    I can confirm his technique. Same technique to shine my boots in the military. We/I didn't use such high quality products simply because boot shining was nearly a daily process, and would get ridiculously expensive to use the same products he used.
    We also took a Bic lighter to slightly melt the wax in later stages of the polish. This helps it sink into the pores easier but also to harden the wax after cooling. I don't know how this would work with high end polishes and waxes but it worked fine while using Kiwi and Lincoln, but a word of caution....when I say "slightly", its basically touching it with the flame for a moment and not longer! It definitely takes a feel and practice to get it right just as it does while applying polish/wax with 2 fingers and a tee shirt (best method hands down)!

    • @davidturner1079
      @davidturner1079 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right! Very good point! Some people will use a solvent (like the cream polish on the top layer) to do this melt, some people will use a flame, and some people despise both methods and will only use hand pressure and hundreds of layers of wax.
      Thanks for your service.

    • @josh33172
      @josh33172 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right David, no doubt, but among the things I wanted to spend an excessive time doing, shining boots was not one of them! In my experience, a flame or heat gun set at low was the fastest way to get the wax down into the leather's pores for a foundation..That's been my experience anyways, also Thank You for your support!

    If you wear dress shoes. It's a Must to have them clean and polished....a Must.

    no, when doing a military type shine, i only use cloth...a brush will ruin the shine...how many coats really just depends on the shoe and it's leather....at least 3-4 stages of wax n' water coats... and buffing in between just depends again on the leather and how well it is taking the polish...on a good leather I don't need to buff between.... hope that this helps

    welt brush is for cleaning up the welt and giving color back to the leather...welt brush is good for getting into the pores, especially on the sides of the sole...if your shoe does not really need re-coloring, theoretically you can go straight to the wax....hope that this helps

    • @lullemans72
      @lullemans72 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i must disagree. by shining them first, you are in fact providing the newly bought shoes with a fresh, protective layer of polish.

    • @kylecotton4770
      @kylecotton4770 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They should be worn round the house inside the natural creases, folds and floors in the leather are shown. Then one phished should be "showed off". Not breaking them in will cause them to crack which will produce quite the mess.

    How often should one condition and shine dress shoes?

    • @AndresOssa
      @AndresOssa 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends in use and quality of your shoes. With a shine like in the video and just driving to work and walking over carpets it can last for months. If like me you walk the streets and every now and then someone step on your shoe in the bus/train then it may last a month or less. Also you should have at least two pairs of shoes to let them rest every now and then. The better the Polish the longer it lasts.

    conditionner feeds the leather but with time, the color will fade away. the wax just cover leather, that's why if you do what he's doing on the parts where leather wrinkles, the wax will go away. In fact, wax polish isn't necessary for leather, it's just shinny! the conditionner is a once in a while thing, cream (used with the welt brush here) is necessary to keep color in leather and feed leather every 2-3 times you wear your shoes.

      Different leather quality gives different shine.

    • @davidturner1079
      @davidturner1079 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had almost all leather take a shine. The step that most people miss, is truly stripping down the quartermaster (first out of the box) chemical shine after it has served its purpose.
      Think of leather like skin. What the polish is doing, is filling in the pores and cracks of your skin layer by layer until the top part is burnished to a high gloss. If you put a lotion on your hands, and rub it in, but it still leaves a ton on the outside, you rub it off. The same is similar to animal skin. Your skin MUST be hydrated properly to take a good shine.
      Once it is hydrated, let the shoe dry. Water can damage dead skin. It will cause problems. So take your time. Go slow.
      First, apply a mink oil conditioner to the skin. Let it soak in for about a day. Next day, take your cream polish (less is more), and lightly run a small even amount all over the shoe. You know you have enough when as you apply it, it looks cloudy, but not goopy or impasto (like thick paint on a canvas). The right amount is a very thin layer all over the shoe that is just enough to be cloudy all over. You will want to press this layer with a firm pressure. If it does not haze, you have either used to much, or you have not spread it thin enough. Make tiny circles all over the shoe with firm pressure until a cloudy haze develops. If at any time, you feel like your cloth is beginning to drag, it doesn't feel like the first time you put it on, it's getting clumpy, or hard to spread, then change your rags location (this will usually happen when the rag is too heavily saturated with cream).
      After you have one hazy layer all over the shoe, give it about 3 or 4 minutes and move on to the other shoe and repeat the process on that one.
      At this point, grab your horsehair brush. In even but firm and a very fast motion, brush over all of the shoe until the haze is gone. Repeat the process of applying the cream polish to the shoe. Remember, a little goes a long way, do not apply enough to leave it clumpy, goopy, or so thick that it looks like you painted it on with a paint brush.
      Remember that your want to press firmly, and run in light circles. Each new layer is depositing polish into the pores and cracks, and even the scratches of the previous layer of polish. The further it is burnished an those pores are filled, the more occlusion and light bounce will occur.
      Now, once you have a decent oil shine across the body of the shoe by doing the previous steps (rub polish, wait, horsehair brush), let your shoes sit. Longer is better here. You really need to let the solvents in the cream polish cook off. The reason for this, is that the solvent if not evaporated can burnish into the hard wax. When it does, you will be unable to apply the hard wax properly. So give it at least 3 to 4 hours at a minimum.
      At this point, you will want some good high quality wax polish (kiwi will work, but you must think of it as about as good as a dollar store steak It's food, but only in the worst sense). If all you have is kiwi, then I recommend you get the parade gloss kiwi can. If you can, I recommend Lincoln hard wax. I have had YEARS of experience giving a spit shine in the military, trust me when I say that if you can spring for lincoln, you should. It's in the same price point, but it tons better. Also remember that you only want to mirror shine the toe cap and the heel to start. If you mirror shine other areas, your hard wax will flake, chip, and can even damage the shoe.
      Nevertheless, once the shoes have dried of the solvents, you will begin by getting some water on your rag. Just a spray or two, or just a dab in the water. You can use a rag, cotton balls, or cotton rounds. Whatever floats your fancy, but I prefer a rag to start and cotton balls to finish. Now take your rag, wet it. It should not be soaking, but wet enough that it feels damp. Run your wet rag into the polish in a tiny circle once to pick up about the same amount of polish as you would with the cream stage. Remember that we are building up layers and burnishing them into the cracks and pores to create an occlusion. This will take time. To do this correctly, you will need to apply about anywhere up to 10 layers to see your mirror shine.
      Again, apply the polish to the shoe, this time using a moderate, not firm pressure. As you apply this layer, you want to again use the same technique (small circles, light haze). The more you rub this haze before moving on and letting it dry in the lower layers, the better your shine. Once you have a hazy shine on your toe cap, and you have been running that haze in circles and feel your getting no where, now you are doing it right. Stop for just a moment. Change the position on your rag. Get your rag very damp. If it feels sticky or tacky, your cloth is not damp enough. Just water. VERY LIGHTLY (cannot stress this enough). VERY lightly run your hand over the now hazy burnished toe cap. This water layer will pick up the polish in the high points and move them to fill and burnish the overall layers. The haze will disappear. Once the haze is gone. Go to the next shoe and let that one sit a moment.
      Remember that you want this polish to burnish on each layer to create the occlusion. This means, that if you put on each layer a ton of wax, it be creating more highs and lows instead of only filling in the lows. So as you go, you start with a little water and more polish, and around your end (layer 8-10), it will be so little polish, that you won't even realize it, and a TON of water. It should be beading off your shoe at this point.
      As a final basic step, grab a cotton ball. SOAK it in water (COLD). Just press it on the shoe. THEN, with a light pressure, quickly run it over the cap.
      Let your shoes breathe, and the solvents dry out.
      They will look GREAT at this point. There is one more advanced technique that some use,, but only do it after you get the hang of building layers. That is, after your shoes have dried (at least an hour) on your final layer of your spit shine, you will add a tiny amount of cream polish. Again, light layer, very light amount. Rub in lots of circles. What this is doing, is the solvent is melting the top layer of the wax polish. This will melt it to a higher shine. The more light pressure tiny circles, and the more haze, the better. Let this dry a few minutes by going to the other shoe. Now grab that cotton ball with COLD water, and just give it that very very very light rub with tons of water.
      This method will produce the highest shine on nearly all leathers.
      Good luck, and remember, that your are painting layers with wax, it's as much art as science.

    Hey fam, I hope that you and your loved ones are well. I would like to ask you the most important question ever asked:
    Who is Jesus? Not who is He to you. Rather, who is He really?
    Jesus is the Son of God, who came to the world as a man. He lived a perfect and sinless life . Even though He was perfect and sinless, on the cross of Calvary God wrathfully punished Him for the sins of the world. 3 days later He rose from death. Now He is seated at the right hand of God, ruling as King over Heaven and Earth.
    On the judgment day He will judge you, me and every human being that has ever lived. Those who believed in Him will enter eternal joy with Him, but those who did not believe in Jesus will be sent to eternal condemnation.
    So turn from your sins and believe in the Jesus, that you can be forgiven for all your sins, because of His death and resurrection.
    Acts 15:11
    ”On the contrary, we believe it is through the grace of the Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."
    Ephesians 1:7
    ”In Him, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace"
    Ephesians 2:8
    ”For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God,”
    John 11:25-26: "Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'
    1 Corinthians 6:14: "And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power."
    Romans 6:9: "We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him."

    I'm pretty annoyed by how only the front end of the shoe gets polished. thus doesn't seem to be thorough enough.

      +Mitchell Scott actually the whole shoe got polished, but only the toe got "spit" shined. the reason is if you add all the layers of wax needed for a spit shine on the whole shoe, the areas that fold and crease would crack the wax and make the shoe look bad. but if you see in the begining he put cream polish on the whole shoe, also a thin layer of wax all around for protection and then spit shined the toe
