    I think atonement is the wrong term. I, as a German, do not feel responsible for the deeds of more than 70 years ago, but I feel jointly responsible that something like this does not happen anymore. And I get scared when I look at the USA today: so much reminds me of Germany in the 20s and 30s.
    I am proud of the way we deal with our past, but there is still room for improvement. It didn't happen overnight, it took generations.
    Denial is in any case not a good start, US!

      Indeed, it's difficult forcing oneself to reflect on the past in order to make the future brighter. But it's still important, considering the darker turn the US has taken in the last twenty years.

      For decades of slavery, institutionalized racism, sexism, atrocities in Vietnam, invasion of Iraq and etc.
