The 1959 USGP was held at Sebring and the 1960 USGP was held at Riverside Raceway. So, 1958 would have been the last year that GP points were awarded to Indy 500 competitors. After World War II, Indy Car rules were similar to pre-war Formula One limits of 3.0 liters supercharged and 4.5 liters normally aspirated.

i couldn't watch the whole thing so apologies if this was said, the main thing we have to point out is F1 cars are of course not generic, which would create massive differences between this in a real race. Mainly, we'd see some runaway victories like the old days. Could this be mitigating without compromising the spirit of F1 too much? Let's have a pretend discussion anyways, as if F1 were actually planning to run the Indy 500 (weirder things are happening on this simulation timeline so why not). Here's a short to-do list I think they would have to address.
1 - tires - would need an oval tire ($$$). Maybe firestone could just do it.
2 - aero - I think they would actually need an Indy specific aero regulation supplement. Maybe not spec but very strict. We'd still have different cars so, in fact, you could not make the aero of those different cars exactly the same , but I'd imagine keeping it pretty basic and tight would be a good idea. It would probably need to be even lower downforce as well. I'd imagine teams won't love the thought of spending too much on development of a kit for 1 race. Maybe championship contenders wouldn't devote significant budget to this event under the cost cap where they have 24 other races to prepare for, and it could be an opportunity for a mid-field team to steal a win? Hopefully, DRS would not be in play.
3 - Powertrains - Would we want some kind of BoP going on here? Or just a simple power cap? If not the best engines would probably just run away with the thing? Do Hybrids even come into play much on an oval with little to no braking? Perhaps they could be unplugged for this event?
4 - Safety - would F1 adopt an aero screen for the oval? Frankly I don't understand why they don't have it anyways. The potential for debris striking a driver inside the halo is still a very serious risk, on the oval they'd surly consider it.
5- testing - getting some track time would probably be even more important than it is for IndyCar, with the high speeds and risks of Indy coupled with a complete lack of oval experience, teams would benefit from some test days. Would the sport be willing to take off the month of May with its 2,567 race calendar? Perhaps with F1 already in Miami teams could bring their oval kits early and get some testing in a few week ahead of time, but would the entire circus stay stateside for a whole month? Imola's 2023 date would have to be moved or nixed... bummer
6 - Monaco - Would have to be moved. Make it the first week of June. Then the International racing community can cruise up to Le Mans for test day the following week.
Well I've talked myself into it. I will say, Indy is a premier event and ought to get more recognition. While we're at it Sebring and Daytona should count towards the WEC. Yes I am off work today.

    • @waynec3563
      @waynec3563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

1 - Pirelli would do what they normally do, and pump up the tyres. That would help with the speed.
2 - I think they could do like Indycar have done, and have very simple front and rear wing to be used to balance the car. I am sure that the underbody of the current cars has more than enough downforce to take the oval flat out. Wouldn't need DRS, rear wing would probably only have the one element.
3 - Engines are all very close in performance. Drag will be the main difference.
Current PU rules have two ways to recover energy - braking and from the turbo. There won't be too much brake recovery, but the MGUH will recover some power (around 80hp) at full throttle, which it will send directly to the MGUK.
The battery can be filled up during the war up, and can be used for 33s at full power, 66s if the MGUH can develop the 80hp. Would be good for some tactical use.
4 - Yes, they would consider it. On the plus side, it might lower drag a little.
5 - There would be much simulation at the factory, so the drivers may not need too much practice.
Rules would need to change for refuelling. At the moment it is very slow and only can be done in the pits.
2 stops for fuel would be needed, how many for tyres?

America’s premier racing event - used to be a Formula 1 race. Yes, you read that right: For 11 whole years, the Indy 500 was a points-paying race on the F1 calendar.
The 1950 Formula 1 season was the fourth under FIA sanctioning, and the first that included the Indy 500.
The thinking was, basically, that the Indy 500 was a big event worthy of being a Grand Prix.
So, the FIA included the event on the F1 calendar.
It seemed like a pretty easy way to unite a predominately European fanbase with a predominately American one.
But it flopped being in F1 in 1960.
European Teams could not afford to pay the bills to come to the USA.

I like your videos but it is not the Indianapolis 500, it is 17 F1 cars racing g on the oval, which is cool I enjoyed it. Still, not the 500. If you had 33 of them and raced 500 miles then you can call it the 500!

That would be an amazing idea. Not to mention it gives Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, among others, a chance to shine in a way that Formula 1 can’t do.
I think Ferrari, Aston Martin and all F1 drivers are just being foolish and whiny to not wanna do so.

thats true, formula one doesn't really have that ONE BIG race. theyve got monaco, spa, monza, they are historic/ prestigious, but none of them have that daytona 500/ indy 500 level.

@@hunterpro_1 AMEN! No track in F1 can ever match the prestige of the Indianapolis 500. Regardless if the prize money is bigger in F1. After all, Al Unser, Jr. once said when it comes to Indy, “money or living doesn’t matter at all. Winning the Indy 500 is the ONLY thing that matters!”
