  • This morning when I got to the lake to check on Syd and Wilma I found Syd on egg guarding duty, while Wilma enjoyed a swim and feed. When a pen is incubating eggs, she will spend 99.5% of her time on the nest so people often mistakenly believe she isn’t feeding so throw food onto the nest - and this is how predators are attracted and eggs put at risk, like the rat we saw inside Wilma’s nest yesterday!
While Wilma was swimming, I tried to see how many eggs were in the nest and could only see seven which was worrying as I knew there were eight before. The ratty visitor was weighing on my mind.
Evening visit, Wilma was calm and relaxed with Wilma in her usual place and Sydney on the bank happily waddling over to greet me.
After feeding the swans and a few mallards, I headed over towards the geese and got the most amazing greeting as they all flew over to see me, so special!
There are two greylag families now, one with four fluffs and one with five. This evening I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time up close with the family of five and the fluffies all came really close to me before mum and dad actually wandered off and left them with me - that’s trust, greylags are so timid and distrustful, yet these proud parents were relaxed enough with me there to walk away and leave their new fluffs with me… so special and relaxing, but then two new swans flew in! Well it would have been three but the third one had the sense to keep flying…
Oh, there are still eight eggs!
