Hey, I'm nowhere near as good as you, but I want to share something that worked for me. I started playing chess a little over a year ago, and now I'm rated 1700 rapid. From what I've read online, that's somewhat fast. I was playing 20 minute rapid until around 700 elo solely because I was afraid of losing on time. Checking my archive, I was rated 737 when I decided to finally learn to manage my time and start playing 10 minute rapid. Now I'm checking the graph of my rapid rating overtime and it seems that when I made this change my rate of improvement increased. Just two months after, I hit 1200. A little over two months after that, I hit 1500. At this point my improvement slowed down, more because of personal stuff than because of my rating. It took me three months to hit 1600, and another two months to hit 1700. Anyway my point is that in my case, switching from playing 20 minute rapid to playing 10 minute rapid actually helped me get better faster
@@ay_jo7 i've just been playing one or two rapid games a day, and when i'm not able to do that i play bullet or blitz. i was 1300 when i joined an academy, and i now have a fide classical rating and a blitz rating, but they're both really low
I found out about the rating range thing about 3 months ago. My rating exploded from about 1600-2000 in a month and a half and then the same happened in all my time controls. Before it was tough to lose -10 per game and win +6
I've been using the -25 to +infinty range for a long time. Not only because of the reward, but because I believe that I get stronger if I challenge stronger opponents.
Hii, nice vid! I just watched your video from a year ago: Top 5 Chess books for Beginners (0-1200). Do you recommend to combine the first two books? So for example do 50 puzzles of the first book and after that some pages of the second book?
Awesome video with honestly great points. I think avoiding lower rated opponents is smart but I would never use that feature. I think it's shameful to avoid weaker opponents. I think a true chess player should be ready to face any challenge.
Interesting point! I see it as a numbers game not as an “I’m avoiding a weaker player” game. Just minimizing downside because if you do play a weaker player and you do lose, that’s -15 (worst case) which take 2-3 wins just to get back. And you feel terrible and angry, too. My point is, for people who want to grow their ratings, playing weaker opponents than you just is not efficient.
Interesting Argument! I think though it is more likely to forget you’re low on time and simply lose on time than be aware you cross that 10 second mark permanently every single time it happens.
@@thechessnerd If you were to look at the statistics for move accuracy seconds after the low time warning sound effect goes off, it would be off the charts terrible! Hanging your queen, blundering in general, accidental stalemates, missing mate in 2 and so on, are all by far the most common when the "fight or flight" response turns on in the brain after hearing the low time warning sound.
But all these things you're mentioning (Hanging your queen, blundering in general, accidental stalemates, missing mate in 2) are all better to do than to have your time at 0.00. So I'd say to start now and get used to it. Just my opinion and advice. @@cactu
@@thechessnerd I don't agree nor disagree with either of these statements. I think it can be quite useful but that's only for online chess. May cause issues in otb chess if you rely on it too much. Imo it'd be better to improve time management

What adjustment have you made to this setting please?

Great video. The rating range setting has really had an impact on my chess enjoyment and improvement.
Thank you!
Thank you for this! Struggling against a player 300 points higher can be so demoralising when you’re a beginner.
One time I was 700 elo and was playing with a 900 elo player and suprisingly I won. Even the 900 elo player said that I was very good.
I've been using the -25 to +infinty range for a long time.

Amazing video! Never seen a video before to adjust settings like this!
Alright, this seems so obvious, but I did not do it until now. Actually helped. Thanks man.

How much should I play if I want to improve in chess. Should I restrict myself to only one game a day or should I go on playing as long as I enjoy?

If you’re playing with increment it’s less of a stress inducing noise and more a reminder that you need to bank more seconds
