Many authors are so fixated on creating a fully unique system that at some point it ceases to resemble magic at all
Glad to see "back to the roots" theme, there is something to see in the old teachings. After all, this "systems" is the ancestors of all magic systems in today's books, indirectly or directly

Yes, sometimes you don't need much more than a bit of creative insights from history with a unique spin and there you go.
I'm not against inventing entirely new things, far from it, but it still needs to feel grounded and authentic and a flair or real-world magic can certainly help with that.

I'm writing my Assyriology PhD and am running a "Mesopotamia-themed" Call of Cthulhu campaign set in Iraq. I'm going to throw Sumerian, late Babylonian, and Sufi magic at them - each tied to a PCs background. So I have to do a lot of reskinning... your magic vids are really inspiring for that, and made me realise how I can better utilise the magic systems!

Currently working on getting my worldbuilding series done which still has a few videos to go (Geography coming today most likely as the next video) and then I do want to look a bit deeper into magic for sure (which will be covered in the series too, but I do have some ideas about digging deeper into magic as a topic) :)

Know this, I’m by no means sticking to one genre of magic throughout my writing career.
In just three of my different series, I have three completely separate magic genres.
I have Natural energy manipulation in the Reincarnation series.
I have Runic magic in my Equilibrium series
And I have dragon blood magic (magic given by dragon blood) in my book “Trial of Dragons”.

Magic is actually a big thing for me right now. I've been expanding the world quite a lot, even started writing within it, but haven't settled fully on the depth and quantity of magic system(s) in the world so far. By now I'm reaching the limitation of whats possible to do without that decision. I'm probably not going to be able to get around multiple systems either based on the abilities of races and the legends surrounding certain things.

      @@TheTaleTinkerer that sounds legitimately fun.
It’s definitely quite a bit of effort, but it can still be very enjoyable.
I loved crafting my Reincarnation series’ magic system.
Planing out scenarios that will never happen, just so that I can imagine how magic could solve it, adjusting the limitations to perfection, it was fun.
And I hope to have just as much, if not more fun than that with my Equilibrium series’ runic magic system.

there is a magic system that i use and is inspired by western cultures and metaphysics, it is realign system that collect and combine thoughts of it user and with a key (like a bible) give them a general shape and rules then if user just draw or perform the ritual in bible like book if the energy given is significant the realign system will give it shape, this way you can make a event happen but also give it unpredictability and mysteries because although general out look is same but detail each time may differ. it also give it a natural enmities with black magic because it also use ritualistic magic and sometimes they could channel into realign system magic. and now that i am at it there is a book called 'white moon one the mountain peak' it about Chinese Daoist internal alchemy system if want to integrate Daoist system with your work it is realy helpfull .

you mean my own book or white moon peak? if you mean my own book then i have to say sorry it is not complete yet, i prepared powers systems, character and backstorys or background designs meticulously but when it come to plot twist i have to continually revise my designs, i don it five time, i hope it will get complete in the end of year, by the way it was the reason i typed two times to you to read reverend insanity i wanted to use your point of view to improve my plots. but if you meant white moon peak, no it is complete it will give you training methoud and philosophic point of view that you can use in your novel, it will give you several interesting idea for monster and cultivation methods and you can easyly drive several system from them, it will give you the perspective of a Chinese native i also read several other book but if those who read this are familiar with chinese book is that they use too much metaphor and some times you just outright take them as a similar thing then latter you understand that no those are diffrent, white moon peak make you understand difrents and seperate each section and explain it to you.@@TheTaleTinkerer

In my storybook telling I went back to the roots of magic, and kept it simple, a hard magic system, where language is math and math is energy. As the main character, I'm from Earth and all of this Magic "stuff" is dumped upon me as being a chosen figure or "weaponized" weaponry and trying to figure out how it works this "mana" wall, as I refer to it, as I'm the 8th Element hero on a planet that produces "hero" and "sages", There is the hard system and the "soft" system is the person involved. I arrive with an AI Defense Turret that uses my image and am conscious of my 'Imprint" as Wizard-only classes are imprinted for the AI Defensive Tower, which I also have a "simulator" and an AI library. As all of this gives way to innovation in "magic" of the soft system, trying figure and compose the extensions of the magic of the hard system. Another main Character offshoot is a Spiritual Tree or a Tree-in that has a Shaman Elf feel or part of the astral plane, and which also has a 'Simulator" in Biomechanical engineering, as being his own entity. As the old earth, me and the Tree-in have a past of visions and traveling to see him, for a spell, but it was blocked memory on purpose while on earth, as I was the one to save him as he was in seed pod form, a quest in the future of me going there. As I also found 2 nerd scientists, a couple that have roots tied into this, prophecy that can really utilize our tools, we come with. As of now my past, makes more sense to me, as to why I got these things in the first place. As a Weaponry, I've tried to get Starlight mana and sew it onto the regular magic spells as "armor piercing" rounds, but it acts as a shield force field, allowing one to circumvent opposing darkness magic or the negative plane. As the tools used also have the "Codex Code" of Mana, getting enough pieces or tools and a language of mana can then be further simulated. Quintessence -> Starlight Mana -> Mana --> Soft Magic User.
The big problem is the "soft" magic user, naturally as the user needs to explain it in words that turn the math into energy.
Yes, there are many ingredients in my storytelling, that touch on all these aspects. So yes your video has been insightful, thank you.

I'm glad you found some value in the video and thank you for sharing all these details of yours. The idea of combining hard with soft through system and user sounds quite intriguing.

I was never asked that one before ^^ I'm afraid I'm incredibly "bland" when it comes to these things.
As someone who grew up loving the "Dragonlance" series and in particular "Sturm Brightblade" as a character, I've always been a fan of the good guys, the knights, the light side, the heroes.
So, as much as I'm Jedi in Star Wars, Alliance in World of Warcraft, I'm also Gryffindor through and through ^^
I still prefer complex characters with emotional struggles and personal challenges though. So not just super old-school cheesy "black and white" :)

@@fireflame62 I find the Pottermore quiz unreliable. The only way to truly know which house you are in is to do some deep soul-searching. If you're debating between Slytherin and Ravenclaw, I'd suggest looking into the meaning behind each house and then asking yourself value-based questions. For example, if you are presented with a problem in life, is your first impulse to go to the library and understand as much as possible about it before taking action OR would you first use your cunning and resourcefulness to come up with solutions? Do you like learning for the sake of learning or to attain a particular self-serving objective?
