Video interview with vocalist Floor Jansen from the Finnish metal band Nightwish. FaceCulture spoke with Floor about living in Finland, adapting to the culture, being away from family and friends, not doing any songwriting, her creative input on this album, the band vibe on this album, identifying with the topics, giving them your own twist, evolution theory, the heavier songs, what makes a person tick, doing what the song is asking for, being challenged in her vocals, what being with Nightwish taught her, the previous times with After Forever and her other band ReVamp and a lot more! (12/2/2015).

Usually I try to avoid interviews because part of me is always a bit afraid that I'll find out that a musician or celebrity I really like is actually a huge asshole or whatever. But I swear the more of these interviews I watched the more I found myself liking Floor. Very classy and down to earth. Intelligent answers and beautiful smile too ^^

Well, I've watched some Marco interviews, a couple with Floor, and he is a really kind, friendly dude too.

Floor is 100% lady! I'm not sure I'm even the same species as her. I'm much older, but no way near as mature as her. She's very beautiful, intelligent and well spoken

    • @Zoza15
      @Zoza15 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

That's the misconception you make about maturity..
If you are on camera doing an interview yes you have to act professional for people to like you..
Including Floor, Floor is not perfect, she is as much as human like the other person. But Floor just happened to be talented in her vocals.
But everyone has their ups and downs and bad habits in their personal lives..
So what i'm trying to say is, don't think less of yourself compared to others.
Don't even compare yourself to others period!.

What a woman!! Beautiful, emotional, intelligent, humble, kind, considerate, inquisitive, funny, I could go on and on. Best decision Nightwish made post-Tarja was to bring Floor into the band. She has revitalized them.

I first heard Floor back when I lived in the Netherlands and After Forever came hot on the heels of Within Temptation. I really liked her but after I moved back to Denmark, she vanished of my radar. Imagine my surprise when I realised she was the new singer in Nightwish. Great singer and the new album is amazing. And, she's incredibly hot as well. ;)

I thought The Netherlands was crowded but I had no idea XD We have about 17 million in this small country xD Yeah true, when there is snow in this country, everything dies/stops working XD I am very curious to the sauna rituals and the Christmas rituals in Finland now :3 (I wish I had space and money for a sauna at home T^T) I do think that regarding Christmas, it's a bit more f the 'older' rituals, like before Christianity took over and it's now known as Christmas. Beforehand, there were Yule trees, bonfires, krampus instead of santa claus and many more little things I am sure but I am getting quite curious here :3

I thought maybe there were possible places the interviewer stumbled because maybe she was a little nervous or star struck?
I thought Floor was just so gracious throughout the interview.
The interviewer asked one question I always find amusing as a writer myself when people ask, "where do your ideas come from?"
The reality for most writers is we don't often know where the ideas come from typically, they just come.
And sometimes even the most mundane ordinary things that might not even register on someone else's radar will loom large on our radar and will inspire something in us that non-writers might not even notice.
I think we observe and often perceive the world differently as writers. I know I do.
But the truth is I don't always know what will inspire me to write, or what will trigger my imagination.
      Sometimes nothing does.
Sometimes, it feels like everything does.
A lot of it can depend on where I'm at emotionally, too.
When my emotions are relaxed and under control and not feeling like they're spinning out of my control, I seem to write a bit less frequently because I don't feel in turmoil.
When my emotions are in more of an uproar or are a bit tumultuous, I am often more receptive to creative inspiration because my emotions are already in a heightened state of sensitivity and awareness.
Beyond that? It's hard to say.
Because the creative process is different for everyone, we really just don't know what will inspire us.
I found it interesting that Floor finds being happy more inspiring for her creative process.
Sadness and emotional vulnerability seem to inspire my muse more often. As I noted, I write a bit less when my life doesn't feel like it's in as much upheaval.
Songs or poems, anyway. Writing like this I do almost daily and don't need to be in a state of hyper sensitivity to write or voice opinions or philosophies particularly.
But, for me, writing lyrics for songs or poems I tend to be more inspired when the emotions are more raw.
And in THAT state of heightened or hyper emotional awareness, almost everything is inspirational.
My favorite stories about my own occasionally warped inspiration perception would probably baffle others who don't see things the same way.
I worked at Walmat in Brea California for a few years.
A coworker once asked me to ring up his purchase and I said sure.
He only had two things: a multi-pack of tank tops and a music CD.
There were 7 tank tops, and they were the white ones you so often see guys or gals wearing on episodes of Cops.
And for a while, they were known colloquially as wife-beaters.
And I said "Seven wife-beaters and an Al Green CD. That sounds like the title of a country western song."
And of course I wrote it a bit later after work. ☺
Another time I had just finished showering and was hunting around the bathroom looking for Q-tips.
I opened one drawer and found no Q-tips but a box of make-up remover that my now former fiance used to take off her make-up at night before she went to bed.
She and I were in the throes of concluding our relationship, which I could sense was impending but which I really didn't want to happen, either.
And when I saw that box of make-up remover pads, I said to myself "what I could use right now is some break-up remover."
So I wrote a song about wishing I had some break-up remover and how I hated getting it in my eyes because it always made me cry.
And two little otherwise mundane ordinary things just happened to inspire or triggered my creativity to kick in.
I usually try to keep a small notebook or notepad handy to write down inspirational thoughts when they occur to me because I want to remember them and because I never know when inspiration will strike, so I prefer to be ready for whenever it does.
But, that's just me and it is a different process for everyone.
And most of us can never be sure when or where inspiration will strike or what will trigger it because the process is so different for each of us.
I do think if we're not open to being inspired by anything and everything, we risk being inspired by nothing.

But even a Finnish teenager was able to get a better handle on English than I would have ever guessed, it was super impressive. Americans don't learn near enough foreign language.

The problem is that we use Finnish among ourselves.
Probably Nightwish band members use English as their working language, as Troy is English, and their previous vocalist was Swedish.

The band members all know English of course, but from what I’ve seen, they seem to speak Finnish to one another as well. Presumably unless speaking with Troy or Floor. So it’ll help herself out to at least understand Finnish even if she can’t speak it too well yet.

She actually looks really sad when she's asked about her own country and about missing the songwriting, but does not really seem to want to give the more vulnerable but more honest answer, which can be observed when simply looking at her facial expression. She used to have control in her previous bands, and now she's just another expandable puppet of Tuomas

Only between your own damn ears. She is smart enough to know the situation when she joined NW, and that is that Tuomas is the creative mastermidn behind the band, and does 99% of the songwriting, and she accepted that when she took the job, simple as that. If she really wanted to have full reign on songwriting, she would have simply said no, and continued on with ReVamp.

Now...!! You got the true Master of the vocal cords, an unlimited range in, the beautiful child Dutch goddess... Miss floor Jansen! Tharja and Annette both, were one-dimensional. Tarja only had a throaty monotone falsetta's sounding Opera only , vocal Style. And it just doesn't fit Nightwish to me. It's just strictly 2 Opera sounding. And yes there is a difference between classical and Opera. And if I didn't know what she looked like , I picture tarja a big heavy set woman with a Viking helmet on singing an opera ... That's it . But now, Annette... She has that Minnie Mouse, top 40 slash pop sound of vocals... Just didn't fit one-dimensional and no emotion whatsoever. Now, floor Jansen... Wow, what can you say anybody with a brain hasn't already said or thought?! Number 1 - Beauty , check! seductiveness and sensuous stage presence, check! Powerful vocals, check! Can go low or growl, check! Heavy Rock raspy Style Like Pat Benatar or Ann Wilson of heart, check! High notes and beautiful angelic vibrato and Grace of Celine Dion, check! As well as classically and Opera vocally trained, check! And the emotion she can put in a song oh, you will think that you were a part of the story as well as like in poet and the pendulum for instance... Could even get my six foot tall 200 pound ass manly man so to speak, to cry like a bitch, check, check and check!! Floor Jansen, is the reason that I am gridlock inphonite wish for the past couple of years or more. The musicianship oh, that's a gimme... There is no better as well as the master of a lyrical and music world, t u o m a s, well they're all on point all of the time. Jukka, evidently that serious medical case of insomnia is pretty bad. Because for the past four or five years, they've had winter Sun's drummer. But that couldn't hurt cuz he's a lot more technical and a badass himself. but he's a close friend of jukka, so either one of them would have hard feelings if or when it comes to an end. Anyway I never light night wishes vocals, so I passed them on pie every time I come across them playing or videos. But then...! Surfing the TH-cam check it out bands from different countries as I always do me being a drummer and all, I come across the jewel Festival, wacken 2013 and God the crowd look like ants, and who do I see on stage...? none other than the goddess with the angelical voice floor Jansen. let me tell you this, as a musician it's called a white elephant when talking about... The perfect set or gig. and any band will tell you there not guaranteed every time. To where everything and aspect from set up, sound, performing, xcetera, goes perfectly. But that show that night was put on at wacken 2013 when floor was just in the band a couple few months, and to be honest I didn't expect any less because I've loved her from after forever and revamp... She's about as professional as you can get on stage on the mic or anything to do with the show. and when she goes to telling a story with her seductive moves, flipping her hair, dancing, and the one aspect that Annette didn't seem to give a shit about her wardrobe, oh my God! would she come out on stage at that 2013 wacken looking like Xena Princess Warrior along with her leather cape... Holy shitballs Batman! She could put you, as a man anyway... In a trance in a snap quick in a hurry. Long story short - ish anyway, Nightwish... Like Metallica firing Dave Mustaine what's the best thing in the world, because we got Megadeth. Because like all that knows music, Megadeth is so much Superior of musicianship then that simpleton band Metallica. So thank you Lars Ulrich rich for that. But like that same situation, Nightwish thank you! Because you upgraded and there's so much more... Everything! You got graced by God himself by lending you one of his angels, so kudos, you just been upgraded to the penthouse suite at the top! and now because the floor, seems like everyday I got one have you guys to my head. So, thanks for making that change because every Nightwish song is like hearing it with fresh ears with floor Jansen

Not sure from where Floor got that evolution has been scientifically proven. It is still very much a theory with a whole bunch of wholes in it, that probably will never get resolved. Honestly, it takes more faith to believe in the evolution theory than in a God who has created everything. Having said that, I do love the album very much though.

Don't just assert that you know you saw a being and then provide no evidence. Also no one has to even care of there's a god or believe in one or believe in yours in particular. The god of the Bible in particular is a worthless piece of shit that I'll gladly spit in his face. As for the other gods , I cannot say, I've never studied them.

Often, there is great truth in our experiences. One that we shouldn't automatically dismiss. We don't have to "believe" it either. We can simply be open minded about it.

    • @RegginaAmaranto

It's not the theory that he believes that's hate mongering. It's the hours upon hours of podcasts, interviews and written books where he spreads hate against Christianity, as if the two beliefs were at war. He is doing his utmost to alienate people of faith and turn Christianity into an evil empire that he must convince us to destroy.... How's this for an idea, let everyone believe what they want and stop spreading hate just to line your pockets with book sales.

I'm pretty sure there was a point in history when the brightest minds in the world thought that our planet was flat. And only 70 or so years ago, everyone thought that the atom was the smallest thing in the world, until one of you opened it up to find all this crazy and even smaller shit. And you're gonna tell me you can't be wrong about evolution? Do you honestly believe you have several hundred million great grandparents, and that your first ones crawled out of the ocean? How does that NOT feel like a complete mockery of human intelligence?
