    This book is a must-read. I was captivated and moved by it. Clints writing still is often poetic, highly descriptive and quite insightful.

      @@The_king567 did anyone say he was a historian? Can't it be a must read for his perspective, the quality of his writing and how captivating that writing is? Why cant he have a perspective on things and I consume that perspective? Who said I was reading it because I thought he was a historian? He's a poet writing about issues that affect him, his people and his children? Where is the problem? Have you read this book? I just don't understand your problem here.

    It’s honestly sad that America is so fixated on slavery. Still, America did not invent slavery or have the most slaves brought. This is sad to watch

    The truth ! Let’s start with the first slaves in America were Irish and Scottish ! And we’re given to the native Indians in trade for lands ! And we’re no emancipated when blacks were . Still generations and generations of Scot Irish that remained in slavery . Irish and scots were also sent to Africa and the Caribbean islands for trade and slavery

    That's why tearing down statues is a bad idea.

    • @SWSimpson
      @SWSimpson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tearing down those statues is NOT wrong. MOST of those statues of Civil War "heroes" of the Confederacy were installed AFTER passage of the Civil Rights Act as an "F-you" from the South. Those statues should be relegated to history, appropriately categorized and honestly taught. They do not need to be on public lands as an emblem of honor to remember someone's heroism... They belong in museums dedicated to the past and put in historical context. Those people existed, they opposed and fought against the Union, fought against Liberty and Justice for All, fought against the notion that ALL men (mankind) are created equal. Today, their progenitors maintain a semblance of that racism, keeping it alive in the present through extreme gerrymandering and voter suppression tactics. And, of course, the white ladies who call the police on black people for no good reason. Plenty of video on TH-cam to keep you entertained, by their stupidity and bigotry.
      At the cusp of the birth of our nation, the Founding Fathers removed condemnation of slavery language from the Declaration of Independence, otherwise the Southern States would not have joined in declaring independence from England and perhaps, then, the war of independence would have been lost.
      OFF public lands an into Museums.

      @@SWSimpson Do you think that people wouldn't destroy those statues if they could? I don't claim to be a history buff I don't know who purchased those statues, but they ARE a reminder of what happened in this country, I say they should stay where they are.

Why don’t they tear down the statues of awful dictators in some countries why is that? Why is it only America America didn’t invent slavery racism and you’re wrong the reason America succeeded from England was not because they wanted to keep slavery. That’s ridiculous. You don’t know history. And you call other people ignorant that’s so funny lmao 🤣

      You are the one who is ignorant. Clint Smith is a highly esteemed writer and researcher with the academic credentials to back it up. While you, Matthew, seem in denial of historical facts and truths. The recent manufactured outrage against Critical Race Theory, the decrease in support for Black Lives Matter, the abuse of Naomi Osaka, the lowered scores of Simone Biles, the failure to teach the massacres of Black people in numerous cities and towns across America all support the fact that America has a major problem teaching the facts about its original sin, its most heinous inhumanity, slavery. The truth has been barely, infrequently, incompletely told. So pick up a book, read it, learn the history. Until then, keep your ignorance to yourself.

    This light-skinned young man should check his lineage. I’m quite sure he’s half white. Maybe he should embrace the fact that he lives in a nation where it’s possible to do and be whatever you want if you’re willing to put in the hard work and sacrifice.
