  • I review the newest ND Mazda Miata! How does this newest MX-5 compare to its predecessors the NC, NB and NA? How does it compare to its competitors the Scion FRS and Subaru BRZ? Find out in my in depth review.

    I've read and watched every review that I can find on this wonderful car, and I have to say that yours is among, if not THE, best. Excellent job!!! LOVED the great camera angles and especially the SOUND! The only thing you said that I wonder about was your closing statement about how you can be perfectly happy with the base model rather than stepping up to the mid or top-end model. I agree that the infotainment and extra electronic safety nannies are extraneous, but the mid-level GS (or Sport here in the U.S.) gives you slightly firmer suspension and a limited-slip differential - which I think would be important to a true enthusiast - making it the one you really want. If you've driven both the GX and the GS (our Base and Sport), I'd be interested to hear your comparison.

      +John Poe Sorry I didn't catch your comment earlier! Thanks for the kind words! I totally agree with you on the need for an LSD. A rear drive car without an LSD feels limp wristed and kind of defeats the purpose of having rear drive, which is rotation on corner exit and being able to dial in the oversteer as you see fit. So I think the sport/GS is needed. So yes, I agree with you completely.

    I went from an AP1 S2K to a ND RF and I couldn't be happier. It has all the amenities and performance that I need. I miss the top end power from the F20c which the ND lacks, but the 155hp/148tq is more than just a paper stat. It's a quick, nimble car and any true car enthusiast will enjoy the experience.

    finally a good review of a car I really like! you should go more in depth into the car, dyno test it, corner weight scales, fuel tank size, stopping distance, fuel economy and so on. no one had really done this yet and not in a comprehensive way.

    You're speaking my language! I've been following this car's path to production for the last three years. Now that it's finally for sale, I've read and watched every review. This is my favorite video review so far. It tugs at my heartstrings because the reviewer is passionate about cars in exactly the same way I am. I swear he stole my script. Whenever people ask me why I love my 1999 Miata so much, I use those same talking points. Driving as a spiritual experience? Check. More about the feel than the numbers? Check. Mazda is the only mainstream manufacturer that truly gets it? Check again. Thank you for this review.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Trevor Pontifex Hey Trevor, I'm glad we're of one mind. Thank you so much for your feedback and hope you get an ND to add to your Miata collection soon. You'll love it.

  • @paulpak1
    @paulpak1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow you are good at this! Excellent review and I can see your passion as an enthusiast. You truly deserve more subs. I have no doubt that in time, you'll have plenty, because you produce some seriously good stuff. Please keep up the great work.
    BTW, I have to agree with the fact that we're at the end of the self-driving era. And the same joys you mentioned about the latest MX-5 is precisely why I bought a base 2016 Cayman. 6-speed manual shift, Sport Chrono, sports seats. Nothing else. It's got analog suspension and I love it. Your GT4 would obliterate it in every way. But the thrill my base Cayman gives me is the very same as the MX-5. It's the same harmonious tension you describe. My car isn't powerful, yet it's more fun than any other car I've ever driven. I simply cannot describe how much fun it is in mere words.
    So let's all get out there and enjoy interactive driving as long as we all can!!! And let's celebrate channels that actually have quality content! Enough with the supercar posing channels where revving the engine in front of tourists at Monaco gets subs... Find a country road and get out and drive! : )

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your detailed comment, Paul and congrats on your Cayman! I do agree that the base models are often overlooked. They can be supremely satisfying because they have the benefit of simplicity and purity and making the driver work to extract their performance! Your spec sounds brilliant. Love your attitude.

    Great review. You've hit the nail on the head. I've had Lotuses, Caterham 7s etc. Drove then on road and track and I loved this car as soon as I test drove it. Compared to this the Mustang v8 GT (UK spec) felt like a tractor, whereas everything felt just right about the ND and better in every way to the NC I sold to buy it.

    dude i love your reviews. you always get to the heart of the issue - what is it like to drive? maybe that comes from your sport bike experience. Anyway I test drove and bought a ND after seeing your review and have to provide some feedback.The car dies everything you say it does, but it is a toy. the wheelbase is so short that it porpoises over freeway expansion joints. The sub is in the passengers footwell so only kids or adults under 5'3" fit in that seat. And it is terrifying on the freeway at 89 mph. A great cheap drive the canyons by yourself car but a miserable daily driver. I ended up selling it after 800 miles. For $30k US as a second car career i would rather have a used 981 as that is a 10/10this car while this is really more of a toy. Keep up the great reviews!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you make some very valid comments. This car is best on twisty back roads, at around 60mph / 100km/h ish. The passenger footwell is problematic. But when it's in its zone, there is nothing else in the world like it.

    Just finished driving my ND on a date! Summer night in Southern California is at 68’F, perfect night to put the top down for a cruise. My date wasn’t keen with the top down. Her summer dress may be a bit too light for the night. Anyway, i had a fun time driving my Miata home with the top down. Noticed the steering is very direct and quick on a long sweeping turn. I do enjoy this Miata on occasion. After the drive, I wanted to see your thoughts on this Miata again.(like going back to read this good book again) Btw I sold my 2011 GT3RS and got myself a c63s. I was actually felt a relieve on the GT3RS were sold. It is more convenience for my need right now

    Man I had a hard time finding this ND review. Have been searching your review on and off for awhile to share with my car buddy.
    I have a car enthusiast buddy(a car fanatic) who told me he will go look at a ND today.
    Anyway, glad to found this review.
    Btw, I got a 2021 GT4 a couple of years ago. Now I sold one pizzeria and another in a few weeks ready to retired. I want to ask you what is your thoughts on a 992 GTS? GT3 mark up from Porsche dealership is insane! Also, I found the GT3 is a purposeful track car. May not be the right car to take a longer road trip.(Orange county to SF, or central coast). Anyway, give me your thoughts. Cheers

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mr. FLK! I'm glad you managed to find my ND review. If you had been subscribed this would've been so much easier, eh? I still feel the same about the ND as I do today. Still a great car.
      Nice job getting your '21 GT4! I think the 992 GTS is a good buy if you cannot get a GT3. It's nearly as good, just not as special. It's all about that engine. I think the 991 and 991.2 GT3s were great road trip cars (we did long road trips in ours driving down the coast and it was super comfortable).
      But the 992 GT3 is a different beast. It's back to being stiff again after years of getting more comfortable. I'm working on a 992 GT3 review now! So to your point, these days the 992 GTS might be the better long hauler.

    Wow- I felt like I was driving it! I totally understood what you were describing- thank you. But, living with others requires a more practical daily driver. No need for max grip or, huge power numbers, but, a 4 door minimum, 30ish MPG, manual tranny-have you driven a Ford Fiesta ST yet? If not, please, find a way to do it-I'd love to know what you think of it as a driver's car- that needs to be a commuter, grocery getter, errand runner, etc...

    Good review and commentary! Unfortunately, electronic steering has killed or soon kill the driving experience! I don't mind the Miata's low power, but I draw the line with electronic assist numb steering. $39k is too steep for me! My $23k Speed3 is not a convertible, but I'm not into bugs and wind noise. One time, a big sharp rock hit the top and bounced off, exactly where my head/face was...and I am so thankful I was not in a convertible! Plus, Miata can't carry a few golf bags either...To be honest, my Speed3 has too much power I rarely push or need to push it past 5k rpms.

      +ShakingTwoTrees2012 Yes! This is ceramic color. If you're trying to decide whether it's worth the extra 4400, I would just go for the minimal. This is supposed to be the quintessential sports car, isn't it?

      +driveopolis This past Monday, I took delivery of my 2016 Mazda GS MT in Meteor Grey Mica. I had the dealership PDI the car and nothing else, so I drove it home (the long way!) and have been removing all of the plastic wrapping in preparation for a touchless wash or two (with test drives in between) before hand washing and dedicating this weekend to preparing the paint for protection. Though I've only driven the car 50km or so, it's enough to confirm that I made the right choice for a weekend, fair-weather, fun pleasure vehicle. Of all the reviews and videos I've watched over the past four months, yours provides by far the most comprehensive, insightful and accurate assessment of the MX-5. Thanks for helping me to select the right vehicle for my requirements and congratulations on your awesome recent Porsche acquisition.

    Sam, love your use of "dynamic range" in your report. great use of a non-auto term that conveys what you are trying to describe.
    I've owned NA (both 1.6 and 1.8) and currently own a modified NB, and driven late NC. I believe the 2006-08 NC is universally regarded as the dog of the bunch, both dynamically and even in appearance. The 2009-15 NC was an upgrade in many ways to correct the deficiencies of the early NC. The original NA may have been what started it all, but prior to the ND, I regard the NB as the best true all-around Miata, with general usability with some maturity mixed in, but still retaining the feel and parts/dimensions/structure of the essential DNA going back to the 1990 NA.
    think of a future segment at my favourite west-coast track:

After all, that'd be a pretty fucked up deal.

  • @LogansRun314
    @LogansRun314 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I loved your review and it was deserving of my thumbs up! However, I absolutely disagree with your assessment of the NB. After owning both the NA and NB, they are both pretty much the same exact car with only a handful of slight differences/upgrades. After owning the NA for five years and selling it for an NC, I drove the NC for one month. The entire time, I couldn't wait to sell it and find another, true, Miata. The NB has been in my garage for a few years now, and I couldn't be happier:-)
    With that said, I can't wait to get my hands on the ND!

    • @vossler360
      @vossler360 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +IroquoisPliskin13 I had similar thoughts as I watched this review, as the NB chassis and mechanicals were closely derived from the NA, but I can understand that the presenter was most likely referring to a "spiritual successor" to the NA, which is a bit less tangible to clearly define. But one could definitely make the case that the NB was the "mechanical successor" to the NA, as many of the parts are interchangeable between them. Speaking from my experience as a NB owner and a local Miata club member, I can say that In truth any of the MX-5 generations (NA-ND) will give a satisfying driving experience, albeit with slight differences between models and spec.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +IroquoisPliskin13 I can totally appreciate a different point of view. :) I did own an NB before as well and I enjoyed it. Nothing wrong with liking the NB more than the ND!

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eric Shea Yes, Eric gets what I was saying. I see it as a spiritual successor in large part because in the ND I feel the 'slow motion effect' that I love so much about the NA. This was lost to me in the NB/NC. I know that mechanically this seems to be inconsistent, but I can only report what I feel and that's just my own experiences. Other's mileage may differ. :)

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean from 4-3?
      On the downshifts, definitely. On upshifts, I don't really think about it, I just let the revs fall by feel and they end up in the right place.
      On the downshifts, I give the throttle a quick blip at the same time I push in the clutch. Just start by practicing this going from 4th to 3rd.

    The NB miata was the same underneath as the NA. Only real difference was the skin. The NC, admittedly, was not as good as the previous or subsequent model(s).

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. But something went missing for me in the NA to NB transition. Just a little bit of that subtle chassis movement and rotation on and off the throttle when I went into and out of corners. It stayed gone for the NC. And it came back with the ND. This is just my own opinion, others may experience it differently. :)

      In his more recent GT350 review he doesn't even consider the ND to be one of the best cars he's driven recently, listing only the M2 and the GT4, so I guess we know what he really thinks when he's not trying to put the car in the best possible light (gotta keep those fleet cars coming, don't you know).

    I think you're a bit pessimistic about the future of sports cars.. If anything this car (and others like the frs, m135, or maybe the srf more recently) shows companies notice there is a market for a more pure driving car. Which will be offset by other cars in their lineup that are self driving and for the general public. Really enjoyed the review, this wasn't meant as a criticism at all, just a point of discussion.

    • @driveopolis
      @driveopolis  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Richard Basford Thanks for the comment, Richard! I guess it's a matter of timeline. I think a fully automated, human driving outlawed future will happen in the developed world in the foreseeable future, maybe even in our lifetimes. The real question is what manufacturers are going to do in this transition period and whether there are enough enthusiast types around in these companies to give us more of the FRS/BRZ/Miata purist experiences before it's all over. Check out the new autopilot feature on Teslas. The technology is here and it is very impressive. We are already obsolete!

    • @Ghostca
      @Ghostca 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree! Perhaps I'm just being optimistic that now matter how 'green' (whatever that means in the future) or automated driving becomes, there will be a market for a fosil fuel burning, analogue, sports car. To say the Miata has all the comforts and conveniences of a real car is a bit of a stretch, doesn't even have a glove box or real cup holders. Better than a Lotus, but you're still giving up a bunch of usability

    • @EForchetto
      @EForchetto 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's got 4 interior storage compartments altogether: A tiny one in centre console, a centre lockable glove box between the seats and a further two similar-sized boxes behind the seat backs. Lots of folk don't know about them. The trunk is reasonably large and very deep considering how tiny this car is. The cupholders are a bit intrusive, but they're also detachable if you don't need them.
