- Bay of Islands is an amazing part of Northland we were happy to explore during our New Zealand road trip. As you may know from our previous travel vlogs, we spent a couple of weeks up north, at the very top of the North Island and visited many beautiful destinations out there. Of course, we couldn't skip the Bay of Islands as it's a very popular spot for both locals and tourists.
This video is mainly about the Bay of Islands and includes popular tourist attractions like a cruise to Urupukapuka Island and Hole in the Rock from Paihia, taking a ferry to Russell, visiting Russell historical township and tour to the Pompallier Mission. But as we wanted to show you other non-mainstream locations, we also stopped in Okiato (first capital of New Zealand), Orongo Bay (Mangroves walk), Taupiri Bay and the Gallery & Cafe Helena Bay Hill.

This is crazy. I was born and grew up in the tiny town Russell in this video, and specifically a house on the hill you see just behind the mangrove walk. I was there during the strict lockdown in NZ last year, and for a month we were only allowed to go as far from our houses as we could walk, so I spent a lot of time either walking that mangrove track - or watching your videos which I had just discovered. They made me long for the Netherlands also, where my mum's parents and also my dad comes from and where I had been studying. I was desperate to get out of NZ again and watched your videos as inspiration, and yet you were inspired by my lockdown place! I am now back in Leiden, The Netherlands to finish my studies and watching this because I am a bit homesick currently. It's a funny world
