  • I wrote and wrote and wrote and on April 24th, I managed to finish the first draft of my Regency romance! I'm really pleased with this first draft and while I do plan to put it aside for a (short) break, I'm super excited to get back into it and start the revision process!
    How much of a break do you give yourself in between drafts of a WIP?
    I'll be back either on May 10th or 17th with a new video!

    Hooray for finishing the draft! Every time I walk by my computer, it calls to me to start editing. So instead, I have been putting my focus into working ahead on TH-cam content for May so when the time comes to sit and start revisions, I have as few distractions as possible!
    (Also Tears of the Kingdom was SUCH a fun game. I cannot tell you how many hours I spent sticking stuff together and just building the most outrageous things!)

      Thank you 💕 I've been dyyyying to get back to the draft, but have held firm all week in not looking at it, haha!
      TOTK and BOTW are/were so much fun!! I still have like 700 Korok seeds to collect, so I have plenty left to do 😅

    Congratulations! I can't wait to write 'the end' on my current WIP. 😅 My last downtime lasted about five days of no-writing, then I tried to OuTliNe my current WIP but didn't get too far into it because the characters were demanding to be let out. I hope you find more success than I did. 🙃

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'll get to 'The End' eventually!! You know me, I gotta have that outline, but lots of people work without one or only with some vague plot points ahead of time.

    • @76kilosofshade81
      @76kilosofshade81 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MeredithPhillipsWrites For sure, just gotta keep writing! I don't worry too much about not much of an outline before the initial draft. There's lots of time in editing to fix things, right? Editing is the solution!?

    Excited for you, that you completed the 1st draft -- BUT EVEN MORE EXCITED ABOUT THE MOVIES YOU WILL BE WATCHING!!!! Wow, wait till you see "Howl's Moving Castle," one of Miyazaki's best! Also, "Random Harvest" is my friend Barbara Brand's FAVORITE movie of all time, so I would love to know what you think of it! WHERE are you hearing about these other pictures, the Russian one and the Chinese/French ones?? Very interesting, I will have to look into them more. The "N&S" one, eh, I don't know, that would be at the bottom of my list. We finished watching the re-make of "Shogun" recently, but we never saw the 1980 original with Richard Chamberlain, so we were very pleased with it. DO NOT engage in TH-cam arguments between people favoring either the 1980 vs. 2024 versions of "Shogun," it's even worse than the Man o'War vs. Secretariat GOAT arguments that I see frequently on horse racing channels (I'm a Man o'War fan, BTW). Kentucky Derby is tomorrow, don't forget, the 150th running, so a historic one, for sure! Off to fix dinner!

      I just filmed a whole 20 minute review of everything so you can watch that next week hahaha! Or call me and I can gush about my favorites.
      Mirror and In the Mood for Love I saw referenced on multiple occasions in Cinefix's various videos over the last many years. Their commentary on them and the little clips they showed intrigued me.

    Congratulations! It's such a great feeling when your own characters surprise you. How wonderful that it happened in the epilogue!
    I hope you enjoy Howl's Moving Castle! It's one of my favourite movies.
    I'm not sure if anyone has ever asked you this, but how are you so productive with pets? 😅 Like you, I used to make use of my mornings before work to write, but now that I have a fourteen-week-old puppy, I seem to have no time anymore. My pup seems to need cuddles in the morning, and by the time he settles down I've lost my writing time. I love him to bits so I'm happily sacrificing that time, but I feel like I'm not making progress anymore with my story.
    I'm not sure if you've raised Jade and Nahaan since puppyhood, but you seem to have lots of experience with pets. How long did it take/how do you get them to be independent (i.e. chill on a bed while you're writing)?

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I looooved Howl's Moving Castle! I have a review of everything I watched already filmed and ready for next week's vlog 😊
      I've never had a puppy before. We adopted our dogs when they were about a year (Jade) and about two years (Nahan) old. I do know that the puppy stage doesn't last forever, though, so hang in there! Nahan has always been pretty chill. He'll lounge around wherever until you offer to do something with him like play or take a walk. If he really has to go potty or wants to go outside, he'll come stand at my desk and just stare at me haha! But we didn't train him to do that, it's just his thing somehow.
      Jade is another story. She has behavioral issues and requires a lot more supervision and structure. I have a very strict schedule with her because otherwise she can get cranky at best, aggressive at worst. So for her, she has an x-pen with a dog bed in it that she goes in to sleep during the day, usually from 9 AM - 4 PM (which is most of my work day). That's in our bedroom, though. She can't be left out to sleep because of her severe sleep startle. If she falls asleep and then wakes up and sees someone, she'll run at them and attack (biting, snarling, etc). She's a decent size dog and can do some damage, so we have to be very careful with all that.
      In the mornings, her 'official' wake up time is 6:30. If she wakes up before then, either me or my husband will take her outside to potty, but then it's back to bed until 6:30. She's gotten a lot better with this in the last six months or so, but prior to that, there were days she would whine for 30-60 minutes before it was time to get up. The strictness there partly is due to the behavioral issues, but also because 5:30-6:30 is my writing time. If she's up and about, she has to be supervised and I can't do that and write at the same time. My husband gets up with her at 6:30 and does a morning routine while I finish writing and get ready for work.
      For your puppy, crate training or an x-pen might help to some extent? Either one could be placed next to your desk, so then you're still with puppy, but he can't roam around and get into trouble on his own in the rest of your house. Then again, puppy cuddles in the morning sound really nice!

    • @Ahana108
      @Ahana108 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MeredithPhillipsWrites Thank you for such a detailed reply! I really connect with what you said about being unable to supervise and write at the same time. I think I need to prioritize my writing more and therefore be stricter with my pup in the mornings. I also work from home and I'm strict with using the crate beside my desk during work, but not so much in the mornings. Thanks again! Give Jade and Nahan some extra cuddles from me :) I look forward to your movie review video!

    Congratulations. Is it possible that the rabbits were waking up Jade and then Jaden was waking you up and now that things have changed Jada sleeping through the night? I have lots of fur babies and my sleep strongly depends on how they sleep so just wondering If that might be the cause.

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you 💕 I'm very pleased to be finished with it!
      We have Jade sleep in our room (in a pen), which is on the other side of the house from the bunnies, so I'd be surprised if that was the reason. We've switched up some of her meds in recent months, so I'm more inclined to think it's related to that, but who knows!
