    RME Hdspaio Pci Express allows the low latency monitoring feature, just to let you know it guys. Is an old card but it works flawlessly today. Better then the most cards or interfaces under 1000€. Thanks for the video Markus, just what i was looking for for a newbie with studio one!

    This video was so important to my understanding. I'm glad you didn't rush it. I actually plan on watching it through a second time to make sure the concepts stick. It wasn't "long-winded" at all!
    Love your work. Much appreciated.

    I have the studio 192 and I'm still learning about it and about Studio ONE. I couldn't get any of those "Z"s to show up until I messed around with the "Dropout Protection" options in the Processing tab. I think it must have reset something. From then on, it was always available no matter what I selected.
    But before changing "Dropout Protection" reset the link to my interface, BOTH checkbox items
    "Enable low latency monitoring for instruments" and
    "Use native low latency monitoring instead of hardware monitoring"
    were greyed out and there we no "Z"s next to "Audio Roundtrip" or "Instrument".

    Latency figures for converters alone typically fall in the .7 - 1.4 mS range. That’s for each conversion, A/D and D/A, so a round trip of roughly 1-2 mS. These figures are common at 48kHz and drop almost by half at 96kHz. In my experience, latency doesn’t become musically objectionable until more than about 5mS. Less is better of course, but I have used Pro Tools HD with an overall system delay of 5mS with no complaints even from drummers monitoring live through the DAW.
    When I began working like this, my rationale was that the sound of a drummer’s instrument takes 2-3mS to reach their ear acoustically, so conventional analog monitoring is actually faster than reality. A delay that is close to the actual physical latency of sound is quite acceptable for even the most acute musician’s ear and mind. This has proven to be true.

    Just came across this, thank you very much for the explanation! Took me long to set everything up with my legacy 192, but it works almost perfect.
    One thing I am missing in SO6 is to have Delay and Reverb hearable, when blue Z is active. Do you know if this still works in the current versions?

    Hi Marcus, great video and very clear. It was not long to me as it contained so much good info! Since Studio 192 is supported, what about the 2 new models that have DSP on-board, 1810 & 1824? Do you know if they will work the same as 192? Thanks again for your videos!

    Can you explain the difference between the "direct monitoring" function activated by pressing the hardware button at the Studio 68 and Blue Z? Direct Monitoring does the same signal routing shortcut as the "blue z" monitoring, but how does Studio One know how to set the correct latency? When direct monitoring is enabled (Hardware "Mon" switch activated) - I hear the monitored signal from the input almoust in real time, but the playback audio from the daw (drums, metronome etc.), that I am using to sync the timing of the instrument on the input "throug my ears" has an output latency > 0ms. As Studio one "knows" the difference of the input latency and the output latency and tries to compensate the timing of the new recorded instrument accordingly with software monitoring. No one could explain this to me so far. (Update: I think the record offset value in Options could be used to compensate this?)

    Thanks Marcus for the explanation. I just bought the 192 mobile but the behavior of these z's and check boxes has change. As I go for a lower block size, say

    • @marcushuyskensmusic
      @marcushuyskensmusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - I see that change as well (the settings becoming greyed out) but you could also just bump it up - then manually de-select the "use NLLM instead of Hardware Direct Monitoring" option.
      The signal may process on playback BUT it would'nt be processed while you are recording..

    Great video and good job explaining how it works. Unfortunately, on my system I get better performance when I set Dropout Protection to minimum, but that pretty much disables Native Low Latency monitoring (green) - I only have the option for Harware monitoring (blue). When I set it to Low or higher then I get the Native option (green) - but my CPU usage doubles. Why is that? isn't the CPU usage supposed to drop? I use an RME Fireface 802 so I've always gotten pretty low latency as it is. I'm wondering if this feature works better on interfaces that don't have good latency. It is a little puzzling.

    What would it cost to upgrade from studio one 3 professional to studio one 4 professional?

    • @JammyGit
      @JammyGit 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Griffin - Normally it costs about £130 for the upgrade. However, every so often Presonus send offers in their newsletters and sometimes there will be a decent discount of up to 1/3rd off their software. I had one of these deals last month for their St Patrick's Day Sale and upgraded my version 3 professional to version 4 professional and it cost me about £85 altogether.
      It's worth looking out for the Presonus newsletters, they seem to offer a discount every few months, I think they'll do it again sometime during summer and black Friday for sure.
      I started off with a free version of Studio One 3 Artist and learnt how to use it for a few months. Then I upgraded to version 3 professional when they emailed me the 30% discount, then I used that for a year or so then I decided to take their 1/3rd off discount and upgrade to version 4. It's way better than paying full price for it, I must have saved about £300+ by waiting for Presonus's sales. If you don't get their newsletters just sign up for it on the website. It's not just Studio One that you get offers for, you can also get good deals on Notation, and other add ons, plugins etc and save a fair amount of money. 👍

    Lol all this hype over something that is 15 years old Asio Direct Monitoring. It was built into most FireWire Interfaces so you did not need and external software mixer to route ins and outs without going into the Daw. Basically you add DSP now and sell ADM as a new feature. This was the biggest selling point of the ASIO 2.0 spec and was required to be part of the driver and hardware in order to work. Sadly this feature was removed from Daw’s only Steinberg still has it.
