How different is a European buckler from the Persian "mini" separ? Does the crossed-strap grip make a real difference?
Also, is it possible to grip a rondel dagger along with the crossed straps of the separ? I know it's possible to grip other types of dagger with less substantial hilts which were common in the Middle east.

I don't know enough to make a definitive answer, but the smaller separ is pretty close in size to the European buckler I was using. They both vary quite a bit, of course. I think the main differences are the dome and the grip you mention. It is 100% possible and pretty easy to grip a dagger in the same hand as the strapping for a separ. I think the only thing that would interfere would be if it had really large rondels.

I just saw this video. Can I make a suggestion? When you strike don’t do that step back with your shield foot.
It was taught as something that was to do like in a drill like a kata type of thing.
However, we realized that people were not making a distinction between that drill and in practice.
      It is a big tell.
So we suggest just stepping forward and not pulling your foot back like that when actually fighting.
Either step back or step forward. If that makes sense.
To the other question about holding a rondel. Yes you can if you have a strapped separ. It was done in the region. Of course with a middle eastern type dagger, but if you only got a rondel then use it.

Id say they are pretty much equal - with difference of buckler having wooden body and steel boss which could be use in binds or as a boxer. Both well documented since late 13:th century.
