Peter your still the best of the best in knowledge. Your very kind and helpful to fellow Ham Operators I learn so much and really in debt to your love and kindness. God bless
There are very few real true troubleshooters online. You sir are one of them. I look forward to your videos to reinforce sound method and process for fault finding then plan for remedy and repair. You are a treasure and I don't say it enough. Thank you again and 73, NZ5i (ex DJ0Si)
Peter has changed so many of those bad filters he has bought them in bulk. Kenwood has a dual band radio that had the same issue with bad filters. In fact I think you did a video on it. Good video as always. I would have put gloves on before I touched that bad filter, it looked stuff was growing on it.
It's not just a Kenwood thing. In the last month or so I have probably replaced 15 sets of them in Vertex HT's that came out of commercial service. Last time I ordered them for the HT's I bought 50 narrow and 50 wide filters. Vertex has a TSB on the problem. There was a couple year timeframe that is effected by the ceramic filter plague.
That was some impressive troubleshooting. Thanks for bringing us along on this adventure. I always learn something new when you post a video. Thank You!
They don't always have that crystalline crud on the outside of the filters. Have been doing a lot of Vertex HT's that have the ceramic filter plague problem. They usually have a oily substance on the outside. I think it's the plastic decomposing. Vertex has a TSB that covers the issue in their radios. There was a couple year timeframe that TSB covered. Before and after that timeframe they seem to hold up fine.
Hi Mike good to see you, trust you are okay! Yes, fully agree to what you are saying. Have experienced several times exactly the same. Hey by the way, would be cool to see you again with new videos on YT! The community is missing you....
I guessed a TOKO filter, before you opened it. But OK it was not that type, but anyway, the filter fault is so well known, I have a stock of all varieties that I could find on RS and Element14/Farnell. I have even found these filters create the spots of liquid, when not even used or been in a PCB after some years. I have repaired my own Ts-2000 and Ft-817nd that had this fault, and for many other OM's. The brand of Filter I have had best success as replacement, is Japan type "Murata". P.S. I do not repair for money, as I have retired more that 10 years ago. ZL2ALW Andrew
Hi Andrew. It IS very interesting why these brand of filters fail so often🤔🤔 But, yes, Murata are THE best filters available. Maybe a classic case of "cutting cost" on component quality to save a few pence per unit? Who knows? Nina 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
If I understand correctly: That filter is only used in Narrow FM? So if the radio could have been switch to Wide FM for the 145MHz band it would have worked fine?
Peter, this is most interesting. What is this conductive salt-like substance? Is it caused by moisture? Could it be caused by the lack of a fan in this particular model because of its small size? If we find a similar affected filter, we will carefully take it apart, and report back with our discoveries. 73's. Wayne, Barbara and Nina. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😊🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Hello all together. Well, there are a lot of discussions on why these filters are failing. It is a kind of chemical process, but still not clear what's causing it. Or we simply don't get the right answers from the manufactures because they fear to lose market shares. Profit is also a point and may be wrong handling during production too...All the best to you three
You're knowledge of radio repair is impressive Peter.

Thank you so much for your video. My FTM10SR had the same issue as yours, and I was able to fix it by replacing the M50FW ceramic filter!

Certain serial number ranges of Kenwood TS-2000s are also famous for this.
My favorite time is watching these videos. Thanks Peter!

@@ninaevans4501 More likely no longer available and I'm not sure of the wisdom of storing these devices unless you can keep them dry somehow.
Wie immer eine saubere Arbeit.

Yes, if the filters could set filters independent on a frequency.
What’s going on with your video speeds on these recent uploads ? Very enjoyable content but can’t adjust speed to normal while watching on my Tv..
Danke 73 Peter 😅

Stay with MURATA components, otherwise you could end up with a clogged filter ❤️❤️👍👍👍😏😏😄😄😄😄😄
