- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 มิ.ย. 2024
- In this Range Report I am given the opportunity to shoot and review what some people think is a "Holy Grail" gun. This firearm is a Mateba Model 6 Unica Autorevolver chambered in .357 Magnum. This gun blends a revolver with the action of a semi-automatic pistol to create a unique and one of a kind gun. These were made for only a few years and are now considered to be very rare here in the U.S.. This video documents my personal thoughts, opinions and experiences with this unique firearm. Yours may vary.

More revolvers need to use the bottom of the cylinder barrel configuration.
I agree completely!
Doesn't Chiappa already do that today?
@@johnlloyddy7016 Yes.
@@johnlloyddy7016 Literally the one anyone knows.
@@johnlloyddy7016 chiappa rhino was designed by the same guy who did the mateba revolvers
My favorite gun from Ghost in the Shell and GitS SAC and Individual Eleven. Very very cool piece of kit
Thank you! Wait until you see the other models of these I have reviewed. Those will be coming out soon.
Togusa has entered the comment section....lol
Togusa carries a 2006M (called the M2007 in the show), which isn't semiauto. It is frequently misidentified as the Unica. Even the GITS wiki has it incorrectly identified.
Has a "Star Wars " look. Opponents may think its not shooting regular bullets, giving psychological advantages.
I love Star Wars.
@@thetexasgunvault I've never seen this Mateba w/ this finish. Usually they are always blued.
I would say Bladerunner....
No.
However, these DO :
- Browning Buck Mark Plus Vision
- Ruger Mark IV 22/45 Lite Stormtrooper
I am italian, perfect explanation of "6 unica"
Thank you so much!
Yep. Nailed it. I wrote about mine in .454 on The Firearm Blog, had to clarify that detail upfront as many just say "Unica Six".
in the early 20th century there was the Webley-Fosbery "automatic" revolver. very good range report. thanks.
Yes there was, but these are a little different.
@@thetexasgunvault And a Mauser.
This video should take off in views, it's so unique and interesting I've never seen this one before on YT or the Internet period. The operation of both revolver and the that "slide action" is just amazingly interesting. It's definitely a beefy revolver but dang it's pretty cool!! Thanks to Jack and you for sharing this with us!!
Thank you so much! I have a few more videos coming out soon on other Mateba models too.
I love odd and different firearms. Not great for CC or home defense but definitely a conversation starter and fun and different entertainment.
I like the mechanics of guns like this.
You are one of the few people to go this deep into the lore and function and then shoot it. Seems like an incredible piece for high end shooting. I respect the genius behind thing.
I try my best. I am more interested in the mechanics of firearms than anything else.
Love my Chiappas , but you can’t win them all. We will probably read about this 20 years from now as a failed concept.
It, also, us Togusa's Gun in the original 'Ghost in the Shell" manga.
I have heard that.
It was actually the Mateba 2006m, the Unica did not exist yet at the time of publication or the original film. He did use the Unica in the GITS stand alone complex series.
@@gromcomando It's a cartoon Batou San. It can be what he wants it to be. Remember it is set in the future. Can I have some natural oil please now Batou San?
@clangerbasher actually it can't. If it uses real world gun as its model, then that's what I uses.
@@PrayingPanda Oh...........Bore off.
Its That Gun!
Yes it is!
Pretty sure That Gun is Deckers blaster from Bladerunner. Just in 5.56 lol at least if we are talking about Fallout anyway
I actually had a guns and ammo magazine back in the early 2000s with that gun in it but it was neat to see it again and how it works thanks
Back in the day. I came across a good deal on a Ford SHO. My track buddy had a 5.0 mustang new. Same year. I outrun him like he was broken on the track every time. The brakes and suspension were clearly better than the mustang, even though they were the same straight line performance.
I thought the SHO was ugly, but I came around to actually like how it looked. Funny how that happens when something performs exceptionally.
That is a really good analogy.
its like the webley foserby kinda! very cool
Yes it is!
Funny how some people think it's ugly & others think it's a thing of beauty. I think it's a beauty & a marvel at the same time. Sort of like the Bugatti of pistols,And like the Bugatti out of my price range.
I really like your analogy!
I have been hunting for the 454 mateba, for quite a long time.
Always wanted one.
Those are super rare.
@@thetexasgunvaultI have one, in Italy. You can read about it on TFB. By the way, the front sight has both windage and elevation adjustments, the latter from the large screw just before the sight. The reason behind the adjustments on the front sight is the fact that the it's a modular system where the user can replace the barrel with others of different lenght.
@@thetexasgunvault on the adjustment: you can tell the front sight assembly is held in place by two roll pins, it is hinged on the back and the screw in the middle can raise or lower the post.
@@GiolliJoker How much do they cost in Italy?
@@justinkase1360 they are no longer manufactured. 20 years ago they were about the equivalent of $ 1,500. I don't know the current market value.
That's crazy cool. Never seen a firearm like that b4!
It is very unique for sure.
I love it looks so futuristic
It is like nothing else.
this is so cool, the weapon. Thank you for the video
You are very welcome!
Every year they are getting closer and closer to Vash The Stampede's revolver from Trigun...
LOL, true.
It was released in 1997 and produced up to 2005. Emilio Ghisoni died in 2008.
That was one of the animes that got me into guns, growing up is learning full length rifles do a better job than handcannon revolvers unfortunately.
I need to put hands on one and fire it. Very interesting, and cool piece of work . Thank's for posting.
You are very welcome!
Been wanting a unica 6 since i was in highschool around 2010. One of the coolest revolvers. Prefer the 4 or 5 inch moddel. I know the rhino exists but its just not the same and does not look nearly as good.
I agree completely.
That thing is so cool!
Yes it is. There is very few things like it.
This thing just looks accurate as hell. Great looking gun!
It is a lot of fun to shoot. Thank you!
Super cool revolver.
Yes it is!
The front sight is fully adjustable for left, right,up, and down
Yeah, I figured that out when I reviewed the .44 Mag version.
Very interesting. Love the ingenuity
Yes it is. I find it so fascinating.
It's completely mesmerizing. I love revolvers to begin with but this thing is unbelievable
One of the 2 unicorn auto revolvers. It is definately a beautiful piece.
Thank you so much and I am glad you enjoyed the video.
the mateba 2006m is one of my dream revolvers, just a awesome weird handgun.
It is such an oddity. I can see why so many people are interested in the design.
I've wanted one of these for many, many years.
They are very cool and very collectible.
The lack of recoil is surreal.
It was surprising to say the least.
The design looks to be a good one for interchangeable barrels.
They are.
I came within 50 bux difference in making a deal on one of these 25 years ago, now i kick myself in the ass ever time i see one. Now they are unobtainium
It is the ones that got away that we always regret.
All the size, weight and non-concealability of a Big Iron revolver combined with all the complexity and fail points of a semi-auto. Fantastic.
It is just an interesting and historical curiosity.
"fail points of a semi-auto"
The "semi-auto" part really only does one thing: cock the hammer. The reciprocating action isn't required to feed the next cartridge into the chamber (or in this case, advance the cylinder). That's done via the hammer which can still be actuated with the double action trigger.
It is an interesting take on the slide.
Instead of having the barrel tilt or part of the gun open like a rifle, the entire upper moves as a slide, which is great, since the slide is never heavy enough
I agree.
17:30 Was anyone else stuck looking at that "3" on the lane to the left? Something about it is entrancing. It's beautiful...
Whoever drew that must have exquisite penmanship.
LOL
Very cool bro
Thank you so much!
Love and peace! ✌🏻
Thank you!
that front sight looks like it pivots at the back to give elevation adjustment via the big screw on the top and windage on the side as stated
It does but I originally thought it was for simply holding on the sight.
Quite the tack driver!
I was not really knowing to expect when I shot it.
Very interesting, never seen something like this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ported barrels can blind you at night, adding significant time to a follow up shot.
Good point.
That front sight looks like it might be adjustable for elevation as well; it appears to be hollow in front and the tab the front sight blade sits on seems to slant upwards. Perhaps the screw on top of it is for adjusting elevation?
It is and I do adjust it on the next one I review.
Just by looking at it i think the big screw on top of the front sight would adjust your elevation
It does. Originally I thought it only held on the sight.
It's like a Webley-Fosbery, except sexier. Classic Italian dedign. ❤
Yep!
This revolver combines the low capacity of a revolver with the low reliability of a pistol in the event of ammunition failure.
It was made for target shooting.
It is still an interesting design.
You ain’t lying. I am happy it exists but I will stick with modern designs for revolvers. Especially with 7-8 round capacity.
Nice.
Ammo failure isn't a failure to cycle.
The cylinder still advances on the hammer cock. It doesn't depend on the "slide".
If you get a dud, just pull the trigger in double action.
Shades of the Webley Fosbery, another automatic revolver. As Col. Cooper said of the DA autoloader, it’s an ingenious solution to a nonexistent problem. But it is very cool. This gun begs to be featured in a steampunk movie. 😃
I agree with that 100%. It is still cool though.
I have to assume the first trigger pull helps to prevent accidental fires. Nothing short of an intentional action with a long follow.
You are probably right.
It seems the the Rhino makes more sense to me. I love mine anyway. The trigger is unbelievable for a revolver, double action and single action. Still a cool pistol you are shooting there. Thanks.
Thank you and yes I agree. The Rhino makes a lot of sense without the mechanical issues of this one.
@@thetexasgunvault and moon clips are a game changer. I guess they work for that pistol as well?
Pretty freakin' awesome. I've gotten to handle the .44 Magnum version but not shoot it. Very well made and the DA on that gun was heavy but not ridiculously so.
I reviewed the .44 magnum version too.
@@thetexasgunvault I'll be sure to watch that one too, then. Subscribed.
I have wanted this pistol ever since the og ghost in the shell came out .
I know that game made a whole generation aware of the gun.
A very interesting firearm. Thanks for sharing.
Was it the case with the 38 special ammo that it sometimes re-cocked the hammer without indexing the cylinder?
Does the front sight lower for adjustment? Looks like it may be on a hinge or jacking screw for elevation?
Yeah, I thought the screw was for holding on the sight. When I reviewed the .44 Mag version, I was able to adjust it.
Unique, New York 🤩
LOL, yep.
This gun might be plenty strong. But I think it should have a topstrap.
Fair point.
they come in .454 Casull, definitely don't need one
I'm not a big revolver person, but this is super interesting.
The design is very interesting.
Great video! Good information and quality. I personally wouldn't "rack the slide" like you did, since it places your finger in front of the cylinder. I'm no expert, but I believe that's slightly dangerous with revolvers.
Thank you so much and I am glad you enjoyed the video!
😮 congrats sir, you've achieved my dream
Thank you so much!
Im wondering if the barrel is pressed against something will it be taken out of battery like a striker fire or will it still function
That is a good question. I think it would depend on how far back it is pushed.
Crazy design, never seen a revolver with a slide before.
They are pretty cool and rare.
What is with the keyholing?
It could be the particular projectile weight I am using. There is no information on what this firearm prefers.
I have a longer version in 44mag, same finish but worse condition. It's neat.
They are so cool for sure.
Yeah the webley fosbury in the early 1900s did the same thing. They made it in a modern way.
Yes they did.
Apparently mateba is starting up again as a small manufacturer of 9mm ar clones for competition. God willing they’ll reproduce this amazing firearm.
I had not heard that! I will have to look into it.
@@thetexasgunvault Hop on the cope train! There've been "rumors" for years about them spinning production of these back up. Never gonna happen unfortunately, Rhinos the best we got...
Apparently it's a scam. Just checked.
@@PrayingPanda it’s actually not a scam, they have an active Instagram page.
@@PrayingPandait’s not a scam, they have an active Instagram page with authorization from the Italian government to export firearms.
Good morning, Jason, an interesting and eclectic choice, and I agree WOW. That gun shoots way better than the chap holding it. My question is, will it run on 38special rounds. Cheers
Yes, with a spring change.
It could be further trimmed in bulk...but looks mechanically viable..
It just needs a little refinement.
I can just imagine what hell you'll have to go through if a part breaks.
Yeah, it is why I was being gentle with it.
I really want the matabo multi caliber they put out years ago, i can't afford that gem but definitely want it.
You mean the Medusa M47?
M a t e b o
❤️ the W5TGV! 73!
Thank you! 73!
It’s so ugly it’s beautiful. It’ll never be mistaken for anything else………ok maybe the chiappa, but still, very cool. Love firearms that are different and unique.
I think that is well said!
At 25:01 in the vid, the fat screw on the front sight looks like it adjust elevation. Screw it down to rase POI.
Yeah. Originally I thought that just held the sight on. When I reviewed the .44 Mag version I talk about my mistake.
I would buy one.
I wish they would make them again.
I want to see if, like a pistol - pressing the "slide" while cocked can easily block the trigger. I will still love the gun if so - I still love many pistols, just interested if it has that similar flaw.
That is a good question. I no longer have this in for review so I can not test it. I am sorry.
If you use .38 special, will it function as a straight single action by cocking the hammer with every shot?
Yes, but it will not work well and may cause an internal issue.
Put a set trigger on it, cover the hammer and you get a dead ringer for a Bladerunner gun.
I can see that!
That was cool with 38 special. You just have to calk the hammer like a single action. So what that's not a problem it's a strength !!!!😃😃😃😃
Exactly!
There is a screw right below the rear sight would be in front of the hammer. Wouldn't that be the rear sight elevation?
You are right. I released that when I reviewed the 44 Mag version. I originally thought this screw just held on the front sight.
I swear to God I'd do unspeakable things to find and own the .454 casull version in the states. They are stupid rare, loved my Chiappa Rhino I've owned for about 10 years.
Those are pretty rare and really cool for sure!
I would never use one as a carry gun. Not because it'd be bad, but because if I would ever need it I don't want such a rare piece to end up stuck in evidence lockup for a few years.
I agree with you 100%!
How does it index? What does the ejector look like?
What do you want to know about the indexing? It appears solid and does not move at all when locked up.
@@thetexasgunvault thanks for asking but I watched a forgotten weapons video that explained that there is a pin in the breech face that indexes into the rear of the cylinder instead of a notch on the outside of the cylinder.
I also saw the ejector rod on an open cylinder in that video.
Webley and Mauser made auto-revolvers. Not like that one of course. They were more than a hundred years ago.
They were ahead of their time.
It's a Webley-Fosberry in satin steel for the 21st century...
It draws inspiration from it no doubt.
I have never loaded a revolver with the hammer cocked. I would have to go out of my way get to that start point.
I just think with a auto revolver it might be an option, just to make it like a semi-auto more.
Wow - a semi-automatic revolver! 👀... Who would've thought? It may not be pretty (imo) - but you won't have any problem with followup shots with it! 😄
Very true!
A simple, reliable revolver with the inverted bore axis would serve a purpose.
I completely agree.
Due to the high DA trigger pull, can it be safely carried cocked and locked like a 1911?
It wouldn’t be double action if it’s already cocked.
It does not have a safety, so with the hammer down it is like any other DA revolver.
Did your mom drop you on your head?
I think that the gun may favour a different load. The accuracy is certainly less than I'd hope for. By comparison I've used a S&W 6 inch stainless underlugged to break static clays at 20+ yards. This borrowed gun used a handload developed by its owner and was easy to shoot well.
It's not his gun so he couldn't adjust the sight. I noticed the front sight was very high and I think that is where it's adjusted.
Yeah, I could adjust the sights more. You get a lot of options with it.
The lack of muzzle rise is kinda crazy to see. It's like, I know about all the things that should help with it (bore location, comp, etc.), but It's still so much more effective than i'd expected. :o
It was such an odd experience.
Never saw anything like this.
It is unique for sure.
4-5lbs for a SA revolver trigger is pretty good if you could afford to carry it. Not so light that you might accidentally pull the trigger in a high stress scenario.
That is very true.
Looked like the front blade had a screw on top for elevation
You are right.
It appears to combine the reliability of a 357 revolver with the recoil of a 22.
Yes it does!
Mateba is the best.
They seem really nice.
I cut my teeth on a Model 19 Smith when I joined the PD in 1973 it looks like it would have been a nice replacement carry gun, but I think I would just stick to my Sig in .45 ACP.
I think that would be a good choice too.
It is unique, awesome and beautiful.
Yes it is! Wait until you see the others ones I get to shoot and review as well.
. It is a very beautiful firearm. The gap between the grip panels and frame is a perfect design element.
What if this had 6 round cylinder of .460 S&W Magnum instead?? 😍
I am sure it would work if designed for it.
Where do you put the CO2 into it?
LOL, it is a real firearm.
I'm sure these were really expensive when they came out but what's sad is if these came out more recently I would imagine they would've sold well may still be in production. The internet has really changed things for the 2A community which is why the establishment is going after TH-cam and attacking gun content.
Yes on all counts.
Whys the 5th round have al the muzzle flash but the 1st 4 have none.
That might have a little to do with my camera and the frame rate.
Might be cool for a hit man, no shell casings. Seems too heavy for ccw.
I think that is very true.
Interesting gun. I'm not sure the point of recoil operated revolvers but to each their own! If the gun is usable, functional and reliable that's all that counts at the end of the day. People get to hung up on how guns look and that's how the whole anti ar-15 movement started in the mid 1990s. Media dubbed them and certain other military type long guns as "black rifles", inferring more danger due to appearance.
I think you make a great point!
