is so different. I have close connections to the immigrant newcomers in my area and I'll tell you.... They have a stronger work ethic and family values than a lot of the homegrown spoiled brats who think it's their due to go from high school into the Middle Class without Paying Their Dues.

Canadians are also concerned that the US could become a right-wing dictatorship. Even without a war, a powerful anti-democratic government with policies and laws that are repugnant to more Canadians will require lots of adjustment on our side. Developing closer ties to other countries and blocs is already underway. A couple other considerations: Canada has a much smaller population than the US. We can’t absorb millions of refugees. Also, Americans are generally incredibly insular, knowing very little about the rest of the world. Americans can also be incredibly arrogant and thoughtless, just assuming it’s ok for them to demand that another country suddenly become like a little America where they can get all their favourite treats, except everyone to speak English and admire all kinds of stuff about the US systems that actually strike us as appalling. People who want to succeed in being accepted as formal immigrants with a path to citizenship are advised to learn about Canada’s founding myths, current attitudes, and laws, including our much stricter gun laws.

Beau, I'd like to add some thoughts to this, I hope this is beneficial to the conversations.
For starters, I am a Canadian, born and raised here. My mother is an American citizen but has lived here for most of her life. I tend to keep myself fairly well informed on both Canadian and American politics.
The first thing that I think should be pointed out is that if a civil war were to erupt in the US, there is no guarantee that Canada won't be embroiled immediately. International borders are not necessarily going to contain such a conflagration.
Canada is more left, politically, than the US, however in various polls over the last 5-6 years, Trump was bringing in between 20-35% among Canadians. His popularity tends to be concentrated in the Prairies, interior of BC, and a few rural regions of other provinces. 1 major Canadian Federal Party, the Conservative Party, and maybe even one minor one the PPC, could easily push to recognize Trump as president and to bring Canada into alignment. It is conceivable that Canada would split, with a group of provinces opting to join Trump's America, if a split occurred in the US. When Trump got elected, someone asked me what it felt like and my response was "Living in Austria in 1933". Note that I didn't say Poland.
Assuming that Canada's borders remained static and somehow the civil war remained contained, Canadians don't really want a flood of Americans coming into our country. Canada is only 1/9th the population of the US and our populace would rapidly be overwhelmed by a large migration. What's more, an American who is middle of the road politically would be on our right wing. We don't really want our politics to shift further right.
NATO would be loath to lose their nuclear shield, but they are not completely without teeth. Between the UK and France, they can field nearly 500 nuclear warheads. That is not close to America's arsenal, but certainly enough to render Russia a smoldering ruin. NATO would also be highly reluctant to become involved in a strictly internal matter. About the only thing that might trigger NATO's involvement would be if it spilled over into Canada and the Canadian government appealed for support. This might also trigger OAS and Commonwealth support.
Other things to consider, Canada's military is small and Americans like to joke, in ignorance, about it. We have among the best trained infantry in the world. If you need confirmation of Canada's training, take a look at the top 10 list for distance sniper kills. 3 of the top 5 are Canadian soldiers. Canada has a reputation of peace and happiness, but that's not the reputation that we had during any war that we have fought in. The Germans considered Canadian soldiers to be the elite of the opposing forces. In Italy, during WW2, they watched for where the Canadians were deployed to be able to predict where the real offensive attack would be launched. Consider that a small warning about what might lie here, up north, should anyone get any funny ideas. Disrupt our hockey games and we stop apologizing. We apologize profusely afterward, but not during.
Prior to the 2020 election, my mother asked me what I thought the future would hold. I said that if Trump were to win, it would lead to a civil war in the US over the next few years. If he were to lose it would lead to a civil war sooner. That was my prediction, and I don't see anything yet to change that view.

As a Canadian, I have a different view on this topic. First off, I don't speak for all CDN's, These are my views. But I see a couple issues with your recommendations. If Canada being a part of NATO would align with the governing body of the U.S. then anyone seeking asylum in Canada would be considered deserters. Canada would be bound to detain and deport anyone entering the country if abiding by NATO membership. As a Canadian, I'm not sure I would be so welcoming to those coming up here. It was the ignorance of their own political system that led to the state the U.S. government became. A barrage of refugees into Canada would not benefit Canada but rather could cripple it financially. I'm all for helping those in need but you understand the concept of the lifeboat scenario. First and foremost, those with money should not just be rubber-stamped. They should need to go through the entire process just like everyone else. They should meet the requirements just like everyone else. Regarding relinquishing firearms at the border, I see this as a huge problem. Many refugees would be coming in with the strong belief that it is their right to own a gun and the American bravado ignores any other countries control over that 'right'.
To any Americans reading this. If you want to make this easy, for everyone on the planet, just get involved with your politics. Find out what you need to vote, when you need to vote and where you need to go well in advance. Learn about the people running for office and choose wisely not flippantly and definitely not at the last minute. Finally, elect a government that puts 'of the people, by the people, for the people' back into how your government works. Reverse citizens united, get money out of your politics. Get rid of tax breaks for ALL corporations. Actually, enforce the division between church and state. Right now I see more religion in U.S. politics than there is actually governing. And for heaven's sake get a handle on all the born-again Christian televangelists bullsh!t that does more harm to people's retirement income than any banker could.

As a Canadian, I guess the issue is how many American refugees / immigrants to allow in if it comes to this. We are 1/10th the population of the US, so allowing "millions" of Americans into Canada simply would be too many. Canada has historically been very generous in terms of our per capita of refugees (in many instances much more so than the USA), however one has to be realistic in terms of what our social infrastructure would support, not to mention housing. There's an eleven step process to immigrate to Canada. I think there'd be an uproar against the laxing of those steps. We've been taking refugees from every American military action while America doesn't take their share. Yet I know we'll take the high road and let refugees in as long as the guns don't come with them and they embrace our way of living. I've seen too many American vacationers come here and they are baffled by our way of life and don't understand why we do things the way we do. Most of the world vacations to experience different cultures and not try to enforce their own. . To come here would be to leave almost everything behind. Do they really want that?

I'm fairly confident in stating that the Americans who utterly disregard other cultures when vacationing are not the ones who will choose to seek asylum in Canada on the whole, at least not initially. Many of those groups are currently wearing red hats and spewing ultra-nationalistic garbage. They would likely be a part of the "rebel" side that will likely be fighting over the Southern and Western territories of the US. I suspect that those with enough foresight to seek safety up north will, at first at least, be those who are far more competent and sensitive to cultural differences. Personally, I've been wanting to emigrate to Canada for years, but family circumstances and a lack of savings have prevented it.

Canada & America have lived alongside one another for centuries
    America's population = 330 Million
    Canadian Population = 38 Million
Now, a lot of nice things are said about Canada.
What's NOT said .. "Canada's Immigration policy is weak"
Canada doesn't recognize a lot of degrees.
At ANY given time, in Canada, Your taxi driver could be WAY more educated than You.
When you can't practice the profession that feeds your family, because Canada will not recognize your bona fides .. You drive taxi or open a shop.
THIS is a huge reason WHY the Canadian population is smaller than California's.
    So, ALL that being said..
I just wanted to drive home this point: There is NO Canadian appetite to for a change in immigration.
EVEN if the shit hits the fan in the States.
I promise you, the HELP and kindness extended to Americans will be unparalleled
But, I do not see ANY movement on the weakening of immigration or asylum laws.
That doesn't sound Canadian AT - ALL.
America needs to BUY Trump off. - Pay the fool

Would expect EU leaders to be conferring with Canada in this kind of crisis prior even to official NATO position being given. Honestly, since 2016 the once-fringe discussions of a serious EU military force have become a LOT more mainstream. The USA positioned itself as a unique force in world politics and quite a lot of other nations accepted this status quo based on assurances of the US remaining, at least militarily, a non-aggressive force towards those in its sphere of influence. Since 2016 the USA has pissed all over this and nobody wants to be the next Rojava / Kabul / pick your (literal) battlefield.
