    • @tylermills4812

      @@Adlata Mariah's first album was nowhere near "milk toast Disney soundtrack", it was heavily R&B, especially the album cuts. "Vision of Love" is straight-up '50s waltz gospel-pop. If you wanna call one of her albums white-washed, Music Box would be the closest to it. Her first album was straight up R&B. Goes to show how much you know, which is nothing. This was a VERY VERY volatile time in the music business.
    Between the Milli Vanilli scandal (and over-all lip-syncing criticism), the New Kids on the Block craze, the New Jack Swing crop of artists/trends, Mariah Carey's ultra-promoted "arrival" (the label's attempt at having a "Whitney Houston" voice with a euro-centric-looking female), the increasing trend on skinny models being in videos/commercials while heavier women provide the singing vocals, 80s hair bands being "played out", and just having so many other pop artists ruling the charts and MTV airwaves (Paula Abdul, Madonna, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Bobby Brown, NKOTB, etc.), there was an increasing sense that the entire pop music culture had lost all of its integrity; Producer-driven music from with glamour-focused TV darlings reaping all of the awards. I'm not in agreement with this statement, but I remember that that was the attitude from many people around this time period (1990-1991).
    Pop music's multi-billion dollar popularity was coming to a head and this led to much of the Gangsta Rap and Grunge rock scene which exploded within the next year!

      I actually agree with all of this, and I will add something else. While the Milli Vanni scandel was at its peak, the many artists who COULD sing tended to oversing in their songs for credibility from the public and among critics. While there were those who debuted in the late 80s/early 90s turned out to be very successful, by the time Gangsta Rap and Grunge Rock completely took over in 1992, the only pop stars that were left standing were MJ, Whitney, Madonna, Janet, Mariah, and Prince. Virtually everyone else got tossed aside, including phenomenal talents like George Michael (RIP), Jody Watley, Karyn White, and Terrence Trent D'Arby.

    • @blacknetsmed
      @blacknetsmed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@keandrebell-washington9904 George Michael? Nope he was not "casualty" of anything other than personal laziness or fatigue(he had 2 top 10 hits in '96). Jody and Karyn were casualty of the decline of NJS just like every NJS act who pretty much faded after '92. Terrence Trent Darby was an arrogant delusional twilight zone who's career was done before the Milli Vanillis and Paula Abduls even exploded onto the music scene. MJ popularity cooled tremendously in the '90s stateside. Some of that was his 1993 scandal, but some of that also was when grunge and gangsta came into the mainstream MJ lost a lot his 'cool factor'. He was too safe and too corny for the times. Prince also didn't make it into the '90s. His commercial viability outside one global smash hit in 1994 was pretty much done stateside. Only pop star that were legitimately left standing were the ladies Mariah/Janet/Madonna/Whitney.

    I love this. I wish more brothas would stand up and put they foot down the way my uncle Hev did right here. During this time, hip-hop was considered a fad that wouldn't last. It was 'noise.' White man comes in and it curiously becomes a 'rising art form.' Anyway, Mariah Carey definitely deserved to win. En Vogue's debut LP was so bomb. I'm somewhat familiar w/ Oleta Adams. In 1990/1991, I was just getting my feet wet learning about music. Mr. Johnny Gill was my favorite back then.

    I LOVE Oleta Adams, but I think (at the time) the label had marketed too many other "hot" acts to the young/teen crowd that damaged her chances at having more success, unfortunately. It's sad, because (IMO) she should have been JUST as big as Mariah.

      I agree.! You know you just don’t hear much about Oleta Adam’s. She is a great vocalist and in on of my favorite 80s ballads Woman In Chains with Tears for Fears. I think it’s odd that she was paired up with newer, almost pop like acts. I agree! I saw her at a local jazz club. I was stunned bc of how big her songs Like Get Me Here If You can. Don’t sleep on her. If you like Mariah ( who I love), then you’ll like Oleta Adam’s.

    • @blacknetsmed

      "she should have been JUST as big as Mariah"
      Realistically, in what world? Oleta Adams was 5 years older than Michael Jackson and Prince. MJ debuted in '69 and Prince debuted '78. She is 2 years older than Natalie Cole, who already been out in the mainstream for 12-13 years by 1989. Oleta Adams debuted with major record label backing in '89. She was TOO OLD to make a major dent in the Pop scene by that point.

      Ice may have sold lots of records at the time, but he was peddling around a fake biography that claimed that he was a Miami gangbanger. That made him look inauthentic, if not ridiculous in a traditionally black art form. If Ice had been more honest from the start about who he was and had not made so many career decisions that were just completely sellout like doing Ninja Turtles II and a doll and a live album and that godawful movie, it could have been different for him. But for Ice, it was ultimately about what got him money. His popularity eroded unusually quickly by the end of the year.

    • @amywinehoe
      @amywinehoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is old but, she started being forced to cover up after marrying Tommy Mottola in 1993. And she didn’t even dress that out there before like other artists… it was just Tommy’s insecurities coming through and him not letting Mariah express herself. Even though she was still under Tommy Mottola’s grasp during 1990-1992 she still had some freedom in the sense of how she presented herself, and it’s unfortunate she lost that later on until she freed herself from that awful man.

      perth45 When she was married to Tommy, he handled Mariah's career with a fist of iron, always telling her what to wear, what to sing, who to sing with. Rumour has it he was so jealous, he'd lock her up in their mansion when she wasn't performing, and he hated other men paying her compliments. Her new sexy image and R&B direction was a former of rebellion against Tommy, and I wouldn't say she was bland, but of course everyone ignored the new music to focus on what she wasn't wearing.

      Chandler I remember her being billed as a white singer who sang "black", just like Lisa Stansfield was in 1990, the year they both hit the charts. That was Tommy Mattola's doing. It wasn't until right after this show that she started saying she was mixed. Her thanking the audience for "Accepting her" in that way was proof she was playing the game for as long as she could. If she'd already established she was mixed, and she wrote and recorded R&B music, why would she think she wouldn't be accepted?

    I don't know why people here are apologizing for the Soul Train audience booing him. It was a combination of reasons he was booed. It was not only because he was White performing a musical form birthed in the Black community, but also because, as somebody here already mentioned, he turned out to be a complete fraud, and he used Black people as his backdrop. Vanilla Ice wasn't just happenstance. He was a foreshadow of what was to come. A symbol of the eventual takeover and co-opting of yet another Black art form. The record industry had wanted for decades to appropriate Black music and replace Black faces with White faces. In the early 1950s, record industry mogul Sam Phillips was quoted as saying " if I could find a white boy who could sing like a black man I'd make a million dollars." Phillips is the same dude who brought Elvis to stardom, and we all know Elvis was the quintessential Black culture appropriator. Vanilla Ice was that next attempt to completely shut out the originators of the music. So the primarily Black Soul Train crowd was on the mark with regard to how they felt. They weren't falling for the okie doke.
