I think atonement is the wrong term. I, as a German, do not feel responsible for the deeds of more than 70 years ago, but I feel jointly responsible that something like this does not happen anymore. And I get scared when I look at the USA today: so much reminds me of Germany in the 20s and 30s. I am proud of the way we deal with our past, but there is still room for improvement. It didn't happen overnight, it took generations. Denial is in any case not a good start, US!
