12 or 13 years ago I brought the bulbs I found on the landscaping outside the public restrooms in a beachpark on the north shore of Oahu island in Hawaii, to Florida. Purple and white. The occasional cold doesn't bother them, and they have really multiplied. Also they are about 7 feet tall. You are correct, once the (bulbs, seeds) are on the ground they start putting down roots. It killed me to see you throwing away all those bulbs. haha. I love it though, and I give away bulbs, seeds, baby plants all the way up to mature.. They have a really nice fragrance too, especially on a still evening, or morning. No care at all, God does all the work. I have a solid fence row now, plus here and there.
Lol..plant placement definitely makes a difference...having them close to my walk way, driveway and mailbox keep me busy keeping them to just a few plants...I really should try to save, share or sell them...as they are a very easy seed to gather. Cool that yours are looking good and giving you great privacy! Thanks for watching!
It is a beautiful plant and looks great along with he other varieties of plants that you have in your yard. Good to know that they are easy to take care of. Great video Heidi!
This really helped me. It can get frustrating trimming these. They were not something we planted and others neighbors are not huge monsters like ours. There aren't enough videos about the care of these plants.
Bravo for this video on the Giant Crinum Lily, your plants are very beautiful 100% Up ! for me it is very interesting :) I brought back a seed from Miami 5 years ago and it grows in Paris ! but I bring her home in winter because it's too cold for her outside -> Happy new year to you ! Tks again.
Thank you! What a great story! Happy New Year to you too! I look forward to making more content soon, I just had a minor surgery on my hand, so I will be back with more videos in the near future! Thanks again for the compliment!
Hi Heidi! My father passed away and his home put on the market. I brought back 1 start of his plant and some bulbs. I got 1 shot to get this right with replanting. I want to know the proper way to plant the bulbs. Do I open and take the seed out, let it dry, plant the whole bulb? I can't seem to find the correct answer anywhere. Thanks for any help you can give.
Hi Patty, I am so sorry for your loss. A few questions? 1. Where was your father's house? 2. Where do you live or plan to plant this bulb? Typically a bulb falls on soil and sprouts from there. Do not break open the bulb. I would get some good potting soil and bury it 1/3 the way, horizontal. Make sure the potting soil is pre soaked for moisture. Set the bulb on there and mist or water when the dry to first knuckle. You can also create an atrium like atmosphere with a 2 liter clear plastic bottle..once the seed sprouts and you see some growth, you can remove the bottle and mist lightly and water from the bottom...your Zone and location will determine final recommendations
@@GardeningWithHeidi thanks! He lived in Okeechobee and I live in Destin. The bulbs were still attached and purple and I pulled them off of one of the plants.
Chenille plant I believe, it is more red than purple, so I believe that is it...there is also Mexician Petunia, that is purple, but not in full bloom in this video
@@GardeningWithHeidi Heidi, Thank you for taking the time. I kept looking and eventually found it. It's one of five very similar plants, "cordyline fruticosa (L)" Broadleaf Palm Lilly. It was the sectional stem that was tough to find. Again, thank you and God bless you!
Hi Michelle, just try to cut the leaf where it was bent...the plant needs to make food to make new leavesn then remove them as new growth occurs about 3 at minimum.I have however cut mine totally to the ground and a sprout has grown, but with that much exposure, disease could creep in
Yes, but with any transplant there is a chance it doesn't move well. I literally threw 3 bulbs on the ground where I wanted a new plant and voila...it took with no help other than timer irrigation once a week
Do you have an email so maybe u can tell me what lily I used to have lol i have the ones in video now that replaced my old ones so thanks for video. Also do you have issues with spider mites. Mine stays with them.
My guess is too cold or too dry to wet...the spots may be from an insect. Look underneath the leaves. Just cut off the bad leaves and make sure to sterilize your tools with isopropyl alcohol 90% if possible. A general fertilizer or some worm castings may help to.
That is a good point, however I just don't have the landscape design to manage that amount of yard waste. I don't want to start breeding too many cockroaches so close to my house and neighbors. I am going to add an area with Bananas and these may be a good chop and drop plant to feed/mulch them though. I do compost all my kitchen scraps 😀 I have also started to even take some of my areca fronds to my other garden for natural mulch as they don't break down fast.
I don't do anything special for winter care as I am in Zone 10a. They have alot of water in them, so I would think they are susceptible to freeze temps...surprisingly enough when a freeze hits in subtropical the best thing to do is irrigation during the temp drop...
@@GardeningWithHeidi I’m in 10a, I just moved to a new property and been wanting some these. I got some bulbs off a random plant couple days ago and wanted to know best way to start them. I have some large totes full of sand, sitting them on the sand or burying them knuckle deep is best? Or would they do better in soil? I have some soil and nursery pots I could use. I have over an acre to landscape and a bunch of these would look super nice so I’m wanting to do whatever will get me the best results.
@AmandaP0199 i would place them where you want them no need to start them and then transplant. Lay them on the ground. You could lightly cover them with some pine needles or leaf debris you find on your property, make sure they get some water it is so dry during winter if not on irrigation. Do 3 or more bulbs...super easy. You could start a few in the sand mixture as well just to see. Re.ember the pollen on the flower is toxic to cats so consider placement if you have them. Thanks for the comments. Bulbs are an easy score in places, good find!
@ Ok thanks. I don’t have irrigation and I’ve been using some old potting soil to backfill with when I plant something since it’s just pure sand here. So do I keep the bulbs just slightly damp or more moist, like swampy wet? I’ve planted some other plants recently so I’ve been watering them daily until they establish. So do I just water the bulbs daily as well?

Thank you. I did not know they are poisonous.
Do you fertilize? I moved to a home with a huge crinum one story tall with purple leaves. Crinums are new for me.
No, I do not. I have been mulching my yard for 18 years and the soil health is good. I love those purple ones!!!
Does that plant set any bulbs for you? Sounds like a cool variety!
