The style of the house is from the Showa era.
They probably kept the original form of the traditional Japanese house and renovated it to make it more practical.
This kind of house is rare in modern Tokyo.

I LOVE Kazariya. My cousin introduced that place to me back in 2007. I was able to go back in 2019. If I’m not mistaken, Kazariya was founded in 1656 which means it was around for over 100 years before Europeans discovered Australia. Wild hey? Hope you’re feeling better soon. Breakups are hard so lots of warm fuzzies your way.

  • @janusu

What a lovely home! This reminds me of my old apartment in Toyonaka City, just outside of Osaka. The building was fairly nondescript from the outside, but the interiors were styled much like these old houses. It was a 2LDK, I think. The two bedrooms and living room had tatami floors and it had a combined kitchen/dining area. I lived on the second floor of the two-story building. The kitchen windows overlooked the neighbor's beautiful garden. We didn't get to sit in it, but it was still a pleasure to see. The living room side had the balcony and overlooked the neighborhood street. For heat in the winter, there were pipe outlets in the walls where you would put a hose for a gas heater. I remember in the winter reaching out from under my covers to turn it on and wait a few minutes for it to heat up the room before getting out of bed. And then in the bathroom I had a small electric heater set with a timer to turn on in the morning roughly about 30 minutes before I planned to get up so that it was warm by the time I got there. The unit did not have a heated toilet seat, so I was glad to at least be able to heat up the room. I miss the Japanese-style bathtub. It wasn't fancy, but you could fill it all the way to the top and let the water spill over the sides and into the drain in the floor. It was so relaxing! And, man, I really miss the kotatsu we had in the living room! I think the building was constructed maybe in the 80's? Unsure if it was before or after the new earthquake construction codes were in place. I went back for a visit this summer and walked through my old neighborhood. My fist time back in about 15 years. That apartment building was torn down and now there is a children's kindergarten there. Life goes on, but they were some great memories.
We're all wishing you much happiness and success, Sarah! This machiya house seemed like a great way to unwind and reflect. I think I would love to try something like this sometime. Thanks for another great video.
