      My 2005 E46 M3 has a 8200 RPM redline with a (very expensive!) Mustang Dyno tune and no cats. Naturallyy aspirated but still A real blast to drive.
      Amazing car on a real race track like Sebring in Florida.
      Forgot to mention the $30,000 in brakes, brake pads, and suspension upgrades.

      Bwahahaha!
      Just for peace of mind, I paid $900 to have my Vanos disassembled. I had new Viton solonoid o- rings added. I upgraded all the bolts on the gears, and red Loctited and torqued to proper specs.
      75000 miles on my motor, and my Vanos is almost silent. The motor does not burn a drop of oil either. The Rings Are is Tight as new .
      I use an additive called Liqui moly Ceratec to keep my connecting rod bearings in good shape.
      I also use full synthetic Liqui Moly oil 10-60 weight.

  • @zurnaik
    @zurnaik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Quite a labor intensive process of you compar to some of the more modern "engine production" videos. Having to measure and adjust those tiny shims is tedious but also needs a degree of skill. Also needing to manually time the engine and build the attachment of the Vanos unit is not straightforward. Much cheaper now to have unskilled workers snap plastic parts together on a production line!

    • @soundseeker63
      @soundseeker63 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed it is cheaper - And thats what these modern turbo engines with plastic used in every possible place will never last as long or be as durable as these old engines from the 90s and early 00s. Cheaper for the manufacturer it maybe, but cheaper for the owner, especially long tern, probably not.

      @@jamesmedina2062 i wouldn't think about cost of block itself, as E46 M3 were top of the price range of 3 series and cheaper E46s with M52TU and M54 had alloy block with iron cylinder liners.

    A great engine, such a shame they didn’t reduce the weight of the E46 M3 they really are too heavy as std to fully exploit the engine. Should have been around 1300kg not 1560kg ish. I sold mine, too heavy on tyres and breaks and not nimble enough due to the weight, loved the engine though.

      Probably torqued the cam caps out of sequence. Not that they don't have the tooling in the factory but if you've even done cams on these cars without the special tools theres a "sweet spot" that you have to utilize or else you'll bind the caps, or worse, snap the cams. They're hollow so one has to be extremely careful to tighten down the caps little by little and alternate.... kinda seems like a few parts in the video were definitely skipped over on purpose. Either way s54's are awesome

    I´d like to join the conversation about how different the AMG and BMW M engines are build. First diference that we haven´t to talk about that the engines made by AMG are more "manufactured". That why every one of them has a badge with the signature of the person who build it and BMW M engines don´t. But what I as a BMW fan noticed is that first of all the 3.2 litre engine is the engine of the pre-pre-M3 (E46). And second the oil cap at the end indicates that this is filmed between February 2004 and end of production in 2006. So I think that it is fair to say that this is filmed ten years ago and we can be shure that AMG engines will still be manufactured as shown in ny video but nobody knows how the M engines are build nowadays. Speaking of a more handbuilt engine it is fair to say that AMG still wins but speaking about mounting them carefuly nobody knows. MikeVonDoom rct5r

    Should pay a little more attention to the installation. Too busy schedule or engineer does not understand what he is going to do.

    For all the rod bearing comedians, I took my bearings out at 120k miles just last month, and could have easily done another 30k on them.

    • @keks-69
      @keks-69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't. The firing order on this engine is as follows: 1-5-3-6-2-4.

      One of them is at TDC after compression stroke, the other is just finished with the exhaust stroke.
      4-stroke 101.
