Hello Peter, I got the same issue last week. Same inductor was burnt. I fixed it finally by replace to use a higher current ferrite bead. It seems a product design issue. ICOM didn't consider the max. current when the unit is operating in full function, highest level LCD backlight, TX 10W by ext. power supply and empty battery charging.

Hello Peter, many years ago, you have made an excellent video about the audio - NF way of an CB-Radio! Thank you very much! Even me do have understand your excellent explanations! Can't you perhaps make another videos about the RX HF-way or/and about the TX-way of an CB-Radio? I would be happy! Well, I think there are barely good books or videos about this topic. Again, thank you for the many good videos from you. I hope you keep it up. Best Regards Klaus (an old man of 65).
I always enjoy your videos, your patience and your skills. Wonderful. Please would you consider showing your desoldering and soldering techniques in the future if possible? 😀
Thank you! Most techniques have already been shown in earlier videos. But hopefully we have some more time in the future to show again all of this stuff..
A fault with the first component in the chain! I wish I had that kind of luck! Excellent repair Peter. Not a big fan of these SDR transceivers due to the lack of serviceability. I prefer the old boat anchors ( Kenwoods in my case )and audio equipment for the relative ease of service and parts/donor rigs.
Da kann ich mich nur anschließen. Diese Geschwindigkeit der "Petersprache" klingt mir zu aufgeregt. Die Leute welchen das alles zu langsam geht sollten sich selbst die Geschwindigkeit höher stellen.
Thought something was wrong with my (computer) rig. Tried adjusting the audio speed downward but after a few seconds it reset to the original! Sure hope this is an accident since the OP speaks at moderate pace, distinctly, and with immaculate English (probably not his first language). If this is a kindly effort to appease some jackass(es) who requested QRQ, politely refer them to the USA National Auctioneers Association.
You can also see the power out change from 5 watts to 10 at the right side of the PO meter when you switch power to external. Thanks for the look inside. I think this is one radio that if anything dies on me, it will go back to Icom for repair. I did install the USB-C board though but that didn't require complete disassembly.
Thanks! No, hand soldering, no solder paste. The filter melts if it gets heat from above. We took it out with hot air, but that was no option for the new filter..
Goo grief Peter that was some challenge to repair the fault. My first thought was a voltage spike which destroyed the filter. What did you find that caused the failure ? Did the OM alter the power out. Jeez looking at the compactness of the circuitry/components it was incredible how you manage that repair. I think I will stick with my Xeigu G-90 🥸 I would not purchase a modern rig at this stage. I believe the manufacturers nowadays are producing equipment which require board replacement instead of board repair. Great job Peter.
Thank you. Most likely we'll never know what caused the fault..It is not that radios like this can't be fixed on component level, it is more that manufactures more and more support PCB swap only. My personal point of view is that it is the wrong way because we all need to be able to afford such a repair...
As always Peter you make it look easy, I agree with you on what caused the failure. Will you ask the person that owns it if they used excessive power levels? *Cheers* *73*
Hi Peter, another amazing Video. Tnx 4 that. I am wondering where Do you get those radios 😂. Every Radio has its own special little problem and you fix it. I am very impressed! 73 de Stavi DG3SEG
Hi Peter, I guess that the reason for the filter failure was a bad solder connection of the inductor on that side you have observed the burned pad. I you still have the removed inductor, please measure its resistance. Best Regards vy73, Chris DL2KCK
I wonder about the USB connector. If it is able to supply 1A power through the port, then the 3.5A might be exceeded under constant Tx load. Might be even worse for the USB-C connector. And if charging is required as well with a flat battery. The filter might be under specified. Maybe the 7A version should have been used. Most likely though Icom have thought about this, and the current supply is limited through the USB port.
Hi Peter my name is Reggie and I would like to know if you can do the TX mod on my icom 705 and is there any other way to get in touch with you. Thanks Reggie

Hallo Bernd, ja man braucht wirklich die richtigen Werkzeuge insbesondere ein Mikroskop und ein wenig Erfahrung... Danke fürs Vorbeischauen! 73
This usually happens with the original mini usb connector, I have mine changed to a C type charging port. It works fine.
Hi Peter
Please what probe do you use with your spectrum Analyzer to check the power levels in circuit?
Really nice job

Hi Peter, I guess that the reason for the filter failure was a bad solder connection of the inductor on that side you have observed the burned pad. I you still have the removed inductor, please measure its resistance. Best Regards vy73, Chris DL2KCK
The inductor was measured fine. The solder joint was burned as seen in the video .
Hi Peter, kinda off subject but how deep is your bench ? Front to back. I don't feel like mine is deep enough at 30" . Thanks
Do you think this is a result of trying to use the radio with an external power amplifier?
Hi Peter, great job with that EMI filter soldering.
Did you check the service menu to see if someone was messing with the power settings?
Thank you. Setting was finde...
Peter, how long did it take to work down to the board with the fault?
If you are trained it takes only a couple of minutes, but if not it may happen that you give up.
Thanks Peter. So the lifespan of an IC-705 is as long as there are batteries. Or you have have to fix the issue...
lol obviously yes
I wonder about the USB connector. If it is able to supply 1A power through the port, then the 3.5A might be exceeded under constant Tx load. Might be even worse for the USB-C connector. The USB connector is NOT used to supply the radio..
@@TRXLabBut it IS used to supply power to a connected device. Or is that function disabled?
could you short leg 3 and 4 on the emi? wouldn’t that show if the filter is the only fault?
Yes, possible as long you make sure that there is no short behind the filter
Make a video using a CRT yoke core for balun or unun.
