Have you ever gotten a new car or couch and just known because of the smell? That’s off gassing.
Some people love the smell of “new.”
It’s knowingly artificially yet somehow intoxicating.
Eventually, over time, that smell will fade, and you probably won’t think anything more about it.
But if you’ve ever wondered what that smell was, then you were wondering about off gassing.
Off gassing occurs when newly manufactured items release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals.
Here’s what you should know about off gassing.

Hi guys this is Erika from Gokce Capital. Now before I begin, be sure to click subscribe and turn on the notification bell. Bogdan Marion is lucky.
The Santa Cruz wildfire didn't destroy his home. Even still he's not out of danger. Why?
Well find out at the end of this video but first, if you plan to build or renovate a home be aware of off-grassing. In today's video, we have the top things you should know. Number one, what is off-grassing?
Off-grassing occurs when newly manufactured items release organic compounds called VOCs as well as other chemicals. Number two, what household products are off the gas? Some of the most common offenders include furnishings, mattresses, carpeting, vinyl flooring, wall paint, air fresheners, cleaning sprays, and flame retardants.
Number three, why off-grassing a problem? Well VOCS, when inhaled, have short and long-term health effects VOCS can include cancer as well as damage to the kidneys, liver, or central nervous system. Number four, what can you do to make sure you buy products that don't emit VOCs?
Well, today there are third-party certifications for household goods that can signify a product has low or no emissions. These certifications include green guard scientific certification systems and SGS group. In addition, you can select to buy solid wood furniture as opposed to furniture made from plywood or particle board.
When purchasing mattresses you can look for those made of organic cotton, chemical-free, or natural latex and of course, you can buy second-hand furniture since off-grassing does not last forever. Number five, though there may be health risks associated with off-grassing. This doesn't mean you should stop buying new furniture altogether.
Even if you buy products that off-gases there are a few things you can do to limit your exposure. Primarily you can let any new product off the gas in your garage for a few weeks. Alternatively, your furniture stair may let you off the gas on the product on site after you've painted your home.
Keep your windows open to let the VOCs air out. You can also buy an air purifier that will specifically filter our VOCS. Finally, you can add plants.
However, having said all this. There is one point of concern even after materials are in place and have ceased to off gas. They can still become a hazard.
Just consider Bogdan Marion Bogdan lives in Santa Cruz and in 2020 a wildfire swept through town. Many of his neighbors lost their homes but Bogdan was spared. However, this did not mean he and his family were out of the wood for immediately after the fire dissipated Bogdan's water distinct issued a do not drink.do not boil.
Notice this meant that Bogdan's water was so contaminated. It was not even safe to boil. It's a bit of a mystery but in recent years as the size and intensity of wildfires have increased California municipality water suppliers have noticed elevated levels of VOCs in drinking water.

Sadly, it seems that there are VOCs all around us, in our buildings and even our food. Perhaps the reason cancer is so prevalent.

I know, it's so hard to avoid them! It's really quite a problem.

It's crazy why we even make such things to use.

Thank you Erica, very informative. I am planning to change my Living Wood Flooring, so that's why I came to your video, as I will use Vinyl. Wow, lots of VOC sources. I love my plants, around 8 pots, and opening windows can minimize VOC.

That's a good suggestion! You may want to check out video on asbestos surveys, but let me know if there is another aspect of asbestos you think we should cover! th-cam.com/video/T_PFtButTtc/w-d-xo.html

Ooof, I'm so sorry to hear that. Perhaps try putting it in a corner of less-used room with all the windows open and the fans running.

@@GokceCapital I can’t, it’s a 10’ by 10’ sectional and won’t fit anywhere else. I went out and got a good HEPA air purifier with carbon filters. Hope that helps.
