    Hi Hydi. Thanks for all the good info. I'm Glad your eye is okay. Sounds like something I would do. Most of my life. My Green Thumb has been GANGREEN THUMB. My house is where plants come to Die. But.... In the last 11 years I've managed to grow some things. I found that adding Miricale Grow seems to be the Trick to NOT KILLING THEM. I'm about to plant 12 Arecas behind my privacy fence. Do I need to ad Mirical Grow when I plant them? I wish I would have done this 11 years ago. Oh Well. Better Late than Never.

      Do not add fertilizer when you transplant it can burn the roots. You can find a palm specific fertilizer that is good to use early spring and after rainy season depending where you live. There are restrictions to be mindful of. No need to fertilize when they are dormant. Mulch around them and water should be good to go! Thanks for the comment!

    My son discovered this plant was edible when he was little and ate one of the leaves from a neighbors plant, and got chased away by him! 😅 My question is, what's the best way to prune this plant for better growth? Mine have tended to be puny and not bush out to much.

    • @SAROXBAND
      @SAROXBAND 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This used to happen to me till I started to prune savagely and periodically. Try to chose the crescent moon phase and place it where there is indirect sun. Prune without fear because where you prune that will branch out on every single node! Then take the larger leaves off so the plant can thicken and produce new leaves. This made mine produce flowers quicker than usual. Your first trim should be just the top 2/3 leaves so it thickens and starts to branch out. When it’s about 2 feet tall. Hope this helps! Oh, and mine are accompanied by Mexican sunflower for support and biomass.

    Very helpful video - enjoyed learning the history of these beautiful plants. I live on the southwest coast of Florida. About five years ago I planted two small Arecas next to my condo patio for privacy. They are now about 15-20 ft tall and are blocking the upstairs neighbor's view of the lake. I've been asked to trim them to a lower height, but not sure how to cut back the height without damaging the plants. Can I trim off some the higher frounds at the top or will I need to cut at the base of the trunks? This might be a job for a professional, but I wanted to make sure whoever I hire doesn't end up doing permanent damage. Thanks!

    Areca palms are not native and therefore not Florida friendly. They attract ants and rats and get too tall too fast and end up being very labor intensive to remove seed pods and fallen fronds. They are difficult to keep off roof lines if planted within 10 feet of a building. There are many alternatives that provide more food and habitat for birds, butterflies and bees as well as privacy. I do appreciate this video as it may help me get inspired to cut the big stalks down and be sure to wear eye protection. Thank you for posting.
