the audiobooks are reliable sources to go to, they embody the characters into such vivid, almost movie like voice interpretations. The only thing critiquing the fact of audiobooks themselves is that in most cases, the auditor reading will interpret a certain line wrong or different from how you would interpret a characters line. for instance, when Daisy mentions Gatsby and the "Gatsby, what gatsby?" line appears, some would interepret the line as if Daisy never knew of Gatsby and some would interpret the line as if she did know him; the 2013 Great Gatsby film gives way for that.

The end was very bittersweet but beautifully written none the less. If this comment finds you i recommend you listen to this at a slower pace and meditate on the writing to digest its true meaning and when you finish it i can assure that you will appreciate this literary classic.

    • @strongback6550

To be fair, Gatsby was also a total shitbird for trying to break up a marriage like that. He chased a mediocre woman with a mediocre man and thought he had the right to destroy their marriage by making himself into a man Daisy would fall in love with.
Had she said yes, the next man to come along and seduce her would be entirely within his rights to do so.
Furthermore, he seemed to acquire his wealth through criminal enterprise and in spite of being a desirable bachelor of both wealth and means, he still retained the obsessive goal of trying to get this one specific woman whom he kept pining for in spite of her already living in a perfectly adequate wedlock.

    • @Twitt123
      @Twitt123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

@@strongback6550 To be fair Tom was cheating on Daisy so their marriage wasnt adequate to begin with eventually destructive tendencies have destructive consequences. And Gatsby was haunted by a love that abruptly ended so in order to make up for lost time he decided the only way to gain Daisy's attention was to uphold this facade of wealth. And its also a very good narrative on culture that still holds up to this day. It is very difficult to become wealthy without the use of ill gotten gains. So in Gatsby's grand plan to get Daisy back he needed to become wealthy and fast even if it was immoral. I dont believe that anything Gatsby did in the book was ever enough to constitute his fate. Tom and Daisy both knew who was driving the vehicle when it struck Tom' s mistress and their silence when it mattered most was more than enough to condemn their characters. I also believe Gatsby was a good man beneath all the lying he was just a disillusioned man haunted by a love he could never have.

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave
me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever
    since.
“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just
remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”
He didn’t say any more, but we’ve always been unusually
communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he
meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up

2:45:49 is beginning of my favorite quote. Watch for about 30 seconds though, right after it cuts off is my actual favorite line, about how he talked a lot about the past, like he was trying to get back a part of himself that had gone into loving Daisy. I'm currently in a very similar situation, minus the extravagence. My girlfriend broke up with me last Summer and every part of me wants to go back to her, but I know it's not the same. I just miss that relationship and that part of myself, which is something I couldn't get back even if we dated again. The problem is knowing doesn't make me miss her any less

Born into a middle-class family in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald was raised primarily in New York state.
He attended Princeton University, where he befriended future literary critic Edmund Wilson.
Owing to a failed romantic relationship with Chicago socialite Ginevra King, he dropped out in 1917 to join the United States Army during World War I.
While stationed in Alabama, he met Zelda Sayre, a Southern debutante who belonged to Montgomery's exclusive country-club set.
Although she initially rejected Fitzgerald's marriage proposal due to his lack of financial prospects, Zelda agreed to marry him after he published the commercially successful This Side of Paradise (1920).
The novel became a cultural sensation and cemented his reputation as one of the eminent writers of the decade.

"I want you and Daisy to "come" over to my house," he said. "I'd like to show her around."
"You're sure you want me to "come"?"
    "Absolutely, old sport."
Daisy went upstairs to wash her face--too late I thought with humiliation of my towels--while Gatsby and I waited on the lawn.

I'm usually a really good reader I read Gone with the wind, Jane Eyre, grapes of wrath, the architecture of belief and understood them very well, but for some damn reason I can't read this book at all, like my comprehension disappears. So here I am, and surprisingly I understand it.

Thank you for this. I’m a senior in high school and have a month left and I have to read this for English. If it weren’t for this audio book I would never of finished reading. Thank you a million 🙏
